Exo's Movie Recommendation Department

So a couple times a month I'm asked for movie recs because of my knowledge in film. I decided to make a thread where you can just do it here. It'll be a straight response thread, I won't be making my own recommendations on my own. Here's how you can ask for a recommendation...
  • Exo, give me a good horror movie that I haven't seen. I've seen these...
  • Exo, I really like *director*. Who else makes films like him?
  • Exo, give me a film that's like Jaws but with the intricacies of 12 Years a Slave...
  • Exo, what's good on Netflix?
  • Exo, what movie that's out in theatrers should I see?
Stuff like that. Let me help you kill two hours.

I'm big on Nicolas Winding Refn films, The Pusher Trilogy as a whole especially. Drive, Bronson, Bleeder, Only God Forgives, Valhalla Rising, I love all of them, even if sometimes the style outweighs the substance. I'd love to know of another director in a similar stylistic vein. Where does Nicolas Winding Refn get his inspiration?

Say you started this because Roxy asked for a rec.

Definitely check out Lars Von Trier. His films will emotionally shatter your soul, but they're mostly always gorgeous and layered with different themes and bizarre symbolism. Bob. could tell you a lot more about him as I think he's his favorite director but I love the guy too. As for films of his to start with, try....

Melancholia
Dogville
Anti Christ

As for other films to watch that will get you the same feel from Refn films, watch Le samouraï by Jean-Pierre Melville. Refn said he watched it every single night when he was making Drive. You might also want to try some Cassavetes films. Try The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

I'll feed your ego dear. I totally made this because your question gave me the idea.

So was Valhalla Rising by Refn. If he likes that, he'll like Anti-Christ.

Chaos Reigns.

I liked it too but that film was slow as sh*t. There was barely any dialogue. These are not negatives.

Omg yes it was slow as snot and I had to look up country borders to keep myself from fallin asleep
