Default Your Favorite Avant-Garde Cinema

Thread title = what you post.

I absolutely adore The Love of Zero by Robert Florey. It's a quirky little love story that has it's roots in German Expressionism which I've also always loved as a genre.

The Blood of a Poet by Jean Cocteau
Enchanting little film, early surrealism from 1930.

Last Year at Marienbad by Alain Resnais from 1961
The most hypnotic and dream like film I've seen. Thoroughly visual and cinematic take on memory and perception. Excellent film!

To skip the opening credits jump on 3 min. mark...

I think I already posted this hilarious user review from imdb, but it's so great and to the point actually, that I'm gonna do it again:
Quote:
So - Last Year At Marienbad, in a nutshell, assume French Accent:

Verse 1: Man: I know you. Woman: You do not know me. Man: We were here. Woman: I was never here. Chorus: Man: Long strange monologue about the place that they are at, Marienbad. And how he has been here before and how she has been here before. Camera: panning about the ornate Marienbad mansion. Verse 2: (repeat verse 1 - add very interesting game of pick-up sticks) Chorus repeat verses 1 & 2

I think everyone should see this film. I don't know why. I have seen it numerous times. No, I have never seen it. Yes, I saw it last year! No, last year I did not see it. Yes, I saw it here, with me. Wait, I'm alone. Who am I talking to?
More to come...

Yeah

And The Love of Zero is really interesting. I haven't seen it before, hell, I don't believe I even heard of it before. I have to get on a silent film kick one of these days...

I wouldn't call Last Year at Marienbad Avant-Garde but I love it nevertheless. French new wave is fascinating.

Cremaster Cycle is beautiful. All you need is a bit of patience to watch it

And I really like this:

Maya Deren - Meshes of the Afternoon

That's one of my absolute favourite short films. Maya Deren is a fantastic director, everything (apart from A Meditation on Violence, which is somewhat mediocre and is overwhelmed by its theoretical burdens) that she touches becomes amazing.

Here's one of my favourite avant-garde films, and one of my all time favourites in films as a whole. I've seen it countless times and still love it as much as I did when I first saw it.

Begotten (1990) Probably NSFW, unless your boss is cool with you watching disembowelments, post mortem handjobs, etc.
