All time favourite movie?

GREGORY'S GIRL (1981)
http://www.filmreference.com/images/sjff_01_img0209.jpg

Considering my taste in movies, this may seem an odd choice but I can still can't seem to lose my love for it.

I should imagine many younger posters here have never even heard of the film. It was a low budget Scottish movie that boasted no major stars (although Clare Grogan enjoyed a modicum of success in 80's pop band Altered Images), was set on a council estate and technically uninspiring. What it has got is a fantastic, heartfelt and honest script.

Gregory is a gawky 14 year old lad who has a fixation for a girl who tries out for the school football team, of which he is the goalkeeper. His journey into trying to capture her heart leads him on a very different path to the original he had envisaged. There are many themes in the film that only become apparent on rewatching many times. The women in Gregory's life are far more emotionally smarter than him. This includes his younger sister and the schoolgirls who conspire to match Gregory with the girl he SHOULD be with. The film has a surreal, even zany sense of humour bubbling under the surface. The appearance of a young student dressed as a penguin wandering the school corridors aimlessly is repeated. Gregory's older brother who is a fantastic cook, and who bribes the school head is another strange figure. He is played absolutely straight, but the idea of a working class Scottish teenager being adept at cookery and fancy cakes is slightly surreal.

The film is one of the sweetest evocations of being a typically awkward teenager struggling for identity. It is played so natural and honestlyand resonated with me To this day it remains my favourite ever movie. I have seen many better acted films, better directed films but barely none as honestly and innocently made.

So c'mon what ya got?

That surprises me. It's a good movie, but I want to watch it again to grasp its full depth (last time I watched it, I'd been awake for 30 hours or something ridiculous like that). Anyway, my favourite movie would have to be one of these two:

I've probably watched it upwards of 15 times
and I still notice new things each time I watch it.

Haha, I feel stupid for missing that.

I should have known better though - you've seen every movie ever created! :p:

jackhammer 02-09-2008 06:24 PM

No not quite, very nearly though lol. have you ever seen Manhunter? As you like Silence you may know a little background?

Since I was like 8 and first saw this movie on laserdisc I have been in love with it. I've seen it a good 20 times and still adore everything about it. Don't bother seeing the second one though, it sucked majorly.

It's got Michael Caine , Noel Coward , Benny Hill , Lots of cars & a football match
What more could you want.

And Lee's choice would be second on my list.

The Princess Bride. Yes I'm a 9 year old girl. What can I say?

Kevorkian Logic 02-09-2008 06:49 PM

:). I still love that movie too.

jackhammer 02-09-2008 06:51 PM

Swim-I absolutely detest A Princess Bride. Don't take it personally. I Just dont get it at all.

Urban-you like Gregory's Girl? You have impeccable taste!

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-09-2008 06:52 PM

I used to have a big crush on Claire Grogan. :o:

jackhammer 02-09-2008 06:56 PM

I love the fact that his love life is sorted and he just sits back and enjoys it! I think most kids of a similar age fell for Clare Grogan. I did!

Sarah-I presume you can see the underlying theme of Starship Troopers? I think it's a great film too, but then I love that duality the film has.

I did manage to catch on to the theme, but not until I was older mind you. Little Sarah in all her 9 year old glory only liked the movie for the violence, I loved that scene where the brain bug sucks out that dude's brains.

jackhammer 02-09-2008 07:25 PM

It's a complete piss take of American Military. From the big brash adverts to the casting of Casper Van Dien. The director (Paul Verohoven) kept telling Casper that it was a Pro American film. A delicious twist if I have ever heard.

cardboard adolescent 02-09-2008 07:32 PM

It's a complete parody of all Heinlein's ideas. I love it.

SATCHMO 02-10-2008 12:07 AM

Do I have to be the first to say Pulp Fiction. I know its almost cliche, but I do love the hell out of it.

tkpb938 02-10-2008 01:52 AM

Errr... you'll make fun of me, but mines probably Juno. You don't often see movies like this released these days, and I absolutely loved the acting/characters in it.

Wow, that is a really hard question. Can't pick just one, so here are my all time favorites.

-Dazed and Confused
-Fast Times at Ridgemont High(Spicoli rocks! haha)
-S.L.C. Punk
-Donnie Darko
-Dumb & Dumber
-Superbad!

Theres others I really like, but I guess that narrows it down.

iLoveBlood 02-13-2008 05:23 PM

Peter Jackson's "The Dead Alive" or "Braindead" as it's known in Australia and Europe.

Greatest film of all time. Compulsively watchable. I've seen this movie upwards of a hundred times and still every joke hits and every piece of violence is so over the top it enters a realm that few films are brave enough to go to. Also see "The Story of Ricky."

cardboard adolescent 02-18-2008 12:10 AM

^^ watched that based on your recommendation and ended up loving it. must watch more of his early movies...

I'm keen to as well. LOTR was superb... an amazing effort on Jackson's part. I've always wanted to check out his other movies.

cardboard adolescent 02-18-2008 08:40 AM

I saw the Frighteners when I was very young and only just realized it was a Peter Jackson movie... i've always had a soft spot for it.

tkpb938 02-18-2008 10:00 AM

This is a little off topic, but never ever watch Delta Farce... It will leave you braindead

djchameleon 02-18-2008 12:51 PM

sweet_nothing 02-23-2008 03:27 PM

His first film was the utterly brilliant Bad Taste in which he also starred. It took a long time to make and was shot at weekends due to work commitments. As a piece of low budget film making AND as a spoof it works very well. The first time I watched BAD TASTE I could not believe how good it was. Braindead (AKA DeadAlive) was next and features the best lawnmower/death scene ever! He directed Heavenly Creatures and gave Kate Winslet her first taste of stardom. I have so much respect for a guy who made a film that relied on a scene regarding Alien barf to showcase his talents. LOTR is a momentual achievement regarding his past.

adidasss 02-23-2008 05:32 PM

And then he goes and makes King Kong...:,(

jackhammer 02-23-2008 05:34 PM

A childhood dream gone wrong I agree. His journey in movies is still a great one.
