I've been playing Mass Effect 1 and 2 basically constantly for the past few months. Probably my favorite games of all time.

Just finished Arkham Asylum.
Really awesome game.
Considering playing Dead Space 2 a second time through.
Still undecided whether I like the original better or not.

I think they improved the second in Every way possible.
It's my favorite game of the year so far.

As well as my usual dosage of Morrowind, I've been playing a lot of Left 4 Dead 2 lately. I wanted to ask, is anybody here on Steam? I'm thinking about making a Steam thread, but I don't want to if nobody's on it.

Agreed, but it definitely wasn't as scary. The best part about the first one (or any good survival horror for that matter) was the desperation and helplessness, and the strategy when it comes to conserving ammo. The second still had tons of moments like that but it's kinda hard to be scared with a huge ass javelin gun

I have Steam, my account name is bigleaguechewer. My brothers are usually on my account, though, playing Call Of Duty: Black Ops. I too have Left 4 Dead 2 (as well as the first.)

A sad thing about making a horror themed game is that there are always people who will rip on it if they don't **** their pants when they play the game. I personally don't think that scaring the **** out of people was ever the goal of the designers .. They wanted to create a game which is exciting and scary enough to be engaging and I thought they succeeded in doing so. You're quite right that it's hard to be scared when you are so very capable of defending yourself.

Luckily, Dead Space 2 does not rely on the player to be scared for them to enjoy it any more than f.ex Half-Life 2 did and so I think people should stop using it as an argument against the quality of the game. Generally speaking, it is scary enough even if that doesn't mean we all quiver and quake. To not sufficiently scare it's players would be much worse for a game like Amnesia: The Dark Descent which overall has less else to offer.

amnesia scared the **** out of me, i loved that game.

Dead Space has way more bells and whistles, but the core game play wasn;t more satisfying to me then amnesia.

Guybrush 08-25-2011 03:08 AM

I feel the other way round. I loved Dead Space 2, but haven't yet finished Amnesia. It was scary, but not as much as I perhaps expected considering it's hype. I also disagree that Amnesia's core game play is more satisfying - at least it hasn't been to me. When I stopped playing, I was in rooms flooded with water, trying to jump between bits of flotsam. I didn't find it to be original, nor particularly entertaining.

I liked what happened before though, but I felt like it's 90% atmosphere and not much else. I'll pick it up again though and finish it one day soon and maybe my opinion will change.

edit :

I think there's some psychology behind people praising games like Amnesia which stems from a knee-jerk reaction to support indie developers, particularly when they do something different from everyone else. Amnesia deserves a lot of praise, definetly, but I think the hype may well make out the game to be better than it really is. I wonder if people would have liked it so much had it been developed by Ubisoft f.ex.

the only game I found scary was the original Silent Hill
