The Mass Effect series is a fantastic experience, but as games I think them quite average. The characters, the story, the cutscenes, the lore, the universe - all that stuff was stunning and set new benchmarks, but the actual gameplay was rather mediocre in my opinion and barely evolved.

The first one certainly had primitive gameplay, but 2 and 3 just got better and better. Unless it was one of those devil parts that doesn't seem to have any real way to win except through luck I never found myself bored while playing a Mass Effect game.

Played through Journey on the PS3 tonight for maybe the 30th time and, man, it never gets dull. Such an elegant, evocative and magical experience, and arguably one of the most beautiful videogames ever made. It's like being in the shoes of a fairy:

30 times? I absolutely loved it (despite it clocking in at under 2 hours, it was still my game of the year for 2012) and it's everything you said in your post, but I think it's a game that pretty much loses all of its effect after one playthrough.

The first playthrough is by far the best, no doubt. But if you collect all the glyphs you become a so-called 'white robe' with a longer and self recharging scarf (meaning you can fly much, much more) and also opens the door to all sorts of advanced flying techniques, including drop, dive and boost flying. There's more to it than meets the eye.

Totally, I can't believe how a paperwork simulator could have me on the edge of my seat. Easily one of my favorite games from this year.

Dear Guy Who Invented the "Protection Mission",

I suggest you find a nice cabin in the woods and fall off the grid, because if I ever find you, you're dead. Like dead dead. Cut off your head, eat the skin off your face, bury you in my backyard, and let the worms have you kinda dead. Those missions aren't fun. You know those kind of missions right? The ones where you have to keep some ******* who couldn't defend himself from a disabled midget alive while he completes some random task. Seriously, has anyone in the history of time ever actually enjoyed one of those missions? They're dull, annoying, and if there's any challenge they become downright frustrating. I don't care about so-and-so or random-douchebag-with-a-death-wish. In fact after the fifth time I've been forced to restart and I'm screaming at the screen while trying not to physically harm my controller I'd like nothing more than to step aside and let the enemies by to perform whatever vile, unspeakable acts they would like upon him. I honestly have no idea why these missions still exist. I guess they've just become ingrained into the collective gaming subconscious. I say we take a knife and cut them out like the cancer that they are. And then we turn it on you, you piece of ****!

Love,

Your Death
