The Quiet Man in the Corner

I'll update it regularly with pretty much anything that tickles my fancy! Whether it be electro, electro house, trance, or hardstyle.. maybe even techstyle! Which is a new fangled genre that has a few gems. Since this is my first post I'll put a few songs in to get started. I'll post either new upcoming songs, or older songs I have rediscovered.

Trance:
Alex M.O.R.P.H. feat. Ana Criado - Sunset Boulevard
Label : Vandit
Release : June 1st, 2009
Versions : Original, Paul van Dyk Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...Corfe/alex.jpg

Original : On first hearing it's a pretty decent track. In the buildup there is a spacey sort of melody I'm not too fond of. It sounds a bit outdated. The vocals are fantastic, ethereal, and fit quite nicely. Unfortunately it's not unlike anything else I've heard from Alex. His style hasn't changed much for quite a few years, but if it's not broke don't fix it! Overall I'd say around a 7/10

Paul van Dyk Remix : I'm a bigger fan of this one I will have to admit. Then again Paul is a legend who's been in the scene since the word "trance" was even used. His buildup is quite nice complete with a really nice and simple piano melody. His break is also nice and the vocals fit well, but then there is a fundamental change. Instead of the epic route that Alex has taken, Paul decides to switch it up with a hard techy edge. It is quite unexpected but has another breakdown and ends that one with the epic sound he had in the buildup. For this reason, it sounds much more dynamic than Alex's version. I give this one an 8+/10

Electro House :
Plugg'd - The Sequence E.P.
Label : Airport Route Recordings
Release : November 24th, 2008

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...rfe/pluggd.jpg

An amazing release from an extremely talented Icelandic duo. Barswin is the opening track with a really catchy bassline and techy rhythm complete with hard hitting electro melodies and rhythms. It's why I love electro.. which is also it's flaw.. nothing out of the ordinary. That being said it is still a relatively enjoyable track. Modular Fun is the next song up. In the buildup it has a sound that almost seems like it's off key but adds a certain element of catchiness and groove that makes it damn near impossible to stay still while listening to. Unfortunately it loses this and ends up fading to a rather simplistic melody that doesn't do much of anything for me. Tw@ is probably one of my favorite if not my absolute favorite out of the bunch. A song that for me, has a certain brashness that I love. It's hard hitting, techy, cheeky, and amazing. The one downside is that when I'm out in public and listening to it.. it takes me over and I start moving around and dancing without realizing it. :shycouch: R U Ready is another banging track that has an infectious melody and an epitomical electronic voice saying "are you ready". Although it does sound kinda neat at first, I feel it's a bit overused not just in the song, but in all electronic music. There's more songs.. but as you can see I'm a bit garrulous. For the whole release : 7+/10

Hardstyle :
DJ Thera - Again and Again/In Between
Label : Theracords
Release : June 24th, 2009

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...fe/djthera.jpg

Again and Again : Not exactly my cup of tea. In the buildup it has a rather childish and annoying voice saying "do it again and again".. or something or rather. The bass was of the usual aggressive nature that DJ Thera usually always has. Ever since him and Fabian Bohn broke up their Brennan & Heart duo Fabian has a rather commercial sound, whereas DJ Thera more enjoys the aggressive older sounds. I usually enjoy that kind of thing, but the bass just isn't my thing. The epic sounding break doesn't really fit either, at least in my opinion. Overall.. not a great track : 5/10

In Between : This one really caught me off guard. It has the usual aggressive guise that Thera always wears.. but brings something else to the party. A really simplistic and melodic, almost techy sound. This may even fit into the new fangled Techstyle category. The enormous bass and simple melody make the song an absolute puncher and one of my current favorites. I can't wait to get my hands on this one. Overall : 8+/10

Trance:
OceanLab - Lonely Girl
Label : Anjunabeats
Release : June 15th, 2009
Versions : Original, Gareth Emery Remix, Ronski Speed Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...lonelygirl.jpg

Original : In their usual style, Above & Beyond (Above & Beyond [producers] + Justine Suissa [vocals] = OceanLab), come with a progressive and simple style. The pop oriented vocals give the song most of its melodic quality along with a bit of piano work and subtle synths. I do think it's a fantastic song however almost all Above & Beyond songs end up being huge tunes. For this reason, I think they could do much better. Having said that it is my favorite version due to it's simplicity and it's general sound. Perfect for lounging at the beach. Overall, a pretty good song but I think they could do better : 7+/10

Gareth Emery Remix : In the buildup I got all kinds of excited, it sounds just as trance should. Melodic, atmospheric, and the fantastic vocals from Justine only make it better. The break, however, introduces a very familiar spacey trance melody that I mentioned in the review of Alex M.O.R.P.H.'s Sunset Boulevard. I hear it quite often and it just takes me out of the song completely. It just sounds horrible. Although if it's used so much then the majority of people like it. This song is one of the more popular versions so it's just a personal thing. IF that had been left out then probably an 8+/10.. but since it is, 7/10.

Ronski Speed Remix : This one offers quite a different sound to the release. Out of all three versions, Ronski goes with an aggressive tech edge. It sounds fantastic! It's a nice change from the other 2 epic progressive tunes. However the main issue is since it's quite brash, Justine's beautiful oneiric voice seems out of place. Everything else though is quite nice. A really well made remix: 8/10

Dance/House/Electro House:
R.I.O. - After the Love
Label : Tiger Records
Release : TBA
Versions : Original, PH's Elektro Remix, Ortega & Forest Remix

Original : If anything else I would say this song was strictly made for the summer. Complete with reggae singer, acoustic guitar and flamboyantly optimistic lyrics, it's damn near impossible to think of anything else. However that's the whole point of R.I.O. Their last song had steel drums, as if they couldn't shove the concept of "tropical" down your throat any further. They may not sound familiar but if you've heard of Cascada.. you know them. In essence R.I.O. is Cascada without the annoying blonde singer.. and a vast difference in sound. I digress. It's a downtempo house tune with enough optimism to make you either punch yourself in the face, or smile. That's up to you. When all is said and done, it's a pretty enjoyable song : 7/10

PH Elektro Remix : This version is most definitely my favorite out of the bunch. It starts out just as the original does, the breakdown is the same, and then it comes in with an electro bassline and melody that's reminiscent of Heiko & Maiko's Verruckte Welt. Seeing as that song is amazing, this one is too! It still has the enjoyable reggae and tropical elements but gives it more vivaciousness. It's suited up for a peak time party and wears it well. 9/10

Ortega & Forest Remix : This one just doesn't do much for me. Like the other remix, it keeps the same elements but seems to try and do the same thing as the PH Remix.. and just doesn't work out. It has an emptiness about it after each of the breaks and just overall sounds sloppy. Not my cup of tea : 5/10

I really like Trance (and associated) but I don't follow it as such. I just pick up Trance mixes along the way so my knowledge of individual artists is virtually nil however it's great to hear some names to check out and we don't get many journals dealing with electronic Dance music so kudos for that.

CanwllCorfe 06-02-2009 08:04 PM

Thanks! :D That's exactly what I was trying to do, get trance more popular.. well at least on here haha. On to another review!!

Today I will do 2 releases! Some of my all time favorites

Trance:
Robert Nickson feat. Elsa Hill - Never Again
Label : A State of Trance
Release : May 19th, 2008
Versions : Original, Nitrous Oxide Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1235585179.jpg

Original : Pure progressive. An absolute lush tune with a gorgeous melody made using a vocal sample from the amazing Elsa Hill. Her voice couldn't fit the song any better. Airy and soft yet dynamic as well. Every time I hear it, it makes me think of last summer and brings back so many good memories. The only bad thing is that it can get a bit repetitive but it's so calm and soft that you don't really notice. You're too busy being awashed by the mellifluous melodies. 9/10

Nitrous Oxide Remix : This one, luckily, is also amazing. Krzysztof Prętkiewicz didn't change the original elements. He simply sped up the tempo and made it much more powerful and epic. A perfect peak time tune that maintains it's beauty and emotion. It's hard to say which one is better simply because they are different styles. It all depends on what mood you're in! If you want progressive then the original, if you want something more energetic and then the remix. They're so similar.. and that's a VERY good thing. A gorgeous yet powerful tune : 9/10

Sundriver - Feel
Label : Red Force Recordings
Release : June 23rd, 2008
Versions : Original, Nitrous Oxide Remix, Robert Burian Remix, Underwater Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1221083455.jpg

Original : From the very beginning you can tell the song is packed with emotion. A light pad synth accompanies a relatively punchy kick and instantly entrances you.. no pun intended. As the song progresses the melody becomes more and more fervent and euphoric. Just as it reaches its max, it hushes itself back to subtlety. The song has so much dynamic and beauty, it's a classic indeed. 8+/10

Nitrous Oxide Remix : It's Krzysztof again! One of Poland's most talented producers. In his usual style it packs a lot of punch while preserving the beautiful melody and euphoria. This is my favorite out of the bunch for this reason. The original is very good but I find it a bit too simple. Every time I hear this version I get goosebumps. He uses the break as an advantage to create a huge level of euphoria. The melody in the original song shifts in the buildup but he decides to put the buildup in the break. This way you get this subtle caged melody that slowly gets louder and louder and then shifts which just makes it so unbelievably uplifting. The payoff, which rarely happens, is when the bass comes in where he adds a thick pad synth to the melody and maintains it's euphoric sense even after the buildup. Then before the second time the melody gets introduced he puts in a simple piano melody that works so well. Although I never heard a piano sound bad in a trance song. Just undoubtedly gorgeous. 9/10

Robert Burian Remix : Unfortunately Robert manages to give the song .. a rather heavy dose of cheese. The break has a really outdated sounding pad with a pretty neat payoff. However the original was euphoric and this one is just.. mediocre and maybe danceable at best. The techy melody IS very neat and all but it gets old rather quickly. The first 10 seconds you think it's catchy and pretty damn awesome.. but by the time the damn near 4 minutes that the melody plays for is over, you change your mind. 6+/10

Underwater Remix : Yet another amazing Polish Trance producer! Maybe there's so many Polish remixes on it because Sundriver himself is Polish. What a coincidence! However the label has a very interesting story.. it's ran by Redstar, a US trance producer located in Bryn Mawr Pennsylvania! Amazing isn't it? This tune was huge as well so it's surprising.. as always.. I digress. This one travels a different route from Nitrous' version. Łukasz Stankiewicz decides to keep it like the original.. a very wise choice indeed! He packs a little more punch which is always nice. He also has a big buildup like the Nitrous Remix which is another great choice indeed. The biggest flaw however is that the main melody is a bit too chopped up so it's more of a dance feel and loses the euphoria he might have gained if he'd kept it more simple. That's not as bad as it sounds though because having a good hook is never bad! Overall a pretty good song that's well produced.. but rather forgettable. 7/10

Progressive House:

Mango - Kayra
Label : Morphosis Records
Release : October 10th, 2008
Versions : Original, Solarity Remix, Dave Horne Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1225393525.jpg

Original : Алексей Голованов does it again! This amazing Russian producer has never disappointed. Always coming with smooth, uplifting, and emotional tunes. He's somewhere in between Progressive House and Neo Trance. Although this tune is amazing in it's own right, he's done better.. but I'll save that for a later review. This song is gentle, danceable, and beautiful.. unfortunately one of the remixers did just what Mango did.. but even better. 7+/10

Solarity Remix : This is that remix. He maintains all of the great things that Mango did and makes them better. The melodies are more clear and concise and help the song to be a lot more memorable. Mango's version is a bit too gentle and fades into the background. Having said that it would probably be a lot better if you're in a more progressive mood.. this one is just a tad harder. Overall, just an amazing tune : 9/10

Dave Horne Remix : This one is almost a mix of the two! It's a bit harder and techier than the original but not as loud as the Solarity Remix. It does it's own thing of course, but it's nothing drastically different. It also has this bubbly melody that goes throughout the whole thing that sounds nice at first.. but gets old pretty quickly. A good song and all, but it just sounds like a slightly different, watered down version of the Solarity Remix. Although that remix is amazing so this song is pretty damn good : 8/10

Hard Trance/Hardstyle (Classic):

A.S.Y.S. - Cheers
Label : Tracid Traxxx
Release : February 8th, 2007
Versions : Original, DJ Zany Remix, Kamui Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1171461328.jpg

Original : What a tune! A.S.Y.S. comes with another hard hitting acid/tech trance song that was a "good bye" to the label Tracid Traxxx. It's in his usual style.. although nowadays he's drastically changed his sound to progressive techno along with Patrick Scheidt (a.k.a. Patrick Plaice - half of Kamui). Although that's under his name Frank Ellrich.. but I digress. This song is dark and acidic as anything he's ever made. With an artist name of Acid Save Your Soul I guess that's something to be expected. Regardless, Frank is one hell of a producer who never fails to make something so twisted yet melodic and accessible. 8+/10

DJ Zany Remix : THIS is what hardstyle sounds like. It's another reason why I think hardstyle was at it's best in 2005-2007. It doesn't sound anything like the original but then again they're 2 different genres. The bass is so immense and punchy and powerful.. it's both euphoric and sad. Long story short, hardstyle sounds nothing like this anymore.. I won't go into detail. It's complete with short and curt melodies that fit so well with Zany's speaker breaking kicks. The break introduces a melody that's dark and simple with a hint of acid for good measure. He then adds even more power to the kick which is just such a beautiful thing. If only music like this was still being created. 9/10

Kamui Remix : I enjoyed this version so much it was until a year after I heard it that I bothered listening to the other 2 versions. The buildup just has so many melodies and hooks that you find yourself getting lost in. The break has one of the coolest entrances into the B melody that I've ever heard. Just building and building and gives way to this techy and catchy riff that works so well. Unfortunately.. like Zany.. Kamui have drastically changed their sound. They went from making tech trance and hard trance to having a guest mix on Tiesto's Clublife. I guess everything good must come to an end. 9/10

CanwllCorfe 06-14-2009 06:17 PM

Sorry I've been gone! I'm trying to keep it original and had an issue picking which song/release to review. Instead of having to review full albums, I can release single songs! So here's a random one

Trance:

Calvin Harris - I'm Not Alone (Tiësto Remix)
Label : None
Release : Beatport Exclusive May 6th, 2009

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...81_20h518i.jpg

Tiësto, don't get me wrong, is one hell of a remixer/producer/DJ.. but he is really getting too pop oriented. Not his sound but more that he keeps remixing such popular songs. I've lost count of how many he's done. You don't have to look far.. trust me. I guess there's nothing wrong with it if he's so sought after when it comes to wanting remixes done. His remix of Justin Timberlake's Lovestoned is MINT! He takes that last emotional bit and only uses that.. it's amazing. I digress. The song starts off with his usual simplistic bass and cymbal. The melody builds and whatnot but he does something with Calvin's vocals that sounds so damn awesome. He definitely made them sound electronic but not too over the top. Then the melody! He uses the same one in the original but makes it sound much more trancey and harks back to the 2001-2003 days of Rank 1. The golden days of trance as they're called. Most of them have gone electro or house.. or electro house.. maybe even dance. It's a shame but this one sounds so classic! I just had a listen to the original and uhh.. yeah I don't like it at all. It reminds me of house and disco.. then again his youtube name is "icreatedisco" so it's definitely not an accident. Check out this remix and the Deadmau5 remix is pretty good.. but a tad minimal. Overall : 7+/10

Trance:

DJ Shah feat. Inger Hansen - Don't Wake Me Up
Label : Armada Music
Release : June 23rd, 2008
Versions : Original, Dub Mix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1215020723.jpg

Original : Ahh a so called "emo trance" song! This was a short lived fad where trance producers would create songs that were a mix of alternative rock and trance with emotionally driven lyrics. Some were more rock oriented and some were more trance oriented.. this one was slightly more on the rock side. The first time I heard it I was disappointed because I thought trance was starting to turn into rock.. luckily this was all a fad. Inger's voice is pretty good but seems so opposite the sound of most trance vocalists. Jaren, Justine Suissa, Jahala, Tiff Lacey, Zoe Johnston, etc. They're all so delicate and beautiful but his isn't. I guess that also plays into the "rock" vibe. It sounds a bit outdated to me, I'm not sure why. Something about it makes me think of the late 80s.. at least the chorus. It's a pretty good song, but I listen to trance for trance! I'll listen to alternative if I want alternative. If you want a few good examples from this stint try out Nic Chagall - What you Need, Paul van Dyk - Let Go, ATB - Wrong Medication, and Ben Gold - Say the Words (the tranciest one out of the bunch). Overall.. 6/10

San Antonio Harbour Dub Mix : HERE we go! This is trance. He took out the vocals and put in a gorgeous uplifting melody. He also put in the guitar melody for just a little bit so that it's not so differentiated from the original mix. I enjoy it too, it's quite nice and calming and fits well with the euphoric and beautiful pad melody. It's uplifting and progressive and gorgeous and just what I love in a trance song! It's no wonder DJ Shah made it, with 17 aliases (5 of which he uses relatively often), he routinely makes uplifting and beautiful trance tunes. Many of which are classified as what's called "Balearic trance" from the term "Balearic beat" which is known for it's heavy beach influence. Seeing as I love the beach, I'm bound to enjoy his productions. If it sounds like something that would be interesting check out his 2CD producer album "Sunny Tales" he made under his alias "Sunlounger". 8+/10

CanwllCorfe 06-26-2009 10:14 PM

I've done a lot of epic trance.. so I'll switch it up

Progressive House:

Kid Massive - 4K (Moonbeam Remix)
Label : Avanti
Release : June 8th, 2009
Versions : Original, Kid Massive Rework, Moonbeam Remix, Homm & Popoviciu Remix, Hugo Barritt Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1244604716.jpg

They did it again! Moonbeam is one of the most talented duos in the electronic scene right now.. and maybe one of the weirdest looking. Nothing against them though I'm just putting it out there. They go by the names of Pavel Khvaleyev and Vitaliy Khvaleyev.. and yes they are brothers. This song contains a riff they have become to be kind of known for. They have experienced a recent and explosive increase in popularity from their remix of Rachael Starr's To Forever appearing on Tiesto's In Search of Sunrise 7 Asia.. containing that same riff. It's hard to explain but I can liken it to being underwater. Either that or breathing in air on a rather brisk day.. whatever you choose it's a very smooth and pulsating sound that is incredible. After this melody fades out, the song switches up with a break that introduces a techy melody that helps make the song a little more danceable and lively. After the melody fades away and the riff in the beginning gets reintroduced it's like being washed over with water after being outside on a hot day. It just goes from danceable to this soft and oneiric melody that's so beautiful and haunting. One of the better songs I've heard in some time. Check out this song and the To Forever remix to see why they've rose to popularity so quickly. 8+/10

Progressive Trance:

Robert Vadney - Black Clown (off of his album/EP Shadowlove Anthems)
Label : Perfecto Records
Release : May 26th, 2009
Songs : Intro, Tonight I Died (In Your Arms), Funeral For My Valentine, Unison Decay, Hopeless Romantic, Black Clown, Sandman

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...ic_id43788.jpg

He doesn't look like the conventional trance producer does he? Exactly! He's all about being controversial and going against the grain. This entire release is filled with a whole dark, romantic kind of feel that reminds me of HIM. Not that they're the same.. because this is unlike anything ever made. He combines really heart-wrenching classical elements such as piano and violin(esque) melodies. This song to me sums up the release best. It is complete with rather lugubrious lyrics and subtle, sad melodies. It may sound a bit downlifting but that's kind of the idea. It's a really gorgeous piece of music that captures the essence of dark, tragic, romance that I feel he's going for. I suggest you try his gorgeous track A Day In Heaven, Second Sky, and his techy remix of Mariola's Music Travel. 8+/10

Electro House:

Spencer & Hill - Cool / Heads Off
Label : Tiger Records
Release : June 1st 2009, June 22nd 2009
Versions : Cool (Original, Cool Mix) Heads Off (Original, Bastian van Shield Remix)

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...pencerhill.jpg

Cool : Well they're commercial for a reason! They can sure as hell produce a catchy, electro, grooving song that is perfect for the dance floor. They might not sound familiar but Manuel Reuter (a.k.a. Josh Hill) is one of the producers behind Cascada. Whether that's good or bad, it's pretty impressive he can go from hard dance to electro house and be popular both ways. Manuel Schleis is also in a lot of groups but produces quite a bit with Mr. Reuter. This song contains the usual vocals from a girl who's name I don't know. She has the perfect voice though, it's rather monotone but it has dynamic as well. The same lyrics get repeated over and over through the song "What you think that we think is cool" and become a melody that attaches itself to my brain and won't let go. The main melody sounds like a dizzying riff that, to me, oozes sex. Then again electro house is known for it's rather indelible sexual influence. Songs like Hey Baby by Deadmau5 & Mellefresh don't shy away from this and rather embrace it. The lyrics have nothing to do with sex, but it just has that feeling of ignorance and it just works. 9/10

Heads Off : This song is a much more fun, dancey song than Cool. "We gonna dance our heads off" are the main lyrics and are accompanied with a really light and happy subtle pad synth that reminds me of trance. Then again both Reuter & Schleis have produced in the trance scene so they know all about it and without a doubt include some influences. The main melody reminds me a lot of 90s commercial trance so it gives me a heavy dose of nostalgia which is really nice. It has that uplifting break but the melody is free of that feeling and just goes straight into a hard hitting riff. There's something about it that just seems rather choppy.. but a fantastic tune nonetheless. 8/10

CanwllCorfe 07-17-2009 10:44 PM

Sorry! I've been busy. I'll update with something amazing

Dubstep:

Burial - Untrue
Label : Hyperdub
Release : November 5th, 2007
Songs : Untitled, Archangel, Near Dark, Ghost Hardware, Endorphin, Etched Headplate, In McDonalds, Untrue, Shell Of Light, Dog Shelter, Homeless, UK

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1206722181.jpg

What an amazing.. and somewhat unusual album. Not necessarily unusual but it's unlike anything I've ever heard. After I'd bought it and listened.. I tried other Dubstep on for size but nothing else is like it. It's melodic, haunting, beautiful, progressive, and just unforgettable. After I had heard Archangel on Youtube, I knew he was something else. I bought this CD the instant I had saw it at my FYE. I've never done that.. ever. I listened to it from beginning to end and intently.. which is also something I never do. I usually pop it into the CD player and let it play while I'm doing whatever but I just layed down on my bed and listened to the whole thing. Song to song and I was just so happy I had this in my possession. I almost always end up liking a CD for a day or two.. and then never listen to it again. This was just so different and amazing and universal for however I was feeling and whenever I was listening to it. It was just a soundtrack to any and every day. I cannot wait for his next album. I don't know if he plans on making any but I know he's doing a lot of remixes. He's an amazing artist and you need to look him up

01) Untitled : Well.. it's more or less an intro but like his other music it's so obscure and just works.
02) Archangel : One of my favorites from the album.. but also one of the most accessible. This one was different, at least to me, from the rest of the songs. It made me think of a rainy night in the city.. just very dark and haunting. 9+/10
03) Near Dark : This one is really quite beautiful to me, although the lyrics seem a tad freaky "I can't take my eyes off you". 8/10
04) Ghost Hardware : One of the real beauties on the release. Superb oneiric vocals mixed with a really simple bass melody and a rather catchy drum beat. 9+/10
05) Endorphin : The first of 4 songs that don't have any percussion (excluding the intro). With vocals and pads this beautiful I think they'd ruin it anyway. 9/10
06) Etched Headplate : This one is quite good.. but may be a bit too accessible for me. It's nice and the vocals are really catchy and work too well but I enjoy his heavy doses of obscurity and this one seems too out in the open.. if you will. I quite like the violin-esque sample he adds every now and then.. and that weird deep bellowing almost demonic sounding laughter (at least what it sounds like [3:07, 3:22, 5:12]). Quite ironic since he's sampling a song called Angel. 7/10
07) In McDonald's : The second of the four mentioned earlier.. and even more beautiful. How ironic, considering the song title. It reminds me of the countless days of going there for early breakfast with my dad. It just has that really slow, bright feeling. 8+/10
08) Untrue : The title song.. and also the longest! This one may be a bit too progressive for me.. I like the vocals and the drum beat and the subtle melodies and whatnot. It just seems like it takes longer to build dynamic than the other songs.. but still fantastic nonetheless. 8/10
09) Shell of Light : Unfortunately.. ever since I heard the last minute and a half of this song I rarely listen to the first 3. The video on youtube has quite a few comments saying things like "it should be in its own song" and such.. and I completely agree. It's probably the most heartwrenching and beautiful section of any song in the whole album. "God, could you whisper in her ear that I wasn't sure we could be friends" 9+/10
10) Dog Shelter : It starts out sounding rather dark.. but changes to something a bit lighter. It probably has my favorite melody out of any other song. It just flows so nicely and just has something about it.. it's hard to explain. As is most of his music and style and sound in general 8/10
11) Homeless : Yet another ironic title for the way the song sounds. It seems like it would be sad.. at least somewhat or hopeless or something of the like. I can't quite figure out who he samples but I know it's from the song "Who's Loving You". It always sounded to me like a lot of people singing at once and sounded almost tropical or something.. I'm not quite sure why. Regardless, another amazing song. 8+/10
12) UK : This.. to me is another early morning song. It's a really simple beautiful melody mixed with subtle vocal samples. Very simple in it's construction but it just works so well 9/10
13) Raver : Unlike most of the other songs this song has a straight drum pattern of bass, snare, bass, snare, etc. I'm pretty sure there's probably a name for it but I have no clue what it is. This song.. I'm not too fond of. It just sounds too far off of the stuff that I love to hear from him. A bit too fast.. or rushed.. or something of the like. I think it is his choice of drum melody.. but oh well.. it's his music! He can do what he'd like 6+/10

I've updated all my reviews with a video from youtube.. not sure why I did it sooner haha

Epic trance :

Dubstep:

Julian Vincent feat. Cathy Burton - No End (M6 vs. Re:Locate Instrumental)
Label : Soundpiercing
Release : July 13th, 2009

What.. a.. tune. THIS is what epic trance sounds like. The vocal remix was alright.. but when I heard this version I was just numb. The break is so euphoric and is exactly what was being made back in the day.. it just doesn't get old. It just puts you on a cloud and you feel so amazing. The melody is nice and simple too so you can listen to it again and again before it gets old. I was surprised to hear this coming from M6 and Re:Locate when both of them deal with a lot of tech stuff.. and then they make one of the most uplifting songs I've heard in some time. Well.. with an exception for Aly & Fila who continue to make such beautiful stuff despite the amount of electro, house, and minimal influence you hear these days. BACK to the song.. yeah it's amazing and I love it immensely. 8+/10

Tech Trance:

Tigran Oganezov - M.A.D.A.R.P.
Label : WA-X Records
Release : July 13th, 2009
Songs : M.A.D.A.R.P., Fuzzofobia

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...04_Sleeve1.jpg

Fuzzofobia is far too minimal for my liking.. whereas M.A.D.A.R.P. is pure insanity so I shall review that song. To say the least, I had low hopes for Tigran because most of his songs have such a heavy amount of minimal and techno influence that all I get is long drawn out, basic melodies that go nowhere. Unfortunately that's where most tech trance and hard trance is going. Hard/tech trance legends Kamui, A.S.Y.S., Will Atkinson, and also A.S.Y.S. have all started to make minimal/tech house.. but back to Tigran. Some of his songs do tickle my fancy like this one! It's a dark, hard hitting, melodic and damn catchy tune. I loved it the first time I heard it and I still do. Ironically I love the very beginning where the undertone or melody that stays through most of the song gets introduced. It's SO simple yet it's just like a preview of the insanity that's to come. The calm before the storm if you will..oh how I love it. Such a sick song and perfect for either dancing to or blasting in your car 9/10

Unfortunately no one has uploaded this on youtube yet.. so it's still relatively unknown. Quick! Get it while no one knows anything about it.

For a supposed open minded forum the lack of love for Electronic music is quite frankly perplexing. Great journal. Keep it up.

I know it makes me a sad, sad panda :( But thanks for the complement! :D I'll keep it up. It is my duty as an electronic music lover haha

Now for something kinda different albeit fantastic!

Electronica:

B. Fleischmann - The Humbucking Coil
Label : Morr Music
Release : February 10th, 2006
Songs : Broken Monitors, Gain, Composure, First Times, Phones & Machines, Static Grate, From To, Aldebaran Waltz

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...uckingCoil.jpg

What an album. This really showed me something I'd never heard before. I found Gain completely on accident.. to tell you the truth I don't even remember how. When I heard it I knew I wanted it and well.. I got it! I adore it so much but I read all kinds of reviews on it and I get such different feelings than what these people describe. They say it's kind of downtempo, laid back, and whatnot. To me almost every song sounds extremely emotional and heartfelt. I don't know if it's just me.. but that's what I get. Especially from Gain and Static Grate.

01) Broken Monitors : Now this song is downtempo. I love the chilled piano and drums mixed with all the subtle melodies that make it feel so full and dynamic but accessible at the same time. Having said that, it's one of my lesser liked songs from the album.. but still enjoyable from time to time 07/10

02) Gain : The song that made me get the album in the first place! When I first saw the video on youtube it only had 6,000 views which instantly made me interested. I'm always drawn to songs with the least amount of views.. because I'm so Alt. I digress.. this song to me is far from downtempo music. It just sounds so depressing and dreary.. but I think it also may just mold to however you're feeling at the time. Fantastic song : 9/10

03) Composure : For some reason this makes me think of the airport. I wish I knew why but it does. It just has the calm feel with an underlying feeling of urgency or eagerness.. which is what I have before a flight. Not that I'm scared of flying but more that I can't wait to get wherever it is that I'm going.. usually Florida. It's a really lovely song though and it makes me think of the late afternoon when nothing is too bad or too good, you're just content. 8/10

04) First Times : This is unfortunately not my kinda thing. It's a bit monotoned and repetitive for my liking. The really loud and brash synth he uses doesn't help either. At a few points I enjoy it but from beginning to end it's just not for me. 6/10

05) Phones and Machines : Yet another gorgeous and simple song that does wonders for me. It's so simple with that weird and quirky clanging and guitar melody mixed with the piano it's just fantastic. It's one of those songs that's perfect for just playing in the background that's really devoid of any succinct emotion.. it's just music. 8+/10

06) Static Grate : To me.. this is one of the saddest songs on the whole album. It just has this really slow, dreary and rundown feeling. Just completely helpless and then it just gets sadder when he adds piano into this song as well. To me it's the soundtrack to a day or week or month that just didn't go right. It may be a tad lugubrious but when I first heard this album I was unhealthily obsessed with depressing music. Not like.. commercial emo or something but stuff like this and Xasthur and Amesoeurs and other things of that sort. I don't know why.. I still don't.. but I was. 9+/10

07) From To : This song is a bit.. I don't know. I saw the video and it just reminded me of indie music that was too indie. Just like it was trying too hard or something.. it's difficult to explain. Like it's just Electro Indie Pop with lyrics about birds.. it just seemed too familiar. 6/10

08) Aldebaran Waltz : Yet another song that at least I think sounds sad. The pauses he does sound and work so well. It reminds me of a job I came home from up in a place called Greentown. It's home to the highest point in the Poconos and every time we were there it'd be freezing and/or snowing. It was so miserable and the one time we get a day done, this is the song I listen to. It does sound sad.. but it also sounds somewhat hopeful. One of my favorite tracks from the album 8+/10

This version isn't the one off of this album but a vocal mix for his newest release "Angst is not a Weltanschauung" :

I was 'lucky' enough to discover this on my computer recently, must have downloaded it months ago without giving it a try. Ridiculously top album :thumb:

Keep up the gw. Our tastes don't match up exactly, but for the most part I am liking what I am seeing.

Yes, great review of Untrue. I had a really similar experience with the album -- it's appeal surprised me. At first listen I figured it would be something I might put on while doing other things but instead it became the thing I listened to the most for a long time. The whole way through day after day. Also, I agree about that vocal sample in Near Dark. The song is so full of love and depth but then the "I can't take my eyes off you" sample gets its pitch and speed changed so much that it ends up sounding creepy and menacing.

Thanks :D Yes that's what I was getting at. It really made me uncomfortable when I first heard it cause I was in a dark room with a lot of windows hahaa. But yeah he's such an amazing artist. I know he's considered Dubstep, but he's so much more. I really hope he has a new album in the making

^ Seconded.

How did I miss this? Although I'm more specifically into progressive house and trance, dark ambient, big beat, trip-hop and jungle than a lot of electronica, an all-encompassing thread like this has been just the kind I've been waiting for to pop up around here. Some good shouts you've given here - already given me a few names to look out for. I'll check out your corresponding mix soon too.

I love a ton of electronic, just happens that most of the stuff posted here so far doesn't appeal to me. :( I pretty much hate trance, particularly mainstream vocal trance. So there's that. And while I don't hate the rest, most of it is very rave-oriented and those days are far behind me, and some is very mainstream at that. I tend to prefer head music over body music. That’s not to say I don’t like a good beat or a dancy song once in a while, I just like it twisted, distorted, abstract, with a degree of difficulty. The hard-style isn’t for me either. I still really like house music (garage, deep, soulful, jazz, tech, disco, and even some hard house) even though I don’t listen to it much anymore, but again, the mainstream stuff does nothing for me. I also enjoy some breaks once in a while, as well as a bit of 2-step/UK Garage. But for the most part my electronic listening is centered around the many styles commonly placed under the IDM umbrella, and trip-hop.

The Plugg'd track was decent. I also liked the fuzzy bass in the R.I.O. track but dislike just about everything else about it. And again, the rest is trance and I mostly hated it even when I was into clubbing/raving and don't feel any better about it now. I may have danced to it a few times while on E but I had to have my house music to be happy.

Now as for Burial…I have to admit that the hype surrounding this album has been a deterrent. A coworker had me check out his first album a few years ago, and I thought it was decent. But overall I found it too spacey and a bit boring. That first track is basically just a build-up, and I don’t like the vocal samples. I’m not really sure about the second track, it also feels like a build up and there’s not much there. I think that was basically my impression of the first album when I heard it, it all felt like it was building up to something but never got there. I do hear a good amount of 2-step in these tracks. I find the third track more interesting than the first two, but still don’t really care for the vocal samples and it also seems a bit directionless…like it’s just coasting. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I sure as hell don’t want all songs or artists to be the same. I’m just not feeling it much.

B. Fleischmann is an artist that probably appeals to me more, but I’ve yet to check out any of his albums. I’m sampling the videos, hmm is that Lou Reed vocals on the first track? :p: Pretty decent, it definitely doesn’t offend me. I could chill to it and probably enjoy it, but it also doesn’t make me want to run out and pick it up. Second track now…oh so this is B. Fleischmann singing I guess? I always thought he was more of an instrumental artist. I’m not too big on most male vocals with electronic music, but again it doesn’t offend me or anything. I feel very neutral about it.

So please don't take any offense to my comments, I mainly just posted as a response to Jackhammer saying that there was no interest in electronic. I happen to love electronic music and it probably makes up about 50% of my listening, I just don't care for this type of electronic. ;) But I'll keep an eye on the thread to see what other stuff you end up posting, as evidenced by the B. Fleischmann post, it's not all trance.

CanwllCorfe 08-03-2009 09:03 PM

Yeah I'm a big trancehead :p: I've been getting out of it recently although I still enjoy it. I was afraid it was dying out.. but it's more or less just getting pushed aside by house and techno. Epic trance has lost it's popularity to house and things of the like, tech trance has gotten taken over and instead of using techno influence.. it's practically pure techno, and hardstyle has gone to nu style. So I've been trying to stick with the times but I'm kind of a traditionalist. I love electro and electro house which for me, has pretty much taken over my love for tech trance seeing as how it isn't what it used to be.

I'll definitely be picking out some different stuff for the next reviews to balance everything out

CanwllCorfe 08-03-2009 09:33 PM

Breaks/Progressive:

Uriel - Fieldox
Label : Morphosis Records
Release : March 9th, 2009
Versions : Original, Domased Electronica Remix, Retroid Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...1236725761.jpg

01) Original Mix : What a tune! I haven't heard from Uriel in quite some time and the last time I did he was making trance. It seems we're in a period where people aren't afraid to experiment and just kinda do their own thing. Back in the day of commercial trance everyone had their own style.. but still were pretty similar. Nowadays though Ferry Corsten has been producing electro and electro trance, Armin van Buuren has been making pop-esque vocal trance and house, Paul van Dyk has been making all kinds of stuff from house to pure trance, and Tiesto has gone way into house territory. I digress. This tune is both beautiful and energetic. It has a lot of movement and melodies and yet is progressive. I hardly ever see all 3 of those things in one song.. and it's a breath of fresh air. Thanks to this current trend of experimentation. All around a great track : 8/10

02) Domased Electronica Remix : Although it is far from the original.. it still maintains the same feeling. The main difference being that this one is progressive house.. and not breaks. Since it is, it's much more suitable for lounging and probably more accessible to most people. Now this could be good or bad depending on your views, but I'm indifferent. Since it's just as good as the original and just a different style, I say go for it! I'm quite surprised I've never heard of this artist but I'll definitely keep my ears open for his stuff. 8/10

03) Retroid Remix : A remix from the guy who owns the label! Ironically it's my least liked version out of all of them. It's like the original but the melody is just too.. energetic. The original managed to have energy but still had a general feeling of being smooth, or maybe just more dynamic. I'll stick to the other versions. 6/10

CanwllCorfe 09-05-2009 04:30 PM

This is a very rare occurence.. I have too MUCH music to review! Oh well.. I'll narrow it down to three.

Electro House:

Wolfang Gartner - Firepower
Label : Kindergarten Recordings
Release : August 18th, 2009
Versions : Original

http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y22...500x500ART.jpg

There's also a track released with this one called Latin Fever.. but it's not for me. It's minimal tech/tribal house and I just can't listen to stuff like that. It's too plain for my liking. Check it out though, you may like it. As for THIS track.. just wow. An electro house song for someone with the attention span of a hyperactive 3 year old with a rampant refusal to take ritalin. It's so fantastic. It's combining funk, electro/electro house, with maybe some disco, and even a bit of classical. When I first heard it I couldn't stay still if I tried. It's just such an intense song changing and changing and changing. From basslines that sound funk oriented to really distorted melodies out of classical music, it's just so completely different from the conventional style of club music. His last song Wolfgang's 5th Symphony was styled in the same way.. but just a lot less energetic and also way more classical influence so check that out if you like this

Progressive House:

Luigi Lusini - Imago E.P.
Label : The Clubbers
Release : July 31st, 2009
Songs : Imago, Angor, Bahamut

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...g?t=1252187676

Imago : Absolutely gorgeous, lush, and chilled. The breakdown features an amazing flute melody and then comes out of nowhere with a really smooth and persistent melody that is quite prevalent in today's progressive house. Somehow it never gets old.. it reminds me of the beach and is just such a joy to listen to. It's a great song.. however the only real thing that differentiates it from other songs is the breakdown with the flute 8/10

Angor : I wasn't sure what this meant.. so I looked it up. As it turns out it means "a great anxiety, distress, or mental anguish". Quite a depressing sounding title.. yet it's quite a gorgeous tune! It does have a different sound from Imago in that it isn't as uplifting and does have a bit more aggression. It's definitely close to progressive tech house.. although it's more progressive. The percussion doesn't come in until around 2:00 and then there's also a 2:00 breakdown. Maybe it's just meant to balance out the slight aggression so that it doesn't come off sounding too different from the other songs. Overall.. a pretty good song but not to my liking because of it's excessively progressive nature. 6/10

Bahamut : Definitely my favorite track from the entire E.P. It has that sound that I love.. it's not too energetic you can just let it play and lounge to it. Not aggressive, not loud, not fast, not slow, it's just right in the middle. It also switches everything up with a bit of guitar and in the breakdown has a very electro-esque sounding synth that has quite a bit amount of emotion. Just an all around gorgeous tune. 9/10

Trance:

George Acosta feat. Truth - Someone (Vox Mix)
Label : Fektive Records
Release : August 24th, 2009
Other Versions : Dub Mix, Alternative Mix, Adrian Ivan Remix, Nurettin Colak Remix, Nurettin Colak Dub Remix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...57-02A-BIG.jpg

The general feeling of this song reminds me of the kinda stuff Markus Schulz produces. In an interview he said "..some trance is just too uplifting. So I want it a little darker.." and this song is just like that. It has the potential to be an insanely euphoric tune but George tones that down a bit and makes it a bit more well rounded. No one wants to listen to over the top, euphoric, and hair raising music all the time. The vocals from Truth are incredible as well and really make the song amazing. George also arbitrarily puts a stutter effect on them that sounds SO amazing. (If you like it as much as I do check out I'll Never Be The Same Again from Markus Schulz and Never Again from Robert Nickson). The whole tune just has this dark feeling with an underlying sense of something impending.. or just that general sound of eagerness or anxiousness. I can't see this song ever getting old soon, it's just so gorgeous on a subdued level. From an American producer nonetheless! I guess that's not as uncommon nowadays with DJ Eco, Redstar, Filo & Peri, Breakfast, Gabriel & Dresden, and Sean Tyas (although living in Sweden) all being quite prolific in the scene. Just an all around fantastic tune. 8+/10

I'm back!

Dubstep:

Burial - Foster Care
Label : Hyperdub Records
Release : October 5th, 2009
Featured On : 5 Years of Hyperdub Compilation

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...dub-724028.jpg

Another track from Burial! It's been too long. I've been waiting for this release for quite awhile. Once again it is so amazingly smooth and downtempo with those altered vocals and haunting echo-like melodies. It's as ethereal as anything else I'd expect to come from him. It's beautiful and somehow dark like walking in a city at night time. You admire the lights and sounds but are suddenly startled by gunshots and screaming. An absolute beauty of a tune with simplicity and emotion walking you through.

Hardstyle:

Zany meets The Beholder - Do You Want Heavy?
Label : Fusion Records
Release : October 5th, 2009
Other Songs : The New God

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...uwantheavy.jpg

The New God is rather forgettable and moreover; nu, so I won't review it. Do You Want Heavy on the other hand is in your face and aggressive just as Hardstyle SHOULD be. There's no cheese or uplifting melodies just immensely hard kicks (reminiscent of Hardstyle back in 2005-2007), loud and brash melodies, and fantastically over the top lyrics. "We don't give a ****! I have an announcement to make.. we've come here tonight to KICK YOUR ASS" It's perfect for working out, fighting, or playing on a peak hour Hardstyle set. This is what Hardstyle should be and to hear a song from such a prolific producer in this day and age of nu and pitched bass is quite inspiring.

Trance:

Ron van Den Beuken feat. Nicole Tyler - Faraway (Harry's Game)
Label : RR Recordings
Release : March 2nd, 2009
Other Versions : Maarten de Jong Vocal Mix, Maarten de Jong Dub Mix, Nils van Zandt Extended Mix

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...en_faraway.jpg

Now to go from something so aggressive as Do You Want Heavy I will go to extremely beautiful and euphoric from the amazing Ron van den Beuken. This song is, in essence, a revamped version of Chicane's huge hit Saltwater. Luckily he didn't change it much he only seemed to make it MORE euphoric which is always welcome in epic trance. The original is a beautiful tune in its own respect but this is incredible as well. The gorgeous vocals and melodies together sound so full and lush it's almost like all one thing. He may have tripped up on some rather forgettable tunes but Mr. Van den Beuken makes up for it with this incredible song.

Hard Tech:

Phil York - Phil York - Love (On My Mind) [Kidd Kaos Remix]
Label : Tranzlation Records
Release : September 28th, 2009
Other Versions : Original Mix, Luca Antolini & Andrea Montorsi Remix

Kidd Kaos has to be the most exciting artist in hard tech trance today. He incorporates heavy amounts of Techno, Hard Trance, and Hardstyle into one and the result? Hard punchy kicks, reverse bass, long buildups and breaks all leading to a huge payoff. This song in it's style is similar to Nu Religion in that it has all the things you could wish for in a hard tech trance song and more. The song starts out with a vocal that has a stutter effect and hard punchy kicks that set off the vocals in such a way that it almost creates a sense of euphoria from the amount of perfection. Of course I may be overstating it because I am of course a Kidd Kaos fanboy. Then it leads into a slightly more open vocal with reverse bass. It all culminates and then vanishes into a break that introduces a melody heavy with distortion. Kaos then tricks you into thinking the bass is about to be introduced that pulls the rug out from under you. Then when the melody is introduced he adds the reverse bass and makes the whole thing like an unstoppable thing of beauty.

I hadn't heard of this. The song is fucking good - thanks.

You're welcome! :D It is indeed an incredible tune

That Burial tune seems even more stripped down from his Untrue album which is a great album. I hope his new album keeps this going and he alters his sound a little to keep things fresh. Have you heard the Burial/Four Tet 2 track split E.P? Damn fine. Takes a while to kick in but worth the wait.

Indeed! It almost reminds me of prog house tbh

It's been a long time journal, it's time to update you.

Dark Ambient:

Desiderii Marginis - The Ever Green Tree
Label : Kaosthetik Konspiration
Release : June, 2005 (LP) May, 2007 (CD)
Other Songs : Hibernation, Legends, Stalkinghorse, Hallmark, The Vale of Tears

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...orfe/green.jpg

As I slowly learn about more and more weird and obscure genres, I find that there's a "dark" version of Ambient; a genre I liked when I was younger. Trance was my forte, but I dabbled in other things as well. Desiderii Marginis is a one man band by the name of Johan Levin. His sound is, as you can imagine, quite dark and caliginous in tone. Some songs are more accessible than others, and I find this one to be pretty easy to listen to even if you aren't into ambient. The song begins with a simple piano melody put over bizarre sounds that I liken to moving around a piece of sheet metal. It has a very crisp and defined sound, like slicing instead of banging on something. It's quite mysterious and I have no clue what it is but I like that. Then out of nowhere the piano drops away and you are met with a gorgeous acoustic guitar melody bolstered by classical music. Every now and then you are still met with that bizarre sound introduced in the beginning. Out of nowhere the beauty fades and you are once again met with the very simple piano melody and odd noises. It creates a very anxious feeling as if something is about to happen; an impending event that you can't see coming. It's songs like this I thoroughly enjoy. They're not "pop" and made for thousands of people to enjoy, it's more like true art and expression. I'd say an 8+/10

Electro:

Sound of Stereo - Velcro (off of their Zipper E.P.)
Label : Lektroluv
Release : November 24th, 2009
Other Songs : Zipper, Button

http://i392.photobucket.com/albums/p...g?t=1262550936

The Belgian duo are at it again. As many know, I'm a huge fan of Electro but my tastes are quite picky. I either need something aggressive and brash like The Toxic Avenger, or something infectious and danceable that will get stuck in your head for long periods of time. This is the latter. The track has a very cheeky sounding tribal melody that sounds like it came out of an Casio CZ-101. "It's not just a synthesizer, it's a rocket launcher". In this song though, it works. I've always loved the tribal sound but never heard it in an Electro song and enjoyed it. I usually stuck to stuff like Randy Katana or something. On top of the weird melody there's also what sounds like some guy saying "WOOF" and a weird, seemingly outdated vocal sample with the cliche words you would expect in a song like this: "turn, turn turn it up". I think this would belong in this resurgence we're having with things that sound like they're outdated, but producing them in a way that you can tell they're current. I usually hate it, but with a song this catchy I can't say no. I would suggest checking out Zipper as well, but Button is not my thing.. way too minimal. Overall, an 8/10

That first dark ambient track you linked is fascinating. I can't decide if I like it or not...and I'm honestly not sure I could sit through a full album of that, but I'm gonna give it a shot I think, cause I'm kinda intrigued now. DL'ing that album as I type this.

The Sound of Stereo song was pretty cool as well. The remark about the Casio was pretty accurate I'd say too. I was waiting to see what you were talking about after reading it and then clicking the link, and I actually laughed through a few parts in the song. The whole song does just sound really ghetto, but I guess in a good way, and I think I can see its appeal. :)

Yeah dark ambient is definitely not for everyone. It's a genre of music that's good for passive listening. As in, you're not listening to the music explicitly and are doing something else at the time.

Yeah I used to hate stuff that sounded outdated but the melody is so unbelievably catchy that I can't help but love it.

I've decided I'm going to start doing all kinds of reviews and not just Electronic.. because I USED to only listen to Electronic Music. Well.. not anymore. Thanks to this site I have traveled outside of my comfort zone and now listen to all kinds of weird stuff. Well.. let's get on with it!

Shoegaze:

Alcest - Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde
Label : Prophecy Productions
Release : August 2007
Songs : Printemps Émeraude, Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde, Les Iris, Ciel Errant, Sur L'Autre Rive Je T'Attendrai, Tir Nan Og

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1.../Souvenirs.jpg

Alcest, a project from a man by the name of Niege, is quite far outside of his other work. Alcest started out as a 3 piece black metal band.. that is until Niege was exposed to Shoegaze and Post Rock. As a child he says he was drawn to "fairy land" which was the main idea behind this album. He left Aegnor and Argoth behind to do all of the guitar, drum, and vocal work by himself. With an exception to some female vocals done by Audrey Sylvain from another project he was involved in (Amesoeurs). The album is beautifully produced.. which is to be expected considering his claims are that it was composed over a 6 year period.

The album opens up with the beautiful and seemingly emotional Printemps Emeraude (Emerald Green Spring), complete with perhaps just a BIT of Black Metal influence here and there (drumming wise). You can also hear Audrey's subtle vocal work throughout the track. Souvenirs D'Un Autre Monde (Memories Of Another World) continues on the same note as the opening but maybe a bit more solemn and cold. At this point I'd like to point out how amazing Niege's vocal work is.. I don't think I could imagine any better sounding vocals to go with the music. So uplifting and oneiric yet still having some substance. Les Iris (The Iris) is on a slightly different frequency from the other two. Still beautiful and such.. but doesn't seem to have the same amount of emotion as the first two. Almost like a well done ambient track! Ciel Errant (Wandering Sky) reminds me of something you would listen to while thinking about the past. It's not as openly emotional as the first two which is a nice break. It has a simplistic feel and has this underlying feeling of hope which is so beautiful and comforting. Sur L'autre Rive Je T'attendrai (On the Other Bank I Shall Wait for You) is home to quite an interesting hypnotic feeling. It also has a bizarre aura of tension or something of the like. As if he can't wait on the bank anymore and can't wait for his love to come back! Or maybe I'm just being a romantic.. who knows. The song also features a little sample of ocean water coming ashore which is fitting when considering the title of the track. This song also features Audrey's gorgeous voice once again. The last piece Tir Nan Og has a weird drumming in it that makes me think of an Enya song. Not that that's a bad thing.. it's actually a very good thing! I would think that this could be played on one of those Pure Mood compilations that were so popular. It has such a clear and clean atmosphere with no sadness or angst.. just beauty!

i'm a huge fan of shoegaze, so your latest entry immediately caught my attention. i was even more intrigued when i read your review and how this guy came from a black metal band. i started to think about it...and who better to front a shoegaze band than someone who used to play black metal? surely, they would have a good grasp of how to evoke melody from so much dissonance and fuzz. and sure enough, they seem to have done it! very impressed...i'm going to check these guys out more!

Alcest is quite the MB fave for fans of the genre. Great album.

Really?? I had no idea! The only reason I even found them was because of Amesoeurs.. who are fantastic as well.

duga 01-24-2010 05:07 PM

so i've been playing this alcest album nonstop for the past couple of days. then i find out the new album should be out sometime this year and i get even more excited. thanks for pointing these guys out...man i'm blown away.

have you heard their first demos from when they were still a black metal band? i managed to track them down and they were a BLACK metal band. it is amazing how they changed like that.
