Akira: Yea or Nay
One of the key movies that helped to spark interest in Anime worldwide. Many people love it, and many people loathe it. What do ya'll think? Do you like it? Do you think it was a good movie, as a standalone flick and/or as an adaptation of the manga?
|
I only ever read about ½ the manga, but I still see how the movie is missing quite a bit from there. Even so, I think they did well to adapt and compress the idea into a movie and I think it is - while not the best anime movie - a very good one and a must-see for any sci-fi fan, regardless of what you think of anime.
I need to watch it again though. It's been years. Need to read the entire manga too, but I don't know know if I'll ever get around to that, tbh. |
im no weaboo but i like it. i own a copy of it, actually.
|
I think it's overrated as a lot of its notoriety comes from its gory visuals, at least in America, but it's still fantastic. I'd really like to read the manga though, as the ending definitely feels like it could be expanded on. *spoilers* Finding out that Akira is just a bunch of organs in jars was so anti-climactic and pointless.*spoilers*
The best anime movies will always be Studio Ghibli films. |

Satoshi Kon movies for the win. Only problem is that he died before he could make all that many. At least he made Paprika - the ultimate anime movie. |

Akira has a great soundtrack.

I think the one Ghibli movie I really liked was Spirited Away. I've only seen a handful, though. Grave of the Fireflies was the saddest movie ever, but I don't know for sure if that was a Ghibli production. |

It's so nice though. All in all a very bright movie and by the end I felt like my life metamorphosed then there's still a lot of "scary" suspense and imagery which is outrageously captivating and chilling. But I have a loose definition of scary |
Speaking of good, weird anime, "Welcome to the NHK" is one of the better, more surprising anime series of all I've ever seen. It's nothing like you think it's going to be. Weird, funny, clever, dramatically poignant. Love it.
Ultra short synopsis: The main character is a recluse who never leaves his apartment, who agrees to work on a hentai game project with his weirdo neighbor. And he also signs a contract with a girl to come out every evening to the park and have lessons with her where she tries to teach him to be better. Plus he's paranoid and thinks an evil television network named the NHK is trying to brainwash him. One of my favorite anime. |

Has anyone seen Voices of a Distant Star? It's a short made by the director of 5 Centimeters per Second and was done all by himself before he "made it" and is the kind of DIY thing that makes you appreciate that creativity by a single person can be a magical thing even in animation.
Basically an exploration of the idea from Ender's Game of time dilation, but with high school kids and giant fighting robots cause anime. One of the most bittersweet and beautiful things I've ever seen. You need to see it basically. Only 25 minutes long... I prefer subtitles but I watched a Paprika dub that seemed good

I don't mind that much with animes, but live action? Why is that even a thing

Should also mention that, if you end up really liking Paprika, then the second best thing the same director did (imo), Paranoia Agent, is probably the closest thing you're going to get to something vaguely similar to Paprika. It's not a film, but a sort of mini-seires. A string of loosely connected short stories about a series of mysterious assaults on innocent people. Really, really good and unusual stuff. |
I remember watching an episode or two of Paranoia Agent when it was on Adult Swim (late night animation feature on a dedicated cartoon channel that featured a lot of anime). Seemed nice.

The movie was great, but not as an adaptation of the manga. It had great visuals, stunning music etc.. but the manga was what, 2k pages long ? sth like that.. it was as faithful as an adaptation as the latest Ghost in the Shell (the live one, with Scarlett J.).
Which basically means that while it was good enough to stand on its own, plotwise it took a handful of motives from the original and mixed them up a bit. I enjoyed both ;) |
the TETSUOOOOOO! one, i dont get. but then again . i dont get what akira is too
 |

Wouldn't call myself an otaku and definitely not a weeb but I used to watch anime quite a bit. Akira's animation is just jaw dropping to me still to this day
