Extreme Emotional Reactions from Media (Especially if You're not Prone to Them)

After all the whining I've been doing in TV thread about the Dexter series finale, I've become curious what else has elicited such emotional responses from people (e.g. from TV, movies, books, music, paintings, etc). Shedding a tear or two doesn't count. If we're talking tears, then you have to have been seriously crying. But I'm also talking about profound rage, actually triggering legitimate depressive/bi-polar cycles, even positive, life-affirming experiences. And you know, etc. All are welcome, but I'm especially interested in responses by those not usually prone to getting emotional over that kind of thing.

Nothing like last night, but when I was a kid I of course had those videos that I would watch over and over again, and one of them was The Land Before Time. Mufasa's death in The Lion King didn't have **** on Littlefoot's mother dying. That killed my every time when I was a tyke. If you can get through this scene without getting choked up even now, then you're a robot.

This one tears me apart every time

bob. 02-15-2015 01:41 PM

as i slowly transition into my forth decade.....i cry at everything.

Frownland 02-15-2015 01:43 PM

Interstellar made me cry like a little bitch.

bob. 02-15-2015 01:48 PM

tears of anger right?

Overcast 02-15-2015 01:50 PM

I find it sadder that the little girl who voiced Ducky was murdered by her father in a double murder-suicide at 10 years old.

The finale of The Walking Dead Season 1 by Telltale games had me pretty teared up. It's a game but has a lot of TV show qualities.

It had its flaws, but I still liked it quite a bit.

Spoiler for sploier:
The ending where he sees his daughter again was where it went down.

Zyrada 02-15-2015 01:56 PM

I binged the Battlestar Galactica reboot a few years ago.

It's not a show you wanna binge if you're prone to existential crises.

Yes. I knew the tears were coming too, even before they met.

On that slant, the opening of Last of Us got me and my former roommates pretty hard.

I just found this out last year. Wouldn't be able to watch that movie the same way.

oh my god yeah. one my fav movies as a kid

DeadChannel 02-15-2015 06:41 PM

iirc, Breaking Bad ****ed with me quite a bit.

Pet_Sounds 02-15-2015 07:56 PM

I have only cried during a movie twice…

One was A Muppet Christmas Carol, when Beaker gives Michael Caine his scarf. I lose it every single time I watch the movie. Don't ask me why.

The other was in Watership Down. I love the book (actually have the author's autograph), and the movie wasn't bad either. In one of rhe most emotional parts, this gorgeous song started and all of a sudden I realize, "Oh my GOD, it's Art Garfunkel."

Black Francis 02-15-2015 08:06 PM

Mufasa's death to this day still gets me.

Edward scissor hands gets me too, especially the part he accidentally cuts winona and she's reminded "oh right, he has scissors for hands" and everybody shuns him out.

Sure, he can cut ppl's lawn and make ice sculptures for them but when asks for a little love ppl get all freaked out. >_>

More recently ive been watching the anime Honey and Clover and ive already cried a few times with it. lol

Janszoon 02-18-2015 11:29 PM

I watched The Book of Life recently (the Guillermo del Toro produced, Day of the Dead themed animated movie from last year) and couldn't believe how much it got to me emotionally. I liked the movie a lot but it's rare for a movie to literally make me cry like that one did. Especially, the part when the main character meets all his ancestors—including his mother—in the underworld. Holy fucking waterfalls.

Frownland 02-18-2015 11:31 PM

Up. Right guys?

Nope. It was all downhill after they got to South America.

Mondo Bungle 02-18-2015 11:45 PM

Pretty sure there were some parts in Boyhood that did this. It's just a real ass movie

Frownland 02-18-2015 11:46 PM

The part in Boyhood where he goes off to college hit me hard.

Yeah, Patricia Arquette's last scene in Boyhood is devastating.

Urban Hat€monger ? 02-19-2015 06:22 AM

I like it when you can get emotionally invested in comedy, these two spring to mind. The final moments of Blackadder Goes Forth and the UK Office.

I suppose I should leave a Doctor Who clip, Jo Grant's leaving gets me every time. Especially as Jon Pertwee was genuinely upset she was leaving.
Katy Manning (Who played Jo Grant) tells a story where she said Jon Pertwee would give her a lift to BBC television centre on the back of his motorcycle every day. She said the following week after filming her last scenes she waited outside for him as usual and then began crying when she realised that he wasn't coming for her.
That's how close they were in real life, also the guy she's marrying in the show was her real life boyfriend at the time.

My favorite childhood film was The Land Before Time. I used to watch that movie all the time with Ah Mah. It was about a baby dinosaur named Littlefoot who had just lost his mother and was journeying through a dangerous world to find the “Great Valley”, a land of prosperity and peace. I remember the feeling of utter sadness I felt during the scene when his mother died, and the triumphant and happy emotions that swept over me when he finally discovered the Great Valley, after going through all the hardship to get there. I watched this movie so many times that just thinking about it brings the emotions back. It was a big part of my childhood.
was just reading this before so it's funny you mention this movie. the quote is from elliot rodger's "my twisted world."

that movie was also one of my favorites as a kid. it was my first dino flick. i'll be honest though it doesn't make me very sad. probably cause it's about dinosaurs

the only movie i can recall making me cry was this one

video lacks subtitles but i assume you can get the gist.

So did most ppl, the rest of the movie is crap.

The backstory is so memorable and succinctly told but the rest of the film is just a dull adventure.

God, you must be a robot. That movie is brutal.

Kids today are coddled, my favorite childhood films killed off characters left and right. Worse than Game of Thrones.

James 02-19-2015 07:26 AM

The horse sinking into the swamp of sadness in The Neverending Story anyone? I was a mess, who knew horses could be sad.

Black Francis 02-19-2015 07:36 AM

All i remember from the Never ending story is the theme song and the flying dog.

How bout shawshank redemption?

"Brook was here"

Poor old man. :(

James 02-19-2015 07:39 AM

What about tears of happiness? This makes me sound soft as ****, but the last ten minutes of When Harry Met Sally turn me into a snivelling wreck.

Wait till you get to your sixth. I can cry over a Lipton Soup commercial these days.

Spoiler for Dexter Spoiler:
Was shedding pretty badly last night during the Brian (Rudy)/Dexter scenes. Crying over a couple of deranged psychopathic serial killers? Yup.

The ending of Toy Story 3 got me pretty bad, I'm just happy my friends and I made a rule that anyone who made a joke about someone crying would have to buy the rounds for the entire night at the pub.
