Does the film specify this, i didn't remember that.

For a species that would eliminate us because our violent tendencies they sure were violent themselves though. What was the original intent of human life do you think? If they go directly to each planet to develop these new life forms (the film mentions how the planet prometheus takes place on was establishe as a test site, so as to not endanger their home) why isn't their any evidence of them on earth?

Everything else you said was awesome though and made sense of a lot of things for me.

Yes, they tested the age of the head and determined it was over 2000 years old and the movie starts in 2089 and their expedition takes place in 2094. It may have not been because of our violent tendencies... It may have been because we weren't worshiping them. Then again, even though they could be violent they may have wanted to create a race that was more perfect than them. If we were to create a race of intelligent creatures, I can imagine we would want them to be as perfect as possible even though we fight amongst each other.

I don't think they were stockpiling eggs on the ship in the first Alien--I think the eggs were there as a result of them overthrowing their masters, the space jockeys. This is made evident by the space jockey with the burst chest in the original film...

Spoiler for Alien & Prometheus:
Although it's hard to say, I've assumed that the aliens were a biological weapon made by the "space jockeys", even before seeing Prometheus. Whether they were "stockpiled" in the ship in Alien, it's hard to say .. they definitely turned on the crew as you mention, likely causing it to crash. The only other place we see a collection of eggs like that in the Alien movies is in the queen's chamber in Aliens which is logical as she's the one who lays them. As there's no queen on board the ship from Alien (that we can see), it could be that the eggs were stockpiled in the chamber where they found them.

The way the vases were arranged on the floor of that room in Prometheus instantly reminded me of the eggs from Alien.

i have just had so much joy reading all of you posts :)

its weird i personally have a very different view on all of this.....

first and foremost.....as Scott said....this is not a prequel but does take place in the "Alien" universe......having read that i feel like i went into this film very much thinking that

Spoiler for Bob's take :):
alright i feel there were two definite answers 1) what the space jockey was....although not what that one was doing there 2) what the "Alien" is....again without ever even hinting at it's existence......although i loved the fact that all the little and big creatures throughout Prometheus were very similar to the "Alien"....ie acid for blood, face sucking, and that thing at the end was very similar in body style as well as the interior mouth....what i loved was the kind of open ended idea that.....this is nothing more than one of several stations on that planet of what these "engineers" were doing.....going into this i assumed that this film would explain what the derelict space craft was doing there....within five minutes of them landing on the planet i dropped that idea.....i mean the planet in Alien looked nothing like Iceland....whereas this planet looked very similar :).....right at that moment i decided to drop my fan boy nature and attempt to accept this as something completely different.....and i fell it delivered this is possibly the best example of a prequel that honestly has practically nothing to do with the other films.....seriously YAY!!!!.....and i agree 100% with Tore about the vases.....as well as with Violent & Funky about the creature destroying the creator.....i cannot wait to see this film again :)

I still feel it was an egg stockpile...they were kept stable by the blue misty sensor field thingy. I just think it got out of hand for them, as it did in Prometheus. I also thought this was another cool connection in Prometheus to Alien. Their presence in the chamber affected the environment, causing the mural to change and the goop to start pouring out of the vases. Kane's presence in the egg chamber caused a single egg to open and nail him in the face.

As I mentioned I'm starting to think that the Aliens are their own life form and the space jockeys have simply taken advantage of their adaptable DNA. I don't think they made them...but I think they stockpile them and use them to do their bidding.

It's probably meant to be more of a lesson...even advanced beings can't contain the Alien. Humans tried to put them under controlled conditions in Resurrection and they still got out and ****ed **** up.

Guybrush 06-11-2012 11:30 AM

Spoiler for Prometheus:
I'd forgotten about the "laser mist" from Alien and agree that it's plausible that it was a way of somehow controlling the alien eggs.

Hm .. could be. There's a mural in Prometheus with what looks to be a xenomorph alien on it. From that, you'd think the engineers and the xenomorphs have some kind of history prior to Prometheus. Yet, Elizabeth Shaw who is impregnated by the mutated Charlie gives birth to something that looks like a xenomorph (huge octopus-headcrab first, then the alienish creature that comes out of the body of the engineer).

So I guess that means that human/engineer (perfect match) mixed with the mutating/whatever powers of the black goo creates something resembling xenomorphs. Why is this? And should that have no relevance to the history of the xenomorphs? That sounds a bit strange to me.

If the black goo comes from the xenomorphs somehow, your hypothesis could still make sense I guess.

I love that the movie makes me ask so many questions. :)

Spoiler for Prometheus:
I love it to...it's the best kind of sci fi. The script definitely benefited from having some writers from Lost. I'm thinking we may even have to come to terms with the idea that we may never even know how the original derelict craft got there in the first Alien, even in the sequels. Not answering that but still addressing the space jockeys keeps the mystery of the first Alien alive while still giving us sci fi nerds something to obsess over. This was actually something I was worried about with Prometheus - as much as I want those questions answered, part of what made the first Alien so great was the mystery. Specifically revealing what happened would kill some of the mystique.

What I'm starting to think is that the goop when spliced with DNA from another organism ALWAYS results in some form of xenomorph. That's why it still takes on some characteristics of the host...it utilized its DNA to make itself all over again. This is why it was a dog type alien in Alien 3 since it used a dog as a host. The organism is a survivor that always manages to recreate itself. Impregnating Shaw and splicing with one of her eggs directly allowed her to produce another facehugger while not killing her. When combined with the DNA in a non-reproductive capacity, it simply kills.

There are a lot of unanswered questions about this as well...did David know about this? He was experimenting quite a bit and surely he is incredibly smart (being an android). He had to of picked Charlie to infect because he knew he and Shaw were intimate. On that note, I also feel he told the engineer in the end to kill Weyland (or that the group was there to harm him). He did mention earlier that he felt all children must want the deaths of their parents.

I'm starting to go off again on this...but just a couple more things I thought of. Vickers had to be an android. She called Weyland "father" and he had mentioned he never had any kids...David was the closest he had. We also never saw any blood when she died...and her death was very quick. We also never saw her wake up from hypersleep with the crew. That might come back later.

Similarly, Weyland will have to come back in some capacity. Why else would they bother dressing up Guy Pierce in old guy makeup when they could of just found a real old guy. Something's up there.

On that note, at the very end of the credits there is a logo for Weyland and the date 10-11-12. Check out the website What Is 10.11.12? ...it's got some cool stuff. More questions than anything, but it's worth looking into.

Just a quick comment regarding this. I don't think he says he never had kids. He says David is the son he never had, but mentions nothing of daughters.

At least that's how I remember it.

Alfred 06-11-2012 02:12 PM

Going to see this tonight. Stoked!

Violent & Funky 06-11-2012 02:38 PM

Is it possible that the "sequel" for this movie ends up being another prequel? That could possibly be a really cool way to release a franchise of movies, as each movie released exists on a part of a timeline that precedes the previous film...

crash_override 06-11-2012 06:30 PM

A friend of mine said I should read the book(s) before seeing this?

Help?

I don't mean to be harsh but your friend is an idiot.

bob. 06-11-2012 06:43 PM

ah....what books?

this was an original screenplay based in a universe created in an original screenplay....there are novelizations of both Alien and Aliens.....and i'm sure there are hundreds of books/comics involving this universe

so anyone else upset a little about how poorly this film did?

the fact that they are already slated to release the blu ray and amazon is taking pre orders.....although i just saw an interview with Scott where he says there will be a 20 minute extended cut as well as tons of deleted scenes....including a rather long fight between Shaw and the engineer

Sparky 06-11-2012 06:49 PM

I don't think it did poorly,

Sparky 06-11-2012 08:52 PM

yeah i think it would after international release
i also hope they make a tight video game out of this somehow, i think the dudes who did the chronicles of riddick games would be a good choice.

Alfred 06-11-2012 09:14 PM

Saw it tonight and was blown away. I don't think we're likely to get a better big budget thrill ride this year, especially not one with this much style.

Scott definitely recycled a lot of plot points from Alien, but he used them to create something with a much, much broader scope than that film.

I don't think so. I googled batman and that was the best one I found.

i will never doubt chris nolan (insomnia was meh)

It's going to have a definitive ending, which chris in interviews sounded pretty excited about.

Ras a ghul is back so batman is either going to a.) become immortal or b.) have to kill an immortal which should be exciting :D

Exo 06-12-2012 05:09 PM

I'm almost positive Batman will die at the end.

Sparky 06-12-2012 05:14 PM

that just sounds way too obvious/predictable

I don't care how much artistic freedom nolan may have with the license, they still want room for more sequels.

They willl probably show him unconscious, presumably dead, then right before the credits roll, one of his fingers will twitch or something

I don't doubt Nolan either, and if that were to happen I'd be pretty disappointed.

When (cause lets not kid ourselves here) Warner Bros. decides to make a new Batman movie it will most likely be a reboot like what Sony Pictures did with The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). What I really hope they do is try and mimic what Marvel Studios did and do a shared universe continuity with the other DC characters Warner Bros. owns, which is all of them.

Sparky 06-12-2012 06:47 PM

Eh, i never really liked it when batman and superman collaborated. Batmans appeal is because he is mortal, when supermans around the threat of danger just isn't there.

CollingeDesign 06-13-2012 06:50 PM

It looks interesting but at the same time I've got a feeling its going to be a let down but either way I'm still going to check it out and see what's going on.

keep your eyes peeled

I really enjoyed it. The acting was fantastic. Great visuals. Four scenes that were really difficult to watch, which I think is a good quality.

Electrophonic Tonic 06-16-2012 09:33 PM

As someone whose seen Alien only once (but plans on watching it again after seeing Prometheus, and then watching Prometheus again) I really, really liked this. 2001 is probably my favorite movie and Prometheus reminded me a lot of the elements and set up of 2001. The opening shot, first of all, basically set me up for the rest of the movie. There are questions raised, but they didn't force the answers on you and instead left so much of it interpretation.

I almost had the end of the movie correctly predicted with about 30 minutes to go...

Spoiler for spoiler:
When Dr. Shaw and Janek have the conversation where Janek promises that they will bring none of this back to Earth, it was safe to assume Prometheus was going to be destroyed. I figured they couldn't kill ever character off and Dr. Shaw and David seems to be the 2 most likely to survive. I remembered when Dr. Shaw had her "sex scene" earlier in the movie and she mentioned she could not bare children. Also, I remembered all the scenes with David talking about his creator/his existence. Expected them to use the technology from the other ship (based on seeing the other mounds in the opening shot of the valley) to create their own race. Just my idea

Howard the Duck 06-17-2012 02:26 AM

i saw it

i didn't like it

my explanation is thus:-

Spoiler for spoiler:
the Engineers created us as a sort of biological weapons' "host" and were going to bring their Xenomorphic goo to Earth to use us to create some sort of weapon
