![]() That reminds me, I've got to see if a combo DVD/VHS player I have still works. Anyway, about a week ago, Mrs, Drjohnrock and I saw That Hagen Girl from 1947 on DVD. It was a Christmas gift from me to her. It stars Shirley Temple (as a teenager, no singing or dancing) and Ronald Reagan (!) in the lead roles. I got it because (1) the Mrs. used to like Shirley Temple's early films, and (2) I thought it might be good for a few laughs, since it was included in Michael and Harry Medved's book The Fifty Worst Films Of All Time. It isn't a great flick by any means but I wouldn't put it on a 50 worst list. Politics aside, I never thought much of Reagan's acting, but he does OK in this movie, even if he looks at times like he'd rather be facing a firing squad (he reportedly didn't like the film). Shirley does a good job in a mostly thankless role. There is a good performance by Lois Maxwell (later Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films) in one of her first movie roles. |

I have several that I've watched over the past 3 or 4 weeks, that I can list in this thread, so I'll start with this one...
![]() Fiend of Dope Island (1961) B-movie action/adventure flick about a maniacal crime boss who smuggles guns and marijuana from a small Caribbean island and rules over his underlings and the locals with a sadistic iron fist. A few entertaining moments here and there but rather disappointing overall. A title like 'Fiend of Dope Island' could've been wildly entertaining in the right hands but, unfortunately, it was not to be. |

![]() ![]() Brute Force (1947) B&W action flick about a group of inmates serving time in prison for various offenses. The prison is a powder keg of pent-up frustration and anger which is only exacerbated by the actions of the manipulative and sadistic head of the prison guards. Much of the action seems like it came from a pulp fiction novel or a crime comic but even though it's a bit unbelievable, it's still an entertaining movie. |

![]() ![]() Vice Squad (1953) B&W crime film about the hunt for a cop killer which leads to information about an upcoming bank heist and the gang behind it. Various moments of comic relief are sprinkled throughout the film despite the underlying theme of violence. |
