Old school kung fu movies have plenty of slapstick anyway.

Watched two John Huston masterpieces back-to-back: The Misfits (1961) and The Night of the Iguana (1964).

I've seen all the movies mentioned here, including most of Jackie Chan and Jet Li's filmographies, including Fung Sai Yuk, armor of God, wheels on meals, etc.

The most entertaining fights for me are probably from The Legend of the Drunken Master, not the first drunken master movie, but the Jackie Chan produced film from the 90s. Jackie's drunken boxing in that movie is a blast.

Otherwise, I'll admit I find many of the movies kinda boring outside the fights. I remember the fights from Once Upon a Time In China 2 as being great (featuring Jet Li as Wung Fei Hung and also Donnie Yen).

Honestly, more modern forays into the genre are often as great as the old ones. Ong Bak was mentioned, which is great when he's not fighting westerners. Fearless was decent. The Raid is lots of fun and I also liked the Ip Man movies, though they sorta blend together for me.

Yeah you gotta learn to love dumb stories but the Shaw Bros movies are charmingly dumb.

Oh and if you're gonna start watching Hong Kong martial arts movies you might as well add some gun fu to the list. Not actually martial arts movies but they're Hong Kong cinema at its finest. Anthying from director John Woo before he came to America is action nirvana and anything starring Chow Yun Fat before he also came to America is also great since his charisma is off charts and both worked together for their best ****. Hard Boiled and The Killer are god tier action movies that directly inspired The Matrix, John Wick, and Kill Bill.

Story and acting in Mortal Kombat were kind of **** and the liberties they took were **** but the fight scenes were ****ing epic and exactly what you want from the movie. Nothing even nearly as bad as Annihilation so the **** parts are tolerable. It's not as good the OG but the fight scenes are definitely much much better.

They also paid homage to the fatalities. I guess that's why they put Nitara and Reiko in it because nobody really gives a **** about either of those characters let alone their fatalities so they were just flesh dummies. And the gore is spot on.

They also paid a lot of fanfare to the lore of the series despite the silly liberties they took.

Lately I watched a few movies that have been on my to-do list for a while and that I should've gotten to years ago.

In the Name of the Father (1993) - awesome prison drama based on real events. I won't give away the whole story, but it takes place in Ireland and England and has to do with IRA bombings / terrorism and some consequences from that. The lead is played by Daniel Day Lewis and while the love people have for him has been a little mysterious to me in the past, I get it now. He's great in this. Easy recommendation!

The Color Purple (1985) - Another great drama movie taking place in the earlier half of the previous century about a demure black girl/woman married off to a slob on a farm. It's a Stephen Spielberg movie which features some great performances by actors like Whoopi Goldberg (in the lead), Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover. I heard about this like forever, but it took me this long to watch it and it's a great film. I'm a little surprised it's not more known. Another easy recommendation!

Clue (1985) - On paper, this looks better than it is. It's a John Landis produced crime-comedy roughly based on the Cluedo board game with Tim Curry in its most prominent role. It's got a thunderstorm with a creepy mansion and at least one broken down car and the need to use a phone. It's got a party with several mysterious character using pseudonyms and a murder mystery. It's kinda campy. However, I do feel it would've worked better had it either taken itself more seriously and dropped some of the meta humour in particular OR if it had aimed for more straight up comedy. As it is, it falls somewhere in between. Unfortunately, it's comedic enough for you to not care much what happens to the characters, but not funny enough to make up for that. Still, it's the kind of movie that I would expect a small minority to love so I assume it may have some cult status.

It was nominated for a whole bunch and won none of them.

All Spielberg movies are well known, of course, but where I grew up, The Color Purple seems to have fallen in the shadow of his other films.. even those that are arguably weaker, like Hook (which I still enjoy).

I know of it, but haven't seen it. On your recommendation, I'll try to remedy that :)
