Movie Hype and News

Talk about hype you have for movies.

First on my list, for all you gamers out there...

Apparently, Don Bluth, director of American Tail, The Land Before Time, The Secret of NIMH, Titan A.E., and Anastasia also created Dragon's Lair. He launched an Indiegogo campaign to get funding for the movie. He just got it, and now he;s making a Dragon's Lair movie.

Also, Alien Covenant. This is a reboot of Alien (after Aliens), which means Alien 3 could become non-canon.

And finally, Screenrant has an article on Nolan possibly helping out with a live-action version of Akira, likely a trilogy.

Christopher Nolan Akira Trilogy in the Works at Warner Bros.?

I'm so freakin' hyped right now.

Love Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

But you're really trying way too hard to work your movie **** into new threads.

JGuy Grungeman 02-08-2016 12:05 AM

No, I'm not. I'm just bored. If I were working too hard, that last post wouldn't have been the first post here in months.

JGuy Grungeman 02-20-2016 04:08 PM

Death Note is high on my priority list. I love the anime, and I'm eager to see how this goes. I tried watching the original Japanese live-action film. Although it was good, I couldn't finish it because it felt a little like a summer blockbuster and it just wasn't as realistic or gripping.

However, I hear that Nat Wolff is a choice for playing Light... and as a man who's witnessed The Naked Brothers Band, I must say this travesty must NOT happen unless Nat is actually a really good actor and we don't know it. Appearance wise, I guess he could play him. But Death Note deserves better acting, and I'm hoping this isn't some summer or holiday blockbuster. This is a psychological thriller we're dealing with.

To be fair, movies are similar to music in that they are a form of media entertainment.

JGuy... I'm surprised that you haven't mentioned the upcoming "WarCraft" movie... And you call yourself a gamer ;) My favorite "Viking" is the lead  Stoked!!

JGuy Grungeman 02-20-2016 10:47 PM

Too poor for an account on World of Warcraft. But I'd likely get one if I hadthe money to spend.

But I am looking forward to it. I'm really curious as to how it will turn out.

I've never played the game and wasn't impressed much by the movie trailer I saw, but the fact that it's directed by Duncan Jones makes me kind of curious about it. I loved Moon.

And Source Code. I'm now similarly interested.

I haven't seen either movie. But given his success, I can only guess that the movie will be legit good. This movie and possibly Ratchet and Clank (which looks legit good) and hopefully Assassin's Creed with Michael Fassbender will usher in a new era of movies based on video games... and I mean an era of good movies.

Are there any examples of good films based off of videogames already out? The only thing that comes to mind is eXistenz, and that's about a fictional videogame, so that doesn't count.

JGuy Grungeman 02-21-2016 02:45 PM

Well, I liked Prince of Persia. But the common thing is that movies based on video games generally tend to suck in the eyes of critics. Highest rated one is Prince of Persia, with 35% on RT, unless you count Final Fantasy the Spirits Within which isn't based on any game but is something a bit different (44% on RT). I hope that changes.

Why do you hope that changes?

grindy 02-21-2016 02:50 PM

I also hope it'll change and we get some good video game movies.
There are some cool game worlds I'd like to see explored in a non-****ty way.

Aren't they already explored in a non-shitty way in their respective video games though? I feel like a movie of a game with a cool world is always going to suffer from the fact that you won't get that experience of exploring the world that you do in the game.

Well people tend to get different things from different types of media, so that's not the fairest way to judge a film (even though you have to compare the two on some level).

I'm not much of a gamer, but I am a huge movie buff, so for me personally a good adaptation would be more interesting than the game it's based on.

I've never played the game, but the movie is fun in a very cartoonish way. I could imagine an anime fan like you really enjoying it.

I'm not much of a gamer either and like you I'm a huge movie buff. So I'd rather see more movies based on original concepts rather than a bunch of adaptations of video games.

That's a given.
But why not both?
Would still love to see a good Half-Life or Dead Space movie.

Meh. I don't know anything about Half-Life, but Dead Space always looked like a game that was very heavily influenced by the movies so I doesn't seem like it would be bringing anything new to the table.

I have to admit I know almost nothing about the plot of Dead Space and never played it myself, but I've spent a lot of time watching a friend play and while a movie wouldn't be groundbreaking in any way, the monsters and atmosphere are cool and would be enjoyable if done right.

Are we talking about Batman v Superman? Cause it'll take more than 30 minutes of extra footage to save that pile of camel poo.

Have been so out of the Star Wars loop that I didn't even know this was coming out, but apparently it's due this December.

After being disappointed with The Force Awakens, I'm kind of dubious, but this movie looks like it won't have as much of the baggage of trying to copy the old films just to pacify the fans, and honestly looks like an entirely different kind of Star Wars movie than anything that's been made up to this point. Obviously they're still trying to draw people in with nods to the original trilogy, but I like the idea of fleshing out the Star Wars universe without having to commit to some grand vision that will be forced to live up to the original trilogy.

And as tactically unsound as AT-AT's are, that last bit kinda gave me a boner. Too bad that Forrest Whitaker sounds awful.

The Batlord 04-11-2016 12:15 PM

Oh, and to any REAL Star Wars nerd, you must be asking yourself, is "Rogue One" a reference to Rogue Squadron, or are they just using the name to attract the nerds without actually delivering on their obvious hint? Not that it would make sense for Rogue Squadron to be a part of this movie, since, I believe, they were only formed after the Battle of Yavin (aka the destruction of the first Death Star), but since they've already dispensed with all non-movie canon, then whatevs, I guess.

But if this is a Rogue Squadron thing, then the Rebel guy they kept showing but not actually naming in any way with the two green dots on his uniform... WAS PROBABLY WEDGE ****ING ANTILLES!!!

JGuy Grungeman 04-13-2016 09:51 AM

Although I liked Man of Steel because it gave Superman limits to break, the trailers for the DC Universe seem to predict the quality of each film. I knew upon the trailers what their RT scores would be. Having said that, Suicide Squad looks legit good. I predict it's lowest would be 45, highest would be 70's.

The Batlord 04-13-2016 10:28 AM

Oh look. Another Suicide Squad trailer.

*masturbates*

So far I'm pretty unexcited about this movie. I'm willing to change my mind if presented with convincing evidence though.

Black Francis 04-14-2016 06:00 AM

im hyped about the Battle Angel alita movie and Dr strange and that's about it.

It would make for a good movie but you know what other game ppl thought would make a good movie? Resident Evil.

JGuy Grungeman 04-14-2016 09:16 AM

It would. The problem was Paul W.S. Anderson.

**** you both. The Resident Evil movies are top shelf so-bad-it's-good.

Liking movies for that reason is a very hipster thing to do.

Hipsters are just bandwagon jumpers. I was doing it before it was cool.
