I didn't think it was "gory". There was maybe 2 little scenes, but I wouldn't consider the film gory. I have to say though there was definitely some Saw moments lol.

I'm always really, REALLY wary of Von Trier films but I'm really kind of curious about that one.

Anyway:

I've had this for a while but not watched it because it's kind of rare that I'm in the mood a glacially paced, 2 hr 40 min western. But I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. The major criticism I've heard of it is that it feels muddy because it's sort of unclear why Bob shot Jessie, but I like that about it--the two men had a complex and contradictory relationship and both Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck did really well characterising that. The music was great, there are a bunch of great bit parts/cameos (Mary Louise Parker, Zooey Deschanel, Nick Cave, Sam Shepard). It is really slow, especially through the middle, but it's always gorgeous to watch--the cinematography is like watching paintings move.

All in all, well done.

Man, Paul Thomas Anderson really can direct. And the writing ain't half bad too, good film. All the ingredients a rom-com has but with a quirky, bizarre edge. If PTA releases a couple more solid films, I may have to consider him as a favourite director. He's yet to have a flop.

ooh! i love PTA and haven't seen this.

I think you're right...they all can seem a bit long actually. And I also liked Holy Grail more than Life of Brian, but really they all have some classic lines that just stick in your brain.

Life of Brian is 93 minutes, Holy Grail is 89. They do feel a bit longer than they are but not that long. At least not for me--you do have to have a lot of patience for the ridiculous.
