Stewart vs Colbert vs Maher

I'm a fan of all 3. But I have to give it to Colbert.

boo boo 04-18-2009 04:15 PM

You're a right leaning libertarian right?

Why do you hate Maher though? I mean I know there's a lot of perfectly valid reasons, but his viewpoints at least from what I've seen are not all too different from the guy in your avatar.

So there must be some other reason you hate him.

sweet_nothing 04-18-2009 04:32 PM

I like Jon Stewart the best, Colbert is funny too but I perfer the Daily show. Bill Maher has this scumbag quailty to him.

khfreek 04-18-2009 04:34 PM

It was tough between Stewart and Colbert, but I decided Jon's grating laugh and lapses in hilarity were worse than Stephen's tendency to ruin interviews.

boo boo 04-18-2009 04:38 PM

The awkward interviews are the best part of Colbert.

I don't agree with Maher on everything and he can surely be very close minded on some issues, but overall I think he's funny, which is his job, so he's good at what he does.

His stand up IMO is underrated.

They're hit and miss with me. The written material is always comedy gold though.

boo boo 04-18-2009 04:57 PM

It is kinda funny how so many liberals now despise Christopher Hitchens, who is often looked at as a radical lefty but just happens to support the war in Iraq.

Where's the logic in hating somone just because of their one opinion on one subject?

As for your clip. I think Maher and Hitchens are both right and both wrong. I don't agree with Hitchens on the war but he does kinda have a point that the "Bush is stupid" thing is something that's been adopted by stupid people to joke about and feel better about themselves because "they're smarter than the president".

That doesn't mean Bush isn't a total dumbass of course. But it is a very good point.

The part where he insults the audience is really funny.

Bane of your existence 04-18-2009 07:29 PM

Jon Stewart is my man. Honestly, voice of my generation. And people can hate on him for that, doesn't change a thing.

FaSho 04-18-2009 08:07 PM

Colbert's the funniest even though The Daily Showis better IMO. I Am America(And So Can You) is hilarious though.

Bane of your existence 04-18-2009 08:33 PM

The book was funny, and Colbert is funny. But it's schtik. It's a routine that gets older and older. Stewart has been fresh and hilarious for years.

boo boo 04-18-2009 09:06 PM

Even if he's playing a character, he's still the funniest IMO.

Stewart is hilarious, but I actually think The Daily Show has more misses than The Colbert Report, sometimes they have a special corespondent and it's a complete misfire.

Plus Stewarts silly expressions and mannerisms come off as a bit too forced at times. They're both still comic geniuses but personally I give Colbert the edge.

crash_override 04-21-2009 04:07 PM

Colbert without a doubt, his speach at the republican national convention is one of the best pieces of youtube history.

WWWP 04-21-2009 04:42 PM

I'm a fan of all but my ranking is as follows:
Maher
Stewart
Colbert.

Yeah. It's especially funny because no one was laughing, and Bush looked so pissed.

And of course all the pundits got mad at him, talked about how distasteful he was while praising the little comedy skit Bush did where he basically mocked the mistakes he made that caused the senseless deaths of thousands of people. Now everybody laughed at that.

333 04-22-2009 11:42 PM

So, they're all funny and have legit views, but I can't say I agree with all of it. I gotta admit I wasn't a big fan of Maher until Religulous came out. The man has some points to make. I think out of the three, I gotta respect Stewart more just because Colbert gets under my skin sometimes.

well nothing yet, but i could see making a song about him in the future, even though there is one already

OccultHawk 01-19-2011 04:30 AM

Stewart is the funniest but Maher hates religion and religious idiots the most so my vote goes to Maher for saying what really needs to be said, 'Christianity is stupid!'

djchameleon 01-19-2011 05:00 AM

Stephen Colbert gets my vote because stand alone he is the funniest to me. Stewart needs assistance from his correspondents for laughs imo. I enjoy The Daily Show but it's hit or miss sometimes The Colbert Report always delivers.

So if I had to rank, it would be
Colbert
Stewart's correspondents
Maher
Stewart himself

TockTockTock 01-19-2011 05:08 AM

Jon Stewart. He is both funny and intelligent, and if you watch any of his debates with other people then you'll see my point. Colbert is funny as well (and smart if you look at the points he's making), but his routine gets a bit old sometimes. As for Bill Maher... I just don't like him. He's rude and disrespectful to others and has a sense of egotism about him.

I agree with you, he has some good debates with the people that he interviews from time to time. He is quite intelligent but I prefer Colbert's character and he's just always on point to me, hits all the time.

RVCA 01-19-2011 01:27 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert don't actually have much to say. They sit behind their desk and regurgitate what their writing staff gives them. Maher, on the other hand, seems a lot more genuine. He actually does standup, and he makes movies about his views. (Religulous = Win) Stewart did have the fantastic Rally to Restore Sanity, however. That all being said, my ranking would go like this:

Maher
Stewart
Colbert

Dirty 01-19-2011 01:38 PM

Maher
Colbert
Stewart

I've never been a fan of Stewart. His show doesn't do it for me. I just don't really think he's all that funny. Colbert has balls and is probably the best character actor ever. His speech at the white house correspondents thing a few years back was just awesome. He's a funny dude but he's a little too much for me sometimes.

I'm not a huge Maher fan or anytihng, but I used to watch him on HBO and liked his stuff. He definitely has an egotism thing about him and kinda seems douchey, but he's more on the raunchy side of comedy and I think he's a really smart dude. Always enjoyed watching his show.

You're right, they do have writers, but Stewart writes too. If you saw his Rally not too long ago, you'd see how truly funny he is on his own (and yes, he wrote all of his material for it).

EDIT: By the way, I think some of you would like this. This is one of the few times I've ever seen Colbert be serious:

I agree with you completely about Stewart and Colbert.

I gotta give it to Stewart though, he is funny, insightful, and intelligent. Colbert's schtick can get old after awhile and the fact that he has to be in character creates limitations. He's off and on for me. Generally, I find myself watching Colbert Report as a carry over of Daily Show until the first commercial and if it hasn't grabbed my attention by that point, I don't watch anymore. I always watch the Daily Show though. :pimp:

Plus, Daily Show gave birth to Colbert Report :D

As for Maher, it's not that I'm put off by his rudeness or ego (I appreciate those qualities in other comedians), I just don't find him that funny. Dunno.

A comedian bashing religion, Maher is truly the cutting edge of comedy today.

Funny or not. It needs to be said, again amd again, by everyone. I just appreciate that he doesn't back off it.

Ska Lagos Jew Sun Ra 01-20-2011 01:23 PM

Eh, Maher is the closest thing we'll have to another Carlin at the moment, and Religulous was amazing(and besides, it was obviously a response to Ben Steins "All Atheists are Jew Killing Nazis, and I know because I'm Jewish." documentary).

Look at that laundry list of "authors" in the right column. You gotta wonder how much of it he actually wrote...

Fair point.

Have you ever heard him talk outside of his show though? The dude is a really smart man...

Who cares? The point is he writes some of the material and has a delivery that most stand up comedians would die for.

Yeah, I'll correct you. You're discrediting Colbert and Stewart because of the format of their shows. Just because they don't have an off-the-cuff open panel discussion program like Bill Maher's doesn't mean they aren't way smarter/funnier than Maher without the backing of writers. Plus their delivery is clearly better than his.

Dirty 01-21-2011 02:11 PM

I love Colbert's delivery, one of the best in comedy. I hate Stewart's though, I think it's why I don't find him that funny.

I like Carlin, but I've always thought he was over rated... He's funny, but not that funny in my opinion. The grumpy swearing old man act gets old for me I guess
