Video Games You Can Happily Play Repeatedly

I know there are several people at this forum that like to discuss the games that you can play over and over and over again and never get tired of them. I'm curious to know what games those are. I'll start this off with some games that I have put several playthroughs into. I would like the focus on this thread to be specifically video games that have a campaign or a story. Not roguelike style games that have obvious repetitive gameplay value:

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2: These two games have probably been the top two games that I have played repeatedly over the course of several years, and I never find myself getting tired of them or bored because there are so many different ways you can play them. If I were to put a total amount of hours logged into both games combined, I'd say it's reaching toward the 300 or 400 hour mark, maybe even more. There's something so beautifully captivating about these two games specifically that have pulled me back in every single time. The stories and the dialogue are two big reasons for that. Plus the freedom of choice which these style of games have done very well. Games like Mass Effect and the like also fall into these categories, but I've not actually played any Mass Effect game for an extended period of time to give a proper opinion on it.

The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker: Yes, this includes the original and the HD remake. I've played through this game at LEAST 3 times and each time, I have enjoyed the hell out of it. Before Breath of the Wild came out, Wind Waker was my absolute favorite Zelda game, and it still holds up to this day. The feeling of adventure is done so well in this game that's before Breath of the Wild, it was insurmountable.

Banjo Kazooie / Banjo Tooie: It's hard to choose between the two because I've probably put hundreds of hours into both of these games simultaneously, so I'm putting both on here for that reason alone. The Banjo Kazooie series is perhaps one of the best examples of a 3D platformer done right. And it's extremely unfortunate that we never received a proper third sequence in the series. I've heard mixed things about Yookah Laylee but I haven't played it for myself. But, if there were ever a reboot of the Banjo Kazooie / Banjo Tooie franchise, I'd be all over it.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords—I've beaten this game like eight times in the course of a decade. I keep coming back to this one because of the world-building, characters, and plot. Kreia is my favorite character ever in a video game, mostly due to her outstanding voice actor. Much better compared to the original—and it was never finished!

Resident Evil 4—My favorite combat ever in a video game. Much slower and more defensive-oriented than other action games thanks to the inventory management system and controls. The story is generic, and the dialogue is crap, but the combat is awesome. As soon as I beat this game, I want to play it again.

Key 06-19-2017 11:48 AM

^Agreed on Kreia. Especially if you get her influence high enough to start telling you about her past and your role in her world. It's all really well done.

Dude. Yes. Though that doesn't necessarily fall into the category that I spoke of. I'm talking more about story based games or campaign based games that you can play over and over and never get tired of.

Frownland 06-19-2017 12:05 PM

I find the tale of two sides battling for posts to be inspiring every time.

off the top of my head, front mission 3, jade cocoon, and metal gear solid are some of the only games i can remember doing multiple playthroughs for and would playthrough again. parappa the rapper, too, if that counts

djchameleon 06-21-2017 05:01 AM

None.

I am not playing a game over again to go through the same story well not anymore. I did it with GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas but no way.

I don't get people that play the same game to go through the same story over and over again. I understand games that are naturally replayable with multiplayer or doesn't have a story to go through.

bulbasaur 06-21-2017 05:33 AM

i really only played through metal gear solid so many times because i bought a cheat code book with a fake code about how you could play as the cyborg ninja if you unlocked all of the post-game items. i thought i was doing it wrong, so i kept trying

MicShazam 06-21-2017 09:24 AM

The DOS game Stunts.
http://www.ibiblio.org/GameBytes/iss...sc/stunts1.gif
I've played it between 1 and 10 times every single year since 1996.
Better yet, I've still got all (or most) of my old track designs from back then and I've been adding new ones over the years. If anyone else in here plays the game, I can totally put my race tracks up for download :D

The Batlord 06-21-2017 09:49 AM

WTF am I even looking at?

Or in other words: "I wanna be different because I'm djchameleon and I don't understand why people like fun so I sell the act that I'm different even though I'm the same as everyone else."

Drop the act, man. It was stale back in 2012 and it's stale now.

Are Ki and DJ enemies or something, or is Ki just deciding to flip out for no reason and then claim to have been joking?

Who needs textures when you've got flat colours and about 15 polygons combined?

I dunno, DJ's response really is the equivalent of a teaching asking their students if they knew the answer to question and you raising your hand just to say "I don't know".

Dylstew 06-21-2017 05:28 PM

All Donkey kong country games

My response was more of an extension to find out why people like playing games with the same story over and over again.

His reaction was just whiny as usual because he feels like I was ****tin on his whole thread instead of answering my question.

Let me ask you another question then: Do you only listen to an album once? Do you only watch a movie once? Same concept here. And don't give me your typical "i'm trying to be different" bs like you always do. I'm asking a legitimate question.

djchameleon 06-22-2017 08:11 AM

Music and movies don't have the same interactive element to it.

Games are different to me. I don't get satisfaction out of going through the same story multiple times. If you read my previous post you would have seen the three games that I did mention but I don't do that anymore.

You can't handle me having a different opinion than yourself. Deal with it.

Key 06-22-2017 08:28 AM

I can handle you having a different opinion if it were based on realistic standards. You're just flat out wrong.

So...music and movies don't have the same interactive element yet they are more prone to repeated watches/listens over video games? That doesn't make any sense.

djchameleon 06-22-2017 08:39 AM

It makes perfect sense to me.

Games are a different medium.

Ol’ Qwerty Bastard 06-22-2017 09:41 AM

i totally get where dj is coming from. i like video games to be a challenge, after ive beat them a big part of the challenge is done. i also dont finish many games becausd i have the attention span of a bread loaf.

Key 06-22-2017 09:56 AM

I guess we come from different places then. No hard feelings deej. I'm just shocked that youre confused by the concept of replayabiliy when music and movies fall into the same category. Especially if a game is really good atmospherically and story wise. There's something to be said about a game that can pull you in through various playthroughs. Besides, it's practically impossible to see everything a game has to offer with just one playthrough. I use the KOTOR games as an example again because each time I've played them, it's a different experience. Maybe that makes me the minority.

The Batlord 06-22-2017 10:25 AM

Music and movies only last from 1-3 hours in general and don't require you to do anything to enjoy them, whereas a video game can last well over 100 hours and aside from cut scenes you pretty much have to carry the story by yourself.

Any game with cut scenes I'm def not playing what is that ****

use the advantages of the medium don't be a subpar movie

Digital Interactive fiction is not really the same as a game, and it is a different medium from a movie or novel. Cutscenes can indeed **** off in about 90% of the games I play though. **** story when the story is just an elaborate excuse plot.

bulbasaur 06-22-2017 04:51 PM

i can't see myself doing multiple playthroughs back-to-back unless there's multiple branches of story that offer enough distinction in content to make doing so not a chore, but even that's a reach. it could be fun to revisit an enjoyable game and playthrough it again years later, though. i do think it's cool that some people have the will to set out to discover and soak in everything a game could offer.

there's also achievement/trophy completionists. i guess 100% completion in that respect can be impressive at times, too, since it's a hassle for me to attain just the easiest ones

djchameleon 06-22-2017 06:13 PM

After I spend logging so many hours reading texts on rpgs or having to wait through lengthy cut scenes. I'm good. On to the next rpg after I finish one.

Oriphiel 06-22-2017 06:25 PM

I don't think I have enough cookies for all you guys.

DwnWthVwls 06-22-2017 08:03 PM

I don't play a lot of different games. I tend to stick with a couple games for a very long time... so here's my list:

Ultima Online - ~10 years
WoW - ~3 years
Hearthstone - ~4 years
Minecraft - ~5 years
LoL - ~6 years

I've always enjoyed neverending progression and collecting wealth in video games which makes MMORPGs with a solid end/late game my genre of choice. I don't get much enjoyment from games with an end or themepark style anymore. WoW is on the list just because it was enjoyable early on for me, but that pleasure has since died off (this is the first expansion I haven't even bothered to get). MOBAs are also fun if you feel like playing something on a whim that takes little to no investment to have fun and still be competitive.

I guess some titles I enjoy that are more fitting for the threads theme include:

-Mike Tysons Punch Out - Idk if it's just the nostalgia factor, or the mastering of each opponent that makes this game a pleasure to go back to.. Every month or three, I'll give it ago until one loss to see if I still got it. I never make it to tyson anymore, but I usually get to Soda.

-Final Fantasy Tactics - I love the flexibility of character paths that give me the option to play different strategies every playthrough. Hands down my favorite console RPG since I purchased it new. I've heard there are better games with similar playstyles, but I've never tried them.

-A whole bunch of civilization-esque grand strategy games such as Stellaris, Europa Universallis, etc, that provide unique playthroughs as well as survival games like Don't Starve and Oxygen Not Included.
