Believe it or not, back in the day kids really DID wank off to this.

My toop 10.

1.Chrono Trigger: Greatest game ever made, or at least the most engaging.
2.System Shock: Probably the most important game ever made in its time.
3.Pokemon Red: Who didn't love this game?
4.Sacrifice: Blends experimental with familiar brilliantly.
5.Halo: Say what you will, the first never got old.
6.Mischeif Makers: Oh the wasted afternoons. . .
7.LOZ: Majora's Mask: Don't get me wrong I love Ocarina of Time, but this game I found infinately more abstract and disturbing, especially for an 9 year old.
8.Undying: One of the greatest FPS ever.
9.KOTOR: ****ing obvious, still play that mother****er.
10.Grim Fandango: If not the best still the coolest.

Honorable Mentions:
Dark Seed
Little Big Planet
Half-Life
Super Mario 64
Castlevania
Metroid Prime
blablabla

Nah man, unless she's played by Angelina I've never been a Lara Croft fan.

There's much better pixelated booty out there.

Wow. When I was in college a friend of mine had that game and I remember thinking how amazing the graphics were, I can't believe how awful it looks now. Just look at her face!

boo boo 09-14-2009 10:19 PM

Yeah, 2D games have aged a LOT better visually than the early 3D games, despite being older.

IMO a lot of 8 bit and 16 bit games are still gorgeous, and there's still some great looking 64 bit games (N64 clearly pwned PS1 in the graphics department) but it's hard to get past all the polygons.

Oh dude No Mercy is still the best wrestling game to ever be made. The fighting system was perfect, the create a wrestler was easy to use and made it easy to create some of the new additions to WWF's 2000-2001 roster. Oh man my friend and I had so much fun playing this game back in the day...

boo boo 09-14-2009 10:54 PM

By comparison, a lot of old 2D games still look very nice.

Hey now, that's what video games looked like when I was a kid! Are you trying to tell me I'm old?

In all seriousness, even back then there were some games that were kind of cool looking, like Yar's Revenge:

I love the old school look of NES games, and a lot of the old arcade classics as well.

This game is 30 years old and it still has more color than Gears of War.

That's new skool. I'm talking Atari 2600 here! And I'd just like to say I still own mine—sitting in a closet about 15 feet behind me as I type this—and I still have a copy of Yar's Revenge.

boo boo 09-14-2009 11:27 PM

Atari is before my time, but I do enjoy some Atari games.

By the time I started playing video games, the NES and Genesis was what it was all about.

Junior high for me though in some ways that means the NES had more of an impact on me, or at least in a different way. I actually just bought a Mega Man collection and a Sonic collection to reminisce with. Some of those Atari games were pretty kickass though. Chopper Command, The Empire Strikes Back, Venture, Cosmic Ark, Atlantis and the aforementioned Yar's Revenge all come to mind as really great Atari games.

OH HELL YES! i remember playing that one a whole lot back in the day.

i still think the absolute, bar none, top of the pile, same screen multiplayer game is Warlords. again, a classic 2600 game.

http://www.ataritimes.com/images/2600/warlords1.gif

we started playing this game in college, in 1999, we'd chose it over starcraft, quake 1,2,3, and the original unreal tournament for 4 player action. a dude on the top floor of our dorm had a bunch of 2600s and we'd take breaks from our LAN to game up there haha.

I've never even heard of that one before. Maybe I should try and track down a copy.

You know what was another pretty fun multiplayer one? Combat. Especially the levels with the bouncing bullets. (Looking at the picture makes me glad we had a black and white TV when I was growing up though.)

FETCHER. 09-15-2009 06:37 AM

1. Donkey Kong, 1981 version.
2. Frogger, yet again 1981 version. frogger was amazing back in the day.
3. Mario Brothers, 1983 version.
4. Pacman, 1980 version. how could i not include it?
5. all the 'Super Mario Brothers'
6. Sonic The Hedgehog
7. Tomb Raider
8. Street Fighter
9. Mortal Kombat
10. am i allowed to include, Snake? that was class.

those are the 10 i can remember playing most. i wasnt even a twinkle in my daddys eye when most of these came out, i have a brother 9 years older than me, so its excusable :)

combat was another top notch competitive game but only 2 players. what really set warlords apart was the 4 player match, it's usually bundled in arcade classic titles for modern systems. the gameplay itself is a combo of breakout and pong.

How did the four-player work? Weren't there only two joystick jacks on the 2600?

Arya Stark 09-15-2009 04:16 PM

Where is FaSho in all of this mess? xD

Edit: Oh my goodness! 1,000 posts. [=

maybe on the very first models but every atari i played on had 4 jacks in the back, most only had 2 joysticks, but there were definitely 4 plugs. the controls for warlords were dirt simple too. you spun the wheel around to move your shield and held the button if you wanted to catch and hold the 'fireball' before shooting it at an opponent's base.

Ah, maybe mine does have four jacks. It been a couple years since I've taken it out of the box.

boo boo 09-15-2009 05:44 PM

I used to have one of those Atari things with the games built in that you could plug into your tv but I broke it, made me sad. :(

Yar's Revenge was one of the games and it was awesome.

One of my favorite Atari games is Berzerk, kinda predates Metal Gear as the first stealth based game.

http://www.videogamecritic.net/images/2600/berzerk.png

Sure realistic physics and graphics are great and all, but I'll take this over next gen shooters anyday.

Form an orderly queue.

mr dave 09-15-2009 06:18 PM

i remember the commercial for berzerk being WAY cooler than the game was when i finally tried it. or maybe it was the comic book ads, either way, hype >>>>> product.

as awesome as berzerk was it wasn't anything compared to robotron

http://www.ebogjonson.com/mt-static/images/robotron.jpg

shouldn't surprise anyone to learn that the main developer behind this classic went on to create Smash TV

boo boo 09-15-2009 06:35 PM

Ah yes, Smash TV is one of the best arcade games ever, and certainly one of the hardest.

BIG MONEY, BIG PRIZES, I LOOOOOOOVE IT!

Seriously, talk about a game that should have a sequel but unfortunately never will. :(

Some of the best Genesis games sadly came out when people were too hyped over the upcoming PS1 and N64 to really pay them any attention. Ristar was one of them.

C'mon Urban, we all had that awkward stage in life.

mr dave 09-15-2009 06:43 PM

you won 478354 VCRs!!!!

hahaha

as for lara croft and kids wanting to wank to her 3d image back in the day. i don't remember it. yes there was a bunch of hoopla about her chest, but any warez site that had tomb raider for download also had virtual valerie for those pathetic and desperate enough to want the 'interaction' of a video game character instead of net porn.

Again, I was never big on Lara Croft, not just because of how damn awkward she looked in game but her overall design as well, when they revamped her design to look more like Angelina, well then she got a lot hotter.

But give me Samus Aran or Cammy White anyday. :thumb:

mr dave 09-16-2009 02:42 AM

yeah Samus could kick all the female heroes butts at the same time.

tomb raider was a great franchise back in the day. nothing really compared. too bad they almost ran it into the ground with horrible sequels early on. the first 3d Prince of Persia game blew the crap out of any tomb raider action i'd ever had up to that point.

I consider myself a nostalgic gamer though I've more experience with old computers than consoles from my childhood. There was the spectrum, my Commodore 64, Amstrad and eventually AMIGA 500 which were awesome. Of course there was Nintendo as well and I was ecstatic when I first got a super nes.

Anyways, many of those games are still fun and even though I've no longer got my old hardware, I've got loads of emulating software to help me reenjoy those old titles. Still - I have to say - if you go back far enough in the history of gaming, it doesn't take long before there's 100 bad games for every good one. Not everything was better before so nostalgia can be overrated too. I remember especially Commodore 64 had so many crap titles.

Bruce Lee kicked serious ass, though. :)

It's one of those old platform games that I still find entertaining to this day.

boo boo 09-16-2009 11:42 AM

Anyone remember Moonwalker for the Genesis?

http://images.intomobile.com/wp-cont...moonwalker.jpg

Sure, in terms of gameplay is wasn't that good of a game. But c'mon, Michael Jackson kicking fairy dust into people's faces, taking out whole gangs with the power of dance and turning into a giant laser shooting robot? All while grooving to Beat It?

Yeah, that was freaking awesome.
