Elph only ever posts in this thread to diss good comics I like such as chappelle and patrice cause he doesn't like their politics. He pretends its about the comedy but he has nothing to say about comedy. Its about the politics. Plus it's not goth to laugh. Stay sad, elf.

I rarely find american comedians funny but yeah, this was pretty good.

I don't follow this thread enough to say anything about what jwb likes and why, but I think this is a pretty apt observation about (american?) comedy and why I don't like it. Most of what I've seen just seems very crude and that's all it is, there's no wit in it.

well it's obviously funny to many people, but it's loudest-guy-at-the-bar funny and that doesn't do it for me

Comedy doesn’t translate very well.

Although once in Japan I was in a bar with some other gaijin and a tv was on and it was a comedy show where they did this stunt where they created an entire 5K foot race just to trick this person into having thought he (or she? I can’t remember) won and while they were pumping their arms in the air in triumph they crossed over a breakaway cross way and they fell into a muddy pit and everyone gathered around pointing and laughing from above. It had me in stitches for the entire evening. I still crack up thinking about it. God what a gag.

Comedy is definitely very strongly tied to specific cultures, but in general I dislike similar kinds of comedy from other countries for the same reason. I think the issue is just that it's a relatively dominant form of comedy in america

I don't know what you mean by "they don't tell jokes"

Bill hicks doesn't ****ing tell jokes either. He goes through material. That's what real comedians do. You didn't explain how he lost it or why either he or patrice aren't funny they're just edgy for the sake of it and that's absolute horse**** so that's why it seems political to me. Everything you do and like is based on an image. I like bill hicks and patrice o'neal. I like comedy.

Patrice isn't edgy for the sake of edgy, he's brutally honest for the sake of comedy. People who don't like him usually can't take that kind of honesty.
