I'm just hoping that Sony don't take Microsoft's idea, that'd probably spell the end of my gaming days as I rarely buy video games. Just loan them off of my pal (who seems to have a never ending library of them) and give them back when I'm done. I've been doing that through the current generation, in generation's past I had chipped consoles. It seems the developers are wisening up though, imagine having to pay full price for a second hand game. jeez.

Here's a good analysis of the Xbox 1 reveal from a reputable source.

The new Xbox sounds like garbage, Microsoft will nickel and dime at any opportunity that presents itself, and they seem content to stick with the tired combination of Halo, Gears, Forza, Kinect.

Sony da best.

It's kind of funny how it seems like Microsoft doesn't see Sony as much of a competitor, but rather the new wave of Smart TV's that already let you do pretty much everything non-game related Microsoft showed off yesterday. The lack of backwards compatibility, while not surprising, is a little depressing given how many games the console has in its library. I really don't get the logic behind it either, if I can play Under a Killing Moon on my new PC, then it stands to reason that a game from 3 years ago should be able to still work on a new console. I mean Microsoft didn't even say they were going to do some kind of cloud based gaming for older games like Sony is doing, and while I'm sure not many people are clamoring at the idea of repurchasing games they already own just so they can play it on a new machine, it does at least mean Sony cares about their history. I don't throw away all my old photos just because I buy a new photo album to store them in, it makes no sense to not even bother.

The other thing that has me thinking about the shortsightedness of both Sony and Microsoft is the further emphasis on graphical fidelity, which has always been a selling point for a new console, but here is where it just kind of breaks down. The true potential for the graphics of this console generation are still 3-5 years away, I mean it was 5 years before the PS2 got God of War, and while some game developers got PS4 and Xbox One dev kits awhile ago, many of them didn't so they won't be able to start utilizing all these new resources until both consoles come out.

You'd think with their whole "One" theme, they would have mentioned being able to re-purchase old games from your 360 but I guess they want you to just hang on to your older system and play that one if you want to play those older games.

I'm doing that with the PS4, keeping my PS3 around in case I want to play PS3 games. I do understand that some people trade in their systems to help discount the price of the newer console but if you really want to play your old games, just keep the system around. I don't see how hard that is.

Well I think the backwards compatibility issue it makes the console worth hooking up straight away, even if there's only one or two games for it you want, the ability to still use it to play your old games makes it very convenient. I mean I've heard there's going to be 15 launch titles, but how many of them are also going to be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360? I mean I think Quantum Break is the only exclusive Xbox One game, and while it's definitely an interesting game (I generally like Remedy as a developer), I don't think it'll be enough to convince people to throw down the cash for a new machine if it's going to mean it'll spend a good 6 months to 1 year sitting unplayed.

Games will ultimately make or break a console, and the lack of games the PS3 and ridiculous pricing point (only $599) made Sony spend most of this console generation playing catchup. Nintendo is in a similar position too, albeit one that's a little more exclusive to their own archaic business practices. The WiiU has been on the market for over 6 months now, but is still struggling to push units because nobody thought to release it with anything other than a side scrolling Mario game and a zombie game. I can't really see the fratboy/dudebro demographic going crazy for anything besides Call of Duty: Ghosts, and considering that is also seeing a release on the Xbox 360/PS3 it'll probably sell more copies of those versions as that's where a majority of the online play will still be, unless they link servers between the two versions (I'm not an online multiplayer kind of guy so I don't know if that's possible or not).

So at the end of the day, it really seems like Microsoft are really trying to target the high middle/upper class, most of whom probably already have things like a SmartTV or a Blu-ray player that can do much of what Microsoft is touting the Xbox One can do.

Actually, backward compatibility is the main reason the price point for the ps3 was so high in the beginning. Once they removed that function and the hardware associated with it, they were able to make slimmer devices and drop the price.

I thought the 15 Launch titles would be exclusives or maybe it was 15 exclusives released within the first year.

but yeah if you want backward compatibility you will pay a higher price, without it then the price will be decent.
