Bill Hicks, no contest.
In modern terms, I got Chris Addison's DVD and it's quite good. Like that guy.

Bill Hicks is a legend, but my true favorite is George Carlin.

Although not strictly a stand-up comedian, my favourite comedian is without doubt David Mitchell. His sketch shows and Peep Show are genius (granted, he is bouncing lines off Robert Webb).

i've said it before (although maybe not here :) ).....nobody comes close to the absolute comic genius of......STEVE MARTIN

Spoiler for punchline:
"that cat was the best fuck i've ever had!"

classic

and he does balloon animals!

Mitch Hedberg, George Carlin, Demitri Martin and Bo Burnham.

Bill Hicks. George Carlin. Dave Chapelle. Although I'm more a fan of his show than his stand up.

Dennis Miller, George Carlin, Mitch Hedberg, Bill Hicks

That's pretty much it for me. I used to like Dave Chapelle, but I still find his whole "Blind and Black KKK Member" Bit hilarious.

Anyone else not see the appeal in Mitch Hedberg at all? Too much of a one-liner, punchline comedian for my tastes.

I love Carlin, my favorite as well... but he and Hicks are on the same level. I think Carlin, as much as I love him, had his share of not so great acts over the years (99% of "Complaints and Grievances", most of "Life is Worth Losing" and some bits from other albums). He was either really funny or really off his rocker.

But the other side is Hicks didn't have as much material, and his act over the years was mainly just rehasing the same bits over and over, while Carlin was always writing new stuff... if Hicks put the same amount of time and effort into coming up with new stuff, I think he could have surpassed Carlin though.
