The Box Office Thread

[Two Spirit]

I figured I would start a thread dedicated to showcasing the movies that are in the top ten each week in North America for the domestic box office, which I picked over the worldwide gross because domestic is much easier to track and is also more publicized when talking about box office gross.

For this thread, the first set of numbers are the current weekend gross, and the film's total is in bold.

I'll also add some commentary to each film's performance.


Weekend of August 14-16, 2015


1. Straight Outta Compton - $56,100,000 - $56,100,000 - 1st Weekend

I can't say I'm surprised by this performance, simply because the marketing campaign was everywhere for this flick. I didn't think the general public knew or cared that much about N.W.A, but now they clearly do.

2. Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation - $17,000,000 - $138,137,000 - 3rd Weekend

It's amazing to me how this franchise has managed to stay fresh after all these years, as well as keeping Tom Cruise's career afloat for the time being.

3. The Man From U.N.C.L.E - $13,535,000 - $13,535,000 - 1st Weekend

I haven't followed this movie at all, so I can't really comment. However, I have heard a bunch of ads for it, so $13 million doesn't sound too good considering the marketing campaign for it.

4. Fantastic Four - $8,000,000 - $41,961,000 - 2nd Weekend

This film deserves all the **** that's getting flung at it, not to mention only grossing $40 million after ten days of release. Even Ant Man managed to outgross that in it's first weekend. Of course that was an actual film that was good, but the comparison is still interesting, nonetheless.

5. The Gift - $6,500,000 - 23,577,000 - 2nd Weekend

Haven't really followed this one, either, but it's looks like a standard family flick judging by how my mom has talked about it. Nevertheless, a decent performance thus far.

6. Ant-Man - $5,517,000 - $157,568,000 - 5th Weekend

This is pulling Thor numbers for the most part, which was to be expected. There's no way this was going to do Iron Man or even Captain America 2 numbers. Between $150 and $200 million final gross for this is really good, given the niche audience for this particular superhero. In fact, it shows how strong Marvel's brand is at this point that they can essentially sell any superhero in their arsenal on the bigscreen and guarantee at least a $150-ish million gross.

7. Vacation - $5,330,000 - $46,852,000 - 3rd Weekend

No clue what this is about, but I guess these numbers are decent.

8. Minions - $5,200,000 - $312,969,000 - 6th Weekend

Very impressive numbers for what is essentially a spin off. But then again, the kids dragging their parents to see this probably don't even care, because it's Minions.

9. Ricki and the Flash - $4,570,000 - $14,656,000 - 2nd Weekend

No clue what this is, either, so I can't really comment on it's numbers.

10. Trainwreck - $3,800,000 - $97,919,000 - 5th Weekend

Very good numbers for a comedy that had a slow start but now is about to hit the nine digits.
