The Nostalgic Time Line of Paradox and Music

I have been thinking about doing this for a while now, and I think it’s time I got this journal started. I really want to write about the albums I loved since 2007. That was a critical time in my life because that is when my love for music began to grow. I never liked music too much nor paid any attention to it but two albums I heard that year changed that. A strong affection towards music began to grow and it grew stronger as time went on. There have been plenty of things I have heard throughout the years and I will be discussing my favorites and the memories that go along with it that bring a strong sense of nostalgia. The albums also show what musical phase I was going through at the time, or even social phase. The albums I’m posting won’t necessarily be reviews, they will more so be related to the time period I listened to it and the memories that go along with it. I will discuss the album a little though. I have a strong memory of the chronological order I heard the albums in so I can pretty much start from the beginning. It is crazy how my musical taste grew to what it is now. (Side note. Anything that has a * * in between it means it is one of my all-time favorite albums to this day.
2007

Graduation (2007)

The beginning. I remember being in 7th grade sitting in the car getting a ride from my parents to my friend’s house for a barbeque a few minutes away. I heard some of the tracks on the album during the ride but they didn’t really click with me because music was the last of my interest but I did think they were catchy. On the ride back home at night I heard one track that changed everything. I really feel in love with the song Champion for some strange reason. Maybe it was the beat or the lyrics “do you realize, that you were a champion in their eyes” that caught me. I eventually began to love the album as a whole with the standout tracks to me being Champion, Good Morning, I Wonder, Everything I Am and Glory. At this point in time a lot of things changed in my life. I went from a video game nerd in school that many people found annoying to a kid that was becoming semi popular. I got into sports and I started talking to girls (

hell yeah!). I also remember going to a lot of bar/bat mitzvahs during this time and just having a good time as a kid reaching the beginning of his teenage years.

*Ain’t a Damn Thing Changed (1991)*

Time goes on and it is December already. I have listened to plenty of other music but it was mostly just radio singles and life was really good. For Christmas I wanted an mp3 player and my family was really surprised because I never liked music, and in a few months after hearing one album I wanted an mp3 player, crazy but I’m glad I made that decision. That Christmas was fun, I got a 2gig mp3 player, an Xbox 360, Gears of War and Halo 3. After the gifts were opened I immediately put the Kanye album on my mp3 and a few other singles but my mp3 was still very empty. My dad had a suggestion. He told me to listen to this album and tell me how I liked it. He put on the Nice and Smooth album. I went in by basement and plugged my mp3 to my Xbox so it can play the music loud while I play Halo 3 Co-op with my younger brother. Right when we start playing the music comes on with the lines that bring me a huge feeling of Nostalgia. The intro of the song “I got a funky rhyme with a funky funky style” and the first lines “Petes Rickty rocket was my favorite cartoon, After marriage the honey moon, Ill be dammed gag me with a spoon, who loves Popeye Alice the Goon. ” On the track Hiphop Junkies which stood out along with the tracks, Cake and Eat it Too, Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, How to Flow, Step by Step and Harmonize. This whole entire album reminds me of Playing Halo, Gears of War, watching my brother and sister play soccer, going to Brooklyn every weekend seeing family and getting beef patties, and playing Basketball at an intermural league, losing every game because it was my first year and eating white castle afterwards. It was a fun time

2007 was a pretty important year music wise for me as well, it's when I learned to appreciate hip hop and started branching out from metal into other genres like country. Not only that there were some really good releases that year.

Common
Finding Forever (2007)

It was January right after the New Year and I went on a trip to upstate NY to see the inauguration of Elliot Spitzer, I actually met Andrew Como on the elevator in the hotel I was staying in. It was a long ride so I made a mix CD that contained 90s rap to the new era rap and everyone loved it. Whenever we would be out of the car I would plug in my headphones and bump Commons album which I loved at the time. Listening to it now brings a Nostalgic feeling of that trip to upstate NY and the end of my winter basketball season with my father and his coworker as coach and becoming an All-Star my first year. This album would also appear on my summer playlist when I got a job as a website manager for my mother. I loved this album at the time with the stick out tracks The People, Southside, Driving Me Wild, and The Game. The song Southside with Kanye had this funny line at the end that went like “Spice it up,its time to spice it up, spice it uuuuuup” in the funniest way and me and my friend kept repeating it during a fieldtrip to Manhattan one day. For the song The game, I always looked for DJ premiers verse. My knowledge in hiphop obviously lacked, years later I realized I was an idiot because Dj premier produces XD.

The Carter III (2008)

So I was still dabbling in mostly hip-hop music and I was listening to mostly the radio and hits from the 90s. I listened to a lot of Slick Rick, Gangstarr and Tribe Called Quest hits from the 90s and found one of my all-time favorite songs *”Scenario”* but I wasn’t really listening to full albums too much. Summer was coming close and I finished going on a family trip to Virginia, we went fishing and swimming and I also ran into one of my school friends there randomly. I remember during the whole trip we listened to the mix CD I talked about earlier. Summer came and I was in a basketball league, I got a little better and went into the all-star game for my winter league so I was ready to win this summer. Too bad we lost every game, my team sucked haha. But it was fun, I had lots of barbeques and listened to a lot of music. I came across this album The Carter III, and my 12 year old self swore this was the greatest album ever, I actually used to annoy people with it. I still enjoy this album (The only lil wayne album I actually enjoy) but it is far from my favorites. I loved the stand out tracks A Milli, Dr. Carter, Mrs Officer, Let The Beat Build, and Lala. This album was actually pretty creative. Too bad he fell off. Lil wayne became my favorite rapper for a couple of months and I loved to “Crank that souljah boy” XD how embarresing. I was soon introduced to something else by my friends Harris and Jacob.

It’s the beginning of the 8th grade, the beginning of one of my favorite school years, and all I was talking about was Lil Wayne, fried chicken and Barrack Obama. I got a sidekick gecko as a phone and I was finally able to keep in touch with friends and hit up those females. Life was good and I actually became one of the popular kids in school, but not like the ones who are jerks, I was friends with people from all groups, everything from Nerds to Jocks and everything in between. My friends Harris and Jacob kept telling me that Lil Wayne sucked and I told them to prove it, I thought there was no way in hell! So they gave me there ear buds and they put this song on. Once I heard “I smoke on the mic like smoking joe frazure the hell raiser raise hell with the flavor, Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan, swinging in the hood like your neighborhood spiderman!” I lost it. I thought that verse right now on Protect Ya Neck was dope. I listened to the album and I loved the songs Wu Tang Clan Aiint Nothing to F*** With, Shame on a N****, Cream, Method Man and Bring Da Rucku. I fell in love with the Wutang and soon after ODB became my favorite rapper. I loved the song *”Brooklyn Zoo”* so much and *”Shimmy Shimmy ya”*. I started to slowly abandon the mainstream rap and went into a 90s phase. R.I.P ODB

**Bone Thugs N Harmony**
**E. 1999 Eternal (1995)**

In January I was in the car with my father and we were heading to my basketball game about a half hour away, he put on the Notorious Movie soundtrack. I enjoyed it, it was classic biggie, but their was one song that I was fairly new too. It was called Notorious Thugs. I loved that song, especially the 2nd and 3rd verse. I asked my father “Who are those rappers?” he said they are “Bone Thugs N Harmony”. I asked him if he had their album, he said he had it digital. He burned the album on a CD and we listened to it the next day when we were washing his car. He forgot to change the stereo to play the songs straight through so it was all random so the first song I heard was Budsmoker Only I loved the beat and the flows on it, it became my favorite song at the time and I would add it to my reggae and hiphop playlist for when I play Saints Row 2 and Call of Duty WOW and it always brings me back to that time. Sometimes I would play the album as a whole and some standout tracks would be Crossroads, 1st of the Month, Down 71 the Getaway, Me Killa, and Mr Bill Collector. A quick fact I should bring up! Every first of the month I make my status on FB and twitter “wake up wake up wake up it’s the first of tha month; get up get up get up cash yo checks and get up!” This album is my all-time favorite album. It brings me back to the 8th grade, one of my favorite years despite the heartbreak of my first real crush (looking back on it it was hilarious) I met some new people and I became one of the most known kids in the school, I made sure everyone felt like they had a friend! This is what this album reminds me of, I love it!

Temporary Forever (2002)

Soon a few months went by and I still been listening to mostly singles. I soon started to become obsessed with Bone Thugs N Harmony, I learned all there verses on their fastest song Flow Motion(original) in an hour. Slightly before that my friend showed me another rapper who had some fast verses. He told me the guy had a song on Tony hawks Underground, and it was Imaginary Places by Busdriver, I remembered it and I loved it a lot, so I listened to his album Temporary Forever and I loved it! The songs Gun Control, New Aquarium, jazz Fingers and Idle chatter, were some of my favorites off the album, it was a fun album to listen to and I enjoyed it for some time. Reminds me of starting the 9th grade which would also become one of my favorite years. My homeroom teacher would become my all time favorite teachers; the lunchroom was fun with friends and the bus to school and back were so memorable.
