It’s probably the most predictable and robotic thinking process I’ve ever witnessed.

I don't think comedians are edgy for the sake of being edgy, but I think Elph was on to something when he called it alpha. This is post-midnight rambling so maybe tomorrow I'll be like wtf was I on about but whatever: I think the reason behind American comedy being what it is (specifically not witty), is the US's competitive winner/loser mentality. The thing is, a winner is a dominant alpha, and that kind of dominance is often brute force over brains. Wit is generally a thing to resort to for beta wimps, and those aren't people to put on a stage and cheer at in American culture, at least not as much as in England for instance.

irrelevant to whether he's funny but no I don't think it's "brutal honesty", I think it's pitching a world view like anyone else

It's brutal honesty from his pov which is admittedly twisted yet internally consistent. And it speaks to certain elements of the human psyche which might be ****ed up but nonetheless are sometimes there in many of us. And he turns that into comedy to make light of it all.

You saying it takes zero wit just tells me you either have a **** sense of humor or you aren't that familiar with his work because he's notoriously sharp and fast on his feet. He's the kind of comedian other comedians respect for being able to go head to headv with just about anyone on the spot.

"He's said dumb ****..." And ???? You're only proving my point.

Patrice o'neal is hardly the face of American comedy. It seems like you are speaking in generic terms that frankly don't apply to this specific convo if you aren't familiar with the comedian in question.

He does have an alpha presence to him, that much is true. So what?

oh I definitely wasn't talking about him specifically. I thought that white people music bit was pretty sharp (or at least apt) and I'd never even heard of him before lol. And I don't mind alpha energy as long as it is funny to me.

I like Chappelle a lot but one thing I don’t like is I think he cues the audience too much about like ok this me being naughty. Just say the ****ing joke and quit trying to lead me around. He’s still funny af but not like Richard Pryor level funny. I don’t think he ever said anything as funny as “Neil Young”. That hit the spot like a mother****er.

jwb 02-06-2021 06:00 PM

Yeah I rate patrice way above chappelle

Him, norm macdonald and louis ck are probably my 3 favorites

I like pryor and carlin etc but personally I find those guys funnier

OccultHawk 02-06-2021 06:08 PM

Carlin is another one who guides the listener around too much or is too flagrant about it. He’s great but to me that’s one flaw.

The Batlord 02-06-2021 06:18 PM

Carlin doesn't make me laugh as much as some comedians but he's a far more brilliant entertainer than almost anybody. Call him a comedic orator or something.

Yeah he’s very engaging.

Can I ask you something? How the **** is Doug Stanhope still alive? Every clip you’ve posted he looks like he’s overdosing.
