Instant Netflix Thread

Not a bad idea. Instant Netflix has been one of the services I've used in the last year that has really curbed my piracy (with Spotify being the other one). I've managed to finally catch some movies I've been meaning to see for some time, but never really felt like going through the effort of dragging my ass down to the video store and renting it. That said though, Instant Netflix can be a bit of a dumping ground for a lot of rubbish while all the good stuff is withheld for the more traditional mail service. Despite that, there are some genuinely great movies and TV shows on it so I think it's worth devoting a thread to help people share what movies are good, which ones are surprisingly good, what Netflix recommends to you, how many ridiculous sub categories come up, etc.

I think it would also be good if you would tell which region or country you are in because I know that some movies and shows aren't available in every country.

I'll start it off.

Spaced

If you enjoyed some of the latter Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg material like Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and have only heard about Spaced, now is your chance to fill in a hole. All 14 episodes of the comedy series is currently up on Netflix in the US and holy crap this is easily one of the best shows I've seen in recent memory. It really reminds me of early Scrubs with its bizarre, non-sequitur, surreal humour and tendency to have cut-away gags, but remembers what Seth MacFarlene forgot with making these cut-away gags integral to the character's development. Definitely check this one out.

Netflix Instant has been suffering quite a bit lately. It's slim pickings for movies nowadays after Stars buckled under the film industries pressure and pulled out. It's sad that a great service like this suffers because of corporate penny pinching and property whoring. Who the fuck is still making money off of some Nick Cage movie from 97? Vultures.

Key 04-19-2012 11:42 AM

I love Netflix instant. I've watched a bunch of shows and movies that I probably would have never seen otherwise. Plus the fact that I don't really like movie theater's too much.

Some TV shows I managed to watch were:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

Seasons 1 through 3 of Breaking Bad:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

And some horror movies that people have recommended to me.

Phantom Limb 04-19-2012 11:46 AM

http://twscritic.files.wordpress.com...bre-poster.jpg

This is easily one of the most intense movies I've seen (alongside City of God and Hotel Rwanda). It's essentially about a young man in the MS-13 somewhere down in south america who wants out of the gang. It's extremely sad and brutal, but this is also most definitely in my top 10 movies of all time. Possibly even top 5. Everyone should see this at least once.

Losing Stars definitely hurt its catalog, but I still think overall it's one of the best services for the price. Unlimited viewing for only $7.99 a month? It definitely isn't the place to go if you're looking for some of the really big movies like Avatar or David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but if you're into foreign movies or horor movies the service is a gold mine. Hell, even their TV selection is proving to be incredibly well selected, with shows I genuinely wanted to watch but never got around to (like Breaking Bad) or just shows I like to watch for an episode every now and then like King of the Hill or South Park.

someonecompletelyrandom 04-19-2012 11:59 AM

TV is by far the best part of Netflix. Binge watching a series I never got to see when it aired is something I do every few months. Also nice for catching up on series that are still on.

LoathsomePete 04-19-2012 12:19 PM

Well the major point of this thread is to help people so they don't have to wade through the thick layers of mediocrity to find the really good things on the service, so here's a list of some of the movies I've watched recently on Netflix that are available in the US.

The Crow (1994)

Some movies don't age well with time, and while there are some aspects of this film that look incredibly dated, it's still one of the better comic adaptations and really manages to make the setting feel like a character in the movie.

50 Dead Men Walking (2008)

Pretty much The Departed (2006) but set in North Ireland. A man infiltrates the IRA and feeds information to British Police to help stop violence against Irish or British citizens.

Trollhunter (2010)

Norwegian mockumentary about the day-to-day life of a "trollhunter", a man employed by the Norwegian government to keep the nation's troll population in check and make sure they stay away from populated areas. Some great CGI and cinematography in this film.

Session 9 (2001)

Well done psychological thriller about a group of asbestos cleaners working on restoring a deteriorating mental asylum that has its own dark past. My personal favourite Brad Anderson movie and one that I like to show to friends as an example of subtly being used to great effect.

The Dark Crystal (1982) & Labyrinth (1986)

Two classic movies from the 1980's. Chances are you've probably already seen them but they're worth a retread, nostalgia cannot be denied.

Following (1998)

Christopher Nolan's first feature film, a bleak little black and white piece about voyeurism. Not perfect, but really showcases his potential as a director before proving his chops with Memento (2000), which is also on Netflix.

Brick (2005)

I cannot recommend this one enough. Modern day film noir set in a high school staring Joseph Gorden-Levitt as he attempts to solve the mysterious death behind his ex-girlfriend. A great little whodunit marred only by a script that can be a little cryptic on your first viewing, but still definitely worth your time.

I will add some more later.

Exo 04-19-2012 02:38 PM

Netflix is my baby. I almost want to buy stock in it because I know a lot about the company and how it works. They've gone through some **** over the last year or two but they provide a wonderful service in watching things that you'll never see in a blockbuster or on television. If you want to get the absolute best out of Netflix then you're going to have to have an interest in the following...

Documentaries
TV shows
Foreign films
Mostly B level horror movies
Limited release/Indie films

That's good for now. Maybe I'll make a second list soon. Also, if some of those aren't on netflix instant anymore then I apologize. I didn't check the availability on some of the ones I watched a while ago.

Stupid question, but is Instant Netflix different than Netflix? Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm just wondering.

It's the same thing but has a different function. Netflix had two services...

DVD by mail.
Instant streaming.

You can set up your plan to have as much as four DVDs sent to you at a time.

Streaming can be done on almost anything. My damn blu ray player has a damn netflix application. Mostly every video game console can play netflix. Your smart phone and computer can as well. Some smart TVs can also do it. It's fun.

LoathsomePete 04-19-2012 03:32 PM

Sadly, if you run a Linux OS you cannot use Streaming Linux as I just found out. Luckily I have a Nintendo Wii that does nothing but collect dust and disgust me and now have put it to good use, although trying to type in the name of a movie can be quite troublesome.

Okay, that's what I thought it was. My parents have the Netflix channel on the Wii, so I've used it :)

You can plug most USB keyboards into the Wii to type stuff in.

I had netflix until I could no longer have the US version, so I cancelled it. It's a shame really because it was excellent.

Burning Down 04-19-2012 05:16 PM

I wish Netflix had more Canadian content available. Like films and such. Unless it's already all there and I just missed it... I don't think so though. Everything is so American lol!

Glad that they have Kids in the Hall though. I watched all the episodes.

Frownland 04-19-2012 06:59 PM

Great idea for a thread. Here's a couple of other great films that are on Netflix:

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...V1._SY317_.jpg
Melancholia

It's easily among Lars von Trier's best work. It has some amazing cinematography and a scifi plot that evades cheesiness and it is a great character study of those with depression in times of distress.

http://ia.media-imdb.com/images/M/MV...V1._SY317_.jpg
Sayat Nova or The Color of Pomegranates

This is a fantastic art film that explores Armenian culture and the life of poet Sayat Nova. It definitely requires multiple viewings and should not be taken lightly, but it is one of the most beautiful and astonishing films ever made. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves classic art films or just art films in general.

That's all for now.

Unknown Soldier 06-25-2012 04:51 PM

I've been thinking about getting Netflix, just wondered how good it was for older films and tv series from the 1960s etc?

They've got a pretty mixed bag of classics and even some Pre-Code era movies like Un Chien Andalou and White Zombie (in the US market at least). They've also got a decent little selection of '60's and early '70's material like Breakfast at Tiffany's, Chinatown, Bonnie & Clyde, The Wolfman, Peeping Tom, House on Haunted Hill, The Last Man on Earth, The Masque of the Red Death, and a whole lot of Westerns of which I'm unaware of their pedigree.

Again keep in mind this is from the American side, I'm unsure of what is available in the U.K. but for what the service costs I think you get a lot of bang for your buck so long as you use it.

*Puts hand up*

I'm still using it!

The UK Netflix library will, I'm assuming, continue to expand and hopefully quickly. It really isn't great to be honest. I noticed that Thor was just added to the US library? There is no way that you will find content like that added to the UK library so quickly. I'm flicking between the US and UK libraries and although the US one is by far and away the better of the two, the UK one has a few little advantages and so I cant really grumble.

Even the British TV section of the US library is better than the UK library and that just makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

PS. Although the US one doesnt have Red Dwarf. 1-0.

Exo 06-26-2012 12:25 PM

What are the other advantages? I'm curious.

It only £5.99 a month here and I think they give you the first month free as well.

I just remember making a note of a few things I wanted to watch on the UK one and then, when logged in to the US one, I searched for them and they weren't there. It's difficult for me to remember off the top of my head which shows were on which library though. They will have been UK TV shows, I'm sure.

Red Dwarf was one of them. I think that maybe Teachers, Outnumbered, Deadset and The Thick Of It were also only on the UK one? Could be wrong.

They give you a free trial with the e-mail address you sign up with, yes. I'm sure you see the flaw in their registration process here.

I would like to add however that I do pay for my account.....

i was too stupid to realise this

Oh, it did? Thats a shame! Yeah, I recently watched all of it on Netflix. I hadnt seen it again since I used to watch it at the time when I was a young 'un so I very much enjoyed it.

Holerbot6000 07-05-2012 02:06 PM

I cancelled cable TV because it was costing me $85 a month just for the basics, and I have found Netflix Instant to be a most worthy substitute, especially for $8. I have seen a lot of films I would not have seen otherwise because I'd simply never heard of them. About my only criticism is that there are a lot of really crappy documentaries you have to wade through to get to the good ones, but that's not really Netflix fault. Here are my recommendations so far:

Battlestar Galactica - This is like sci-fi crack. Best sci fi show ever? Hmmm.
Goon - Just saw this - Excellent and hilarious - a real surprise.
Dragon Tattoo Trilogy - Really faithful to the books and well acted. The Swedish girl is much more what I pictured than the American girl who plays Lisbeth in the US movie.
Winnebago Man - Funny. Sad. Weird.
Bronson - Absolutely brutal - makes you laugh and flinch at the same time.
Saturday Night Live 1970's - There was a lot less comedy in the first season than I remember, but what's there is wonderfully dark and weird, unlike anything they do today.
Rubber - Telekinetic tire with anger mgmt issues - what else do you need?
We Jam Econo - Story of the Minutemen - great music doc.
Drive - very 70's in style and execution - a bit overrated maybe but worth watching.
The Wild and Wonderful Whites - Fascinating/Disgusting doc about the ultimate white trash family. The girl snorting oxy after having her baby was classic. I wanted to take a shower when it was over.

LoathsomePete 07-08-2012 11:04 AM

I really wish Netflix would stop recommending me TV shows I've already watched. Seriously my top 10 recommendations are ALL shows I've watched before.

LaraP 07-12-2012 09:59 AM

We just got Netflix Instant a couple of months ago, and I wondered if it was just me -- or if the streaming movie offers were just kind of...bad. They don't change much, do they?

That being said, I'm going nuts watching a LOT of great TV shows I never had time to watch -- the top two being Mad Men and now, Breaking Bad. Just started BB but it's getting good. For comedy, I really like Parenthood right now. Thought about giving White Collar a shot too.

Being Human looks interesting, but are there two different ones? Confused on that.

You need to do research and find the gems that aren't displayed in the categories. Rate movies as well. Netflix learns to know your preference. Also, check these two websites.
