Maybe because my armor sucked or something, but the Falmer still were a pain in the ass for me even at around level 45. It wasn't unusual for me to get two shot killed by some d-bag archer from 200 feet away, or get stuck in the execution motion from one of those two handed axe wielding guys. This of course usually set me back to the beginning of the dungeon (probably 15-30 min. gameplay lost) because I always forget to save.

Are you talking about in the Shimmering Cave? I found the Chorus far tougher than the Falmer.

Those big creepy black beatle things? They were tougher for me at first as well. But for some reason, I'm not sure why, the Falmer seem to have gone up in toughness as I've leveled up. I can breeze through Chaurus without much difficulty (except the giant ones in that Lighthouse) but there are some Falmer like the Shadowmaster and Nightprowler which kill me pretty fast.

I have to seperate the Chaurus and lure them to a trap where I can use Lydia to attack them and me from behind, fire works quite well on them as well. I'm still on level 8 but have a lot of time over the weekend to level up.
The Frost spiders really spook me out but at least they are easy to kill.

yeah I always found the falmer to be one of the tougher opponents, I hoard crap so I stick with light armour. It's the forsworn I have the most issues with, they tend to be way too unpredictable

Oh man, I think exploring that Lighthouse was my favorite Skyrim moment yet. I was just wandering along the Northern coast early in my Skyrim career, not doing anything quest-related, when I found it. It plays out like a horror-movie, with the notes and bodies and monsters and things. Very well done.

I think you get the quest to check up on the lighthouse in Solitude, but I guess you can just stumble over it and recieve the quest on location as well.
