Latest book purchase

Just picked this up in HB for a mighty quid. Looks like it will be worth a read.

Latest book purchase

I always get new books, and wonder where to post about them. Most post them in the lounge thread "Last bought", but that doesn't allow much discussions. So finally I thought, books do need a thread, cause usually books that are purchased are not directly read. So posting them in the "what are you reading thread" seems irrelevant.

So my latest bought:

Noticing the love for Terry Pratchett on the boards, I needed to start somewhere:

http://void-star.net/x/wp-content/up...e.free.men.jpg

I felt that a book written by Dostoevsky, in less than 2000 pages, must be bought:

** If you (as in the mods) feel this thread is useless and redundant, you can close it.

About to get started on this, looks really interesting.

^ It is one great book, but it can take a part of your spirit when reading it. I got depressed every time I read more than 5 pages at a time. Which makes it one of the greatest books ever written imo.

Melissa. I didn't mean to hijack your thread- sorry! I just copied my post from yesterday as it was a new book purchase but it has become the first post due to the original time it was posted :(

lol no worries, I actually don't like to have my name as the "thread creator". As long as the thread still exists I'm happy.

Love Dostoevsky. Crime and Punishment was my first, because it was the only one of his books I could find that wasn't so intimidatingly long. Such a good novel.

Sansa Stark 01-09-2010 03:13 PM

^ I own that, but I'm a bit intimidated by it, I should just stop being a sissy and get to it

http://www.nataliemaclean.com/book/p...Big%20City.jpg

But I LOVE this book. I had to buy it. After the first chapter, my mind was blown.

NumberNineDream 01-11-2010 10:20 AM

This arrived from Amazon today... bought it mostly for the illustrations, let's hope it got some Lewis Caroll spirit.

Terry Bisson's Fire On The Mountain, a story of a Black Utopia in the Deep South...

zeppy111 01-14-2010 08:28 AM

The Mosquito Coast by Paul Theroux...

Have to read it for some school thing, not thinking much of it so far.

If anyone has read this or come across it, please tell me it livens up as you continue?

50p each from a car boot sale round the corner. Can't really argue with that, especially with that Cohen book among them.

storymilo 01-17-2010 04:57 PM

^Have you read other Hornby?

How To Be Good, High Fidelity and Fever Pitch, all of which are favourites of mine. Haven't opened the new one there just yet, but every other Hornby book I've read has such a charm to it. Easily one of my favourite authors.

I like his stuff as well. High Fidelity is easily my favorite, but How To Be Good and A Long Way Down are cool as well. I didn't like Slam as much as the others unfortunately, and I haven't read anything else.

Haven't come across Slam myself, but I'd definitely pick it up if it's going on the cheap. It's neck-in-neck between the three I've read when it comes to my pick of the bunch. Fever Pitch is great stuff, but of course it strikes much more of a chord if you're an avid footie/soccer fan.

Scarlett O'Hara 01-18-2010 04:42 AM

This, but have to get through the current book I'm reading before I get into it:

Just Coraline and Good Omens. I've only started reading him a while ago

ProggyMan 01-23-2010 12:32 PM

Coraline is wonderful, haven't read Good Omens. Read American Gods, it's one of the best books I've ever read.

Scissorman 01-23-2010 02:27 PM

He wrote Good Omens with Terry Pratchett. It's hilarious

American Gods by far. The protagonist, Shadow, is easily one of the most likable protagonists I've ever come across in a story. It's a longer book, but when you get started it's really hard to put down. Also if you have ANY interest in mythology then you'll most likely enjoy it and thanks to the God of War franchise, most teenage boys do have some interest in mythology.

Hehe.. never played God Of War but I do love me some greek gods. I'll add it to my "to read" stack.

Well Odin is one of the main characters so you pretty much have to now.

Well Odin is a Norse god if I'm not mistaken..?

But the Norse gods are actually far more badass anyways.

You're not, that's what happens when I'm trying to do 5 different things at once as well as drink a glass of bourbon.

AMERICAN GODS. Everything everyone said is true and more. It's also a bit of a philosophical book as well, it tackles consumerism, environmentalism, immigration and anything else you can think of.

Awesome. I have that book he did with Terry Pratchett as well, so I'll read that too since Terry Pratchett is cool.
