Exo's Movie Recommendation Department

So a couple times a month I'm asked for movie recs because of my knowledge in film. I decided to make a thread where you can just do it here. It'll be a straight response thread, I won't be making my own recommendations on my own. Here's how you can ask for a recommendation...
  • Exo, give me a good horror movie that I haven't seen. I've seen these...
  • Exo, I really like *director*. Who else makes films like him?
  • Exo, give me a film that's like Jaws but with the intricacies of 12 Years a Slave...
  • Exo, what's good on Netflix?
  • Exo, what movie that's out in theatrers should I see?
Stuff like that. Let me help you kill two hours.

EPOCH6 06-24-2015 06:00 PM

I'm big on Nicolas Winding Refn films, The Pusher Trilogy as a whole especially. Drive, Bronson, Bleeder, Only God Forgives, Valhalla Rising, I love all of them, even if sometimes the style outweighs the substance. I'd love to know of another director in a similar stylistic vein. Where does Nicolas Winding Refn get his inspiration?

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 06:07 PM

Say you started this because Roxy asked for a rec.

Exo 06-24-2015 06:08 PM

Definitely check out Lars Von Trier. His films will emotionally shatter your soul, but they're mostly always gorgeous and layered with different themes and bizarre symbolism. Bob. could tell you a lot more about him as I think he's his favorite director but I love the guy too. As for films of his to start with, try....

Melancholia
Dogville
Anti Christ

As for other films to watch that will get you the same feel from Refn films, watch Le samouraï by Jean-Pierre Melville. Refn said he watched it every single night when he was making Drive. You might also want to try some Cassavetes films. Try The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.

I'll feed your ego dear. I totally made this because your question gave me the idea.

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 06:10 PM

This man is mod material.;)

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 06:11 PM

Dude Anti Christ was slow.

So was Valhalla Rising by Refn. If he likes that, he'll like Anti-Christ.

Chaos Reigns.

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 06:17 PM

Listen Valhalla Rising ending was good Imo.

Exo 06-24-2015 06:21 PM

I liked it too but that film was slow as sh*t. There was barely any dialogue. These are not negatives.

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 06:25 PM

Omg yes it was slow as snot and I had to look up country borders to keep myself from fallin asleep

Stunningly beautiful film that way too many people dislike. Kirsten's finest hour by a wide margin.

Machine 06-24-2015 07:52 PM

Can you give me some recs for something like Eraserhead or just Lynch-like in general. What I mean is the sort of atmosphere that movie creates.

Frownland 06-24-2015 08:43 PM

How the **** do you not like Melancholia? Very powerful film.

I'm looking for a dark comedy or five, preferably on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Bug
Under The Skin
Requiem For a Dream
Dark City
El Topo
The Holy Mountain
Santa Sangre
Suspiria
Holy Motors
Enemy

That should keep you occupied. :)

Have you seen Meet the Feebles?

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 09:21 PM

Susperia. Masterpiece
Aresnic and Old Lace a classic
Dark City cant stay awake past , sleep now..I have a feeling its a great film
In Burges. I enjoyed as well.

bob. 06-24-2015 09:26 PM

yes Lars von Trier is not only my favorite director but one of my favorite humans on earth

personally i suggest staring with Breaking Waves and Dancer in the Dark before entering his depression trilogy....and at that you should watch them in order

Anti-Christ (not boring at all!).....:)
Melancholia (number 2 favorite movie of all time)
Nymphomaniac 1-2 (this was a grower for me....but has moved up in ranks.....i suggest the unrated version if anything for the striking self abortion scene)

when i first watched Dogville by the end of the film every hair on my body was at attention.....

his films beat you....in the way you want someone to beat you

my question......

why the fuck is it taking so long for The Lobster to come out? :(

also tell Crispen Hellion Glover to hurry the fuck up with the third installment of the "IT" trilogy!

Exo 06-24-2015 09:31 PM

Dude, Dancer in the Dark shouldn't be viewed if you want to ease into anything. That sh*t killed me for weeks.

As for The Lobster, Cannes was only a few weeks ago so I'm going to guess it's in the process of getting picked up and distributed. It had rave reviews. Only a matter of time. I can't wait to see it. I should watch Dogtooth again. That film fascinated me.

bob. 06-24-2015 09:31 PM

Frownland....have you heard of a director named Todd Solondz?

Exo 06-24-2015 09:32 PM

I was going to suggest Happiness but I figured he'd seen it. It's also not on Netflix.

i'm watching Dogtooth right now :)

yeah i just read that The Lobster is slated for a minimal October release.....looks like i may need to take a trip to San Fran or LA :)

bob. 06-24-2015 09:54 PM

i think Dancer in the Dark is a perfect intro to von Tier :( :( :( :( :(

Exo 06-24-2015 10:04 PM

I'd start with Dogville. Maybe it's my love for Bjork, but that film just destroyed me. I saw it first and it took me a full year to get myself to watch another Von Trier film.

RoxyRollah 06-24-2015 10:10 PM

Omg Happiness! Hehehehe.

Edit: That's why your sh*it and I'm champagne.;)

RoxyRollah 06-25-2015 03:43 PM

Housebound is still on Netflix. There's also Heathers, Natural Born Killers, and a bunch more if you want me to go on. I think the show Snuff Box was just taken off of instant watch, but it was a real mind fuck while it lasted (although it got pretty repetitive as it went on).

Have you seen Bad Boy Bubby?
It's an amazing movie with lots of humour (later on), but it's also very, very dark, and the first half hour or so is just sick.

This is actually a great recommendation.

Another film that came to mind just now is Schizopolis. It's probably too dadaistic to be really dark, but I'd still label it as a black comedy of sorts.

I would too. It's one of my favorite Soderbergh films. Bizarre and hilarious.

Frownland 07-19-2015 01:55 PM

Funny, preferably shorter films that I can find on YouTube? Doesn't have to be a full length movie. This ones for my sister, she's stuck at the airport on an 8 hour delay and I'm trying to send her some entertainment.

Exo 07-19-2015 02:14 PM

Funny short films are out of my recommendation engine but I will research some for you. Check back.

Kung Fury
Rejected
Six Shooter
Spider

Not sure of the availability on YT but it's a start.

Thanks. It could also just be any video on YouTube, doesn't necessarily have to have the film element.
