I don't know, i went in with the same expectations as i did every episode.

I found the dog episode heartwarming :(

And saying every episode focused on fry and lela's relationship is exaggerating a little don't you think?

And the romance between lela and fry has always been still been in line with futurama. I mean, fry sells his hands to the freakin' robot devil to impress her.

Or when bender competes for the love of a female robot against a dude named Flexo, with the only visible difference between them is that he has a goatee.

Or what about Amy going out with kif, an alien?

My point is that, yes they did try to add romance into the mix, but they always kept it ridiculous, and it always felt like futurama.

i didn't say every episode focused on it, only those after the show came back on air as a mid-season replacement for some other failed fox sitcom.

the robot devil episode = crossroads.

the more i think about it the worse that last half season on tv seems. what made the show great for me was the way the writers were able to take legitimate metaphysical concepts and present them in a hilarious and entertaining way that just about anyone could grasp (and talk about a unique angle for a tv show). the whole relationship angle (like every other single tv show ever) always seemed tacked on to appeal to a wider target demographic.

the movies seem to have freed the writers to go back to focusing on the theoretical science that gave the show it's unique qualities in the first place. i'd hate to see them have to reel it back in so they can write some more fluffy relationship crap so it scores higher with tv test audiences.

All the movies are blurred togethor to me, so forgive me for not being able to tell you the title, but in one of them isnt a large portion of the plot being lela and future-fry's romance?

Or Kif and Amy's Wedding?

The movie's share the same amount of romance as the show.

Even if futurama fell into some of the same cliche's as other sitcoms, it never got to the point where it weakened the show for me. In fact i never even thought about it until you pointed it out.

I don't think it was the writers intention to cater to a larger audience, but instead felt like adding some depth and human emotion to their characters, no matter how absurd they are.

It's a spoof of Christine or Carrie; I can't remember the title of the book but I'm pretty sure it's loosely based on a King novel (with some slight Werewoflish differences.)

I have to agree with mr. dave here though. Futurama is at it's best when it's intelligent and geeky as opposed to sappy but I don't really think it's ever been that bad.
