Game Installation and Patches Help Thread

This is a thread to help people having trouble installing certain games onto their computer. If you notice a bug or an error preventing you from installing or playing a game then come here where someone might be able to help.

I have had trouble with a couple of older games, getting them installed on a Windows 7 32-bit computer. At the moment I can't get Diablo 2 to install correctly. It goes through the installation process but then won't load into game play. Anyone else have this issue?

Is there a patch I need to install to fix this?

I doubt people have this specific issue enough to warrant its own thread when this could very well be asked in the tech support thread, but you're the boss.

Anyway, have you tried running Diablo 2 in XP compatibility mode?

Always check for a patch first.

You'll probably have to search the Blizzard site yourself since I only get linked to the US version but - Diablo II Patch Information - Support - Battle.net Support

I realize this is two weeks old but if you're still not killing all sorts of demons and stuff this other thread might help - Battle.net - English Forums -> Windows Vista/7 and Diablo II

And if that doesn't work... just get Titan Quest.

I've found the best way to install some old DOS games seem to be to get a DOSBox frontend which typically lets you set up profiles for different games. That lets you f.ex mount isos or folders as CD/DVD Roms, something which may be necessary for old installers.

You don't need the frontend, but they help you in the sense that you don't have to learn all the right arguments for mounting CDROM in Dosbox. I'm lazy

Another handy tip for nostalgia gamers is to make simple shortcuts for your old games with dosbox. Just make a shortcut to dosbox.exe, then add the file you want to run in it (game exe) as an argument.

The above runs the game Darklands on my comp. The -exit and -fullscreen arguments tell dosbox that it should quit once you exit the game and that it should be run in fullscreen.

Regarding classic games, I heard a ton of good things about gog.com (short from good old games). Not only do they usually include a ton of extras like graphics, manuals etc but also apparently make sure all their games are patched and can be run on modern machines without using the dos command line.
Like when you buy Baldurs Gate 2 for 10$, you also get the Throne of Baal expansion pack and 2 manuals (181 pages),15 HD wallpapers, soundtrack,13 avatars
,87 artworks, a map and a Throne of Bhaal reference card. Sounds like a complete package.
And no, they're not paying me

Gog.com is awesome I love them!

They usually run their stuff through dosbox as well so it's quite easy to "gogify" your own games. However, I'm happy to let them do it for me and support them economically.

Wow that is awesome, I can't believe I haven't heard of them! I got Baulders gate 4 in one for cheap online but the wallpapers and soundtrack would have been great! The artworks in Arcanium are beautiful.

Or you could head out to your local game shop (if they still carry pc titles) and find the recently released D&D Master Collection which includes all the BG games and expansions, the Icewind Dale games and expansion, Planescape Torment, and The Temple of Elemental Evil. All for $20.

Yes, I'm ass whipping demons all over the place as a Necromancer, freaking awesome! Still trying to get the best weapons to kill the dude in the second quest. He keeps firing at me and totally nailing my health. Any clues on how I can destroy him easily? Still learning the ropes, I'm struggling to figure out how the Magic works.
