Short of Brokeback mountain I can't really think of any gay themed movie that made a noticeable impact on the box office. Did it make any money in France?

Well edgy in the sense that you just don't get to see any mainstream (meaning, not directed at a niché market, with good actors and a solid script) movies dealing with characters who are bi(or/pan)sexual. It's just refreshing. How many films with bisexuals as main characters have you seen?

French Folk Rock was certainly the root of all the songs in the film, but this "American Pop" arrangement ruined it. That's without talking about the lyrics... Well mainstream French films are all like that. Sexuality was never a big issue there... and that film shouldn't have been in the official Canne selection.

Speaking of french films featuring bisexuals made by directors who have a tendency to cast Catherine Deneuve, I just remembered Les timoines. That was a solid movie, although not as good as Ma saison préférée which features Catherine Deneuve but not as a bisexual or Les roseaux sauvages which doesn't feature Catherine Deneuve but does feature a bisexual (or bicurious) character.

I just noticed (with the help of IMDB of course) that all these movies are juggling with these 3 actresses:
_Catherine Deneuve
_Emmanuelle Béart
_Elodie Bouchez

It seems they act in the same kind of films. I need to check a lot of their works.

Absolutely loved it. First class animation, laugh-out-loud funny, thought-provoking, melancholic and heartwarming all at once - one of my new favourites of last year.
