Sopranos was so great except all those dream sequences when Tony was in a coma.

So far I really like I’m Dying Up Here

Of all those types of mega dramas Six Feet Under might be my best favorite

No. Shows like H:LOTS and Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue were gritty as hell, and they maintained all of the key characters, but they added new main plots with each episode. Yes, Sippowitz was an alcoholic during an entire season, but that was just a side bar to the new **** they'd bring in every week - that had nothing to do with the previous week in most cases.

Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos, etc. kept pretty much a singular take going on for multiple seasons. They'd add new little arcs but the story line stayed solid to the origins of the show.

Unlike previous episodic dramas, these shows basically took an extended length movie with a solid fictional story premise, and then chopped it up into sections - leaving you with bated breath waiting for the next episode to take up where the last one left off.

These are great choices. I have been trying to catch up on Criminal Minds for a long time, currently in season 3.

Anyone watch The Handmaid’s Tale?

I loved the first season (and the book), and I was excited for the 2nd season even though they were going to have to deviate from the source material at this point. I had faith in the writing/directing/Elisabeth Moss’s sublime acting.

...but unfortunately this season has been a flaming failure in my opinion. It’s abundantly clear that Hulu ordered way too many episodes (****ing 13!!!!) and that the writers needed to really stretch things out to make that many. The story of this season could have easily been told in 8 episodes. The penultimate episode features practically zero new story developments. Moss is still consistently great but dear God it moves at a snail’s pace and has been a horrendous disappointment. Probably the most jarring falloff in quality from a first to second season that I’ve ever seen

When you start off by shamelessly ripping off Watchmen your second season probably isn't going to light the world on fire. Still a damn good first season though.

I watched a bit of the first episode a couple days ago but then felt an urgent need to rewatch Jaws. Seemed alright tbf.

Watching Jaws is always a good option, as is Blade Runner and/or Alien. But yeah, stick with Stan: I really think you'll get into it. The sly pokes at horror tropes, the basic way he blunders through every encounter with the supernatural, his "aw ****!" when he comes up against an enemy ... just great. Really refreshing show. Also: lots and lots of gore. What more could you want?
