I don't really know what "Dune" is, but I find Villeneuve filming it in his UQAM jacket oddly endearing and might be tempted to go see it

I wasn't very impressed with any of his previous films so I'll hold my breath about that one but should be at least fun and/or impressive to see on the big screen, if nothing else.

How many of his previous films have you seen? I thought Prisoners and Arrival were pretty universally lauded. I can see how Enemy and Incendies can rub the wrong way. Bladerunner 2049 depends on how much you like Bladerunner, I guess.

adidasss 10-26-2021 08:49 PM

Oh sorry, I forgot about Incendies, that one I liked. I saw Arrival, Sicario and Blade Runner and was ok with all of them but they also had zero emotional impact and I promptly forgot about them. Blade Runner I considered especially derivative, considering the original, but yeah, that's one of my favorites of all time.

He seems like a competent but not particularly original filmmaker.

Exo 10-26-2021 08:54 PM

Man, I thought Arrival emotionally hit like a bag of bricks.

Sicario had one of the more tense action set pieces in recent memory for me with the Juarez extraction. I wasn't super into the last third of the film, however.

Bladerunner is a take it or leave it for me.

You should check out Prisoners and Enemy.

jadis 10-27-2021 05:18 AM

I've seen everything up to Enemy and none of his later ones.

Maelström has some cute stuff, although I don't think it works as a whole. Polytechnique is really well executed, some very good choices in dealing with Montreal's most painful moment (the massacre of young women by an avant la lettre incel in 1989). Prisoners is a 90s thriller and thanks god for that, I love 90s thrillers. Enemy is very engrossing, couldn't take my eyes off, my favorite of the bunch.

After that I had a busy few years and none of the films felt like something I particularly wanted to see. Overall I probably agree with Adi, a highly competent filmmaker, a very smart guy, but overall not someone with a singular voice and vision.

But let's see what this Dune thing is all about.

Frownland 10-27-2021 09:29 AM

Arrival's phenomenal but that's more because of the story it's based on than because of Villeneuve imo. I like him but think he'd be better off taking more risks since the blockbuster aspects of his movies always ends up cheapening them. Christopher Nolan is one of the only directors I've seen straddle that line successfully.

The new Dune has cool epic scenery but each scene seems to be competing on which one can make me care less about what's going on. I bailed after an hour. To be fair I had about the same experience with the first book.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Arrival. Saw that in theaters not expecting a whole lot - went with my then girlfriend, now wife. She thought it was okay but I thought it was perhaps the best alien movie I'd ever seen. Very great movie.

Disney Pixar has a new movie on the horizon called 'Lightyear'. Based on Buzz Lightyear of Toy Story, but the animation style is completely different. They've gone for more of an 'Incredibles' style. From what I gather, it's supposed to be the movie in the Toy Story universe that Buzz is based on...or something. But yeah, an interesting concept - and they've got Chris Evans voicing Buzz instead of Tim Allen. I kinda like that decision, it helps differentiate this and the rest of the Toy Story movies.
