40 Year Old Virgin... Yeah I did not find that funny at all, in fact I was bored out of my skull. However I loved Knocked Up and Freaks and Geeks so I wont hold it against him.

The reason why people love The Dark Knight, beyond it's non-stop action and Ledger's performance, is the way that the writers were able to make multiple A list Batman characters relevant, dense, and giving them performances that kept you interested in them. If you're not even slightly invested in Harvey Dent/Two Face or The Joker before watching the film, it'll just feel like another action thriller, mostly because you wouldn't understand how these characters shape Batman in the many comics they are part of, and how the director was able to have that same impact in a two hour movie.

For example, I couldn't give a damn about Iron Man as a character before I watched the film, and so the movie was just mediocre to me. Funny, but derivative. To many who watched the film for Ledger, The Dark Knight was fun, but it meant nothing to them.

Altough I do know at least 2 friends of mine who knew nothing of Batman before entering the theatre. i guess it was the excitment of opening night on a HUGE IMAX screen with the amazing sound and the cheers of the crowd everytime Ledger had delivered another monologue.

Another thing is that fans of the first film who didn't know about Batman before probably learned a little before seeing the Dark Knight. So Mr. Nolan really struck gold.

meh, i agree the Dark Knight was overrated, I think you are allowed to without being deemed to be swimming against the tide for the sake of it.
Too long, too much squeezed into one movie, Christian Bale (compared to the last one) sucked, not enough Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhall sucked, plus no matter how much I adjust the brightness on my crappy old tube set it doesn't get any easier to see what the hell's going on (although I agree the cinematography is fantastic). Saw it in the cinema too and was underwhelmed/overwhelmed.
As you say Sonace not a bad film by anyone's standards but I don't think i'm alone in believing the hysteria surrounding it's inspired ground-breaking genius to be a bit much

Can't we just have a nice happy film about puppies?
