I must admit, I am stumped. Have I been beaten at last :(

It's a rather short film (about 50 min) by a well known director and it's about a saint (whose name is in the title of the film) who lived for years on a column in an absolute asceticism, and about temptations. The film is full of humor and irony. Apparently Vatican was stumped too.

I am leaning to Pasolini for some reason. |
No it's not Pasolini although he had 'The Gospel According to Matthew' around the time of this film.
OK more hints: The saint is Simeon Stylites from 5th c., lived on a pillar for 30 years or something. The director is Spanish. One of his many movies is probably the most famous early surrealist film. Oh and I don't mind the google. If nobody can guess than google is the answer. Or I'll just say it. |
Simon of the Desert by Luis Buñuel. But you didn't leave us much... the googling took 5 seconds :/
I won't count that a victory. |
