My Album/Song Of The Day

Well I'm a huge fan of music, and I find myself constantly in the depths of YouTube and Bandcamp and thus am always something new I like. So this isn't genre dependent or date, or anything like that but purely my favorite thing I've heard that day. So how it'll go is every day I'll edit this post with the next day. It should be fun, and I hope you'll all go along with it and make your own daily favorites.Anyways to the list

Day 1 - 10/12/14

Clipping: Something They Don't Know

Great great new single from experimental hip-hop outfit Clipping heard the beat and it immediately took me on a six-minute trippy odyssey of a posse cut. All in all really loved it. (Also there's a cool ODB sample in here too)

Day 2 10/13/14

Wingnut Dishwashers Union: Proudhon In Manhattan

Awesome folk-punk song by singer-songwriter Pat The Bunny he's been around for a while now and I've fairly recently gotten into his music he now fronts the band Ramshackle Glory so check them out when you have the chance they make some awesome music. Anyways Proudhon is a great song that I've found myself singing a lot to myself over the last few weeks so I decided to make it my second song of the day!

Check out the song!

Nice to see a new journal around here. I have seen a lot of your posts and you seem to be a pretty cool and smart contributing member. I just listened to that track by Clipping, and it was pretty dope. I might give the full album I try some time. But I look forward to what you post.

Elliott Smith: Clementine

Day 4 10/15/14

The Microphones: I Felt Your Shape

Today's pick is from an album of the early 2000's entitled The Glow Pt.2 by The Microphones. Honestly I'd check out the whole album, but albums are next week so for now I'll take my personal highlight I Felt Your Shape. It's a song that with its beautiful finger picked guitar chords, and lyrics that are honestly fairly haunting I Felt You Shape is a song that everyone should hear along with the rest of the album regardless of your musical tastes.

BadBadNotGood: Can't Leave The Night

Day 5 alright getting to album week number one should be fun I already have some albums picked out. Anyways today we have BBNG a Canadian jazz and instrumental hip-hoo duo who got popular by recreating many modern hip-hop songs and improvising over them. Their newest album III was the first album contain all original material. This is the first single from the album Can't Leave The Night its comprising of a simple keyboard line that chills throughout the song with an ever changing beat behind it and some cool simple bass lines in the back. Definitely check it out if you're in too this kind of stuff. Very cool track from one of my favorite bands right now

Day 6 10/18/14

Jesu: Silver

I had to miss yesterday's post and I wasn't able to be on the site all day due to school and school related things. So hear is today's. Jesu is a project created by guitarist Justin K. Broadrick in the early 2000's after the demise of his experimental metal, industrial project God flesh fell apart. Some of the very early Jesu discography had elements of this Godflesh sound and aesthetic with bone crushing drums and guitars mixed with some beautiful melody and (for the most part) clean singing the albums Heart Ache EP and Jesu LP both have these elements to them. The Silver EP is considered a turning point for the band and considered a classic in post-rock/metal. The album was filled with soring melodies very played in a very slow tempo using drone and shoegaze textures to keep things interesting throughout the short EP. Silver is the first track of Silver EP and in its six-minute length goes through two distinct sections the amazingly heavy yet beautiful verses and chorus and a section that acts as a bridge which builds up to an epic crescendo back to this original melody. The song has haunting lyrics about growing older, although it is up to interpretation.

P.S: This is yesterday's song I'll also do today's

Day 7 10/18/14

Andrew Jackson Jihad: All The Dead Kids/Unicron

So this is my second post in this journal because I missed yesterday. Also this post concludes week of songs. Starting tomorrow is week of albums and I already have a bunch picked out.

Anyways on with the overview. Andrew Jackson Jihad is a Phoenix, Arizona based folk band formed in 2003 by singer and guitarist Sean Bonette and bassist Ben Gallaty. I'm a huge fan of almost everything they've put out especially they're last two records Knife Man, and Christmas Island. All The Dead Kids/Unicron comes from the AJJ/Ghost Mice split and for me is the highlight of the entire split. Musically it sounds like 3 or 4 of there other songs (same chord progression) so nothing really special there, but lyrically is where it shines funny, biting, sad, offensive, explicit all wrapped up in a two-and-a-half minute song. Definitely worth a listen, or two, or three, or every day.

Day 8 10/19/14

Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

It is now album week, I've already got all my picks and I cannot wait to post them all. There should be some pretty interesting ones along with a few generally considered "classic" albums. I'm devoting the first half of the week to said classic albums.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot where do I even begin, it's one of those albums that within the first thirty seconds you know you're in for something different than you're normal pop or rock record, something genuinely unique. From the long winded drones that unfold as the song will progress such as I Am Trying To Break Your Heart or Poor Places, to poppy near Beatle-esque songs like Heavy Metal Drummer, Kamera, or Pot Kettle Black. It was the album that changed Wilco's career trajectory, and inner-band tensions (represented in the amazing documentary about the album I Am Trying To Break Your Heart).

All the elements came together on the album it was Tweedy's writing at his best, Jay Bennet's pop sensibility, and the addition of Kotche's unique style of drumming all blended into something that Being There and Summerteeth only hinted at in terms of ambition. An album truly deserving of the praise it has gotten.

Day 9 10/20/14

Radiohead: OK Computer

Honestly what more is there to say about this album that hasn't already been said about it. (This is going to be a fairly short entry by the way) I think almost everyone on here knows who Radiohead is and what OK Computer as and still is. All I can say is that it will probably be my favorite album forever. It was the first album I bought that went outside of metal/grunge. It truly is the catalyst for everything that I listen to today.

So if you haven't ever heard this album all the way through in my opinion you're doing yourself a musical disservice. Some might argue that the album is overhyped. But I had never heard of Radiohead before going into this album. Maybe you want like it maybe you don't like it, but its an album everyone should hear.

Day 10 10/21/14

GY!BE: Raise Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven

I have no doubt that this band really doesn't need all that much explanation , but nonetheless I will provide some. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, is a post-rock and instrumental rock band lasting from the mid-90's to the early 00's, and subsequently reformed back in 2010 and have released an album and gone on your since. They're first album the critically acclaimed F# A# ∞ mainly spread by word of mouth has since become a post-rock classic, they're next release was the EP Slow Riot For Zerø Kenada which was also critically acclaimed upon release featured many of the elements what would become the album above Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven using music instead of words to recreate misery and devastation. The music acting as the narrator and the listener forced to cope. This album led into 2000's release of Lift You Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven a masterful work of instrumental beauty and sadness. First off this is a double album made up of four tracks (one for each side) each clocking in at approximately 20 minutes in length so prepare for a long ride. Also don't go into the album expecting immediacy and I cannot stress this enough, the album is very detailed and intricate.the album is also dynamic some moments it might be louder and heavier and moments very soft and quiet (like in side three in the section named Monhiem has this dynamic contrast in an epic 13-minute build up) so don't go in expecting a normal rock or even post-rock album this is not that. However, once prepared its an album that you'll find yourself loving, and always finding new things to discover about it. An album truly worth its praise and hype that it gets. If you don't like it upon first listen (like me) I implore you to try it again, and again, and again if that's what it takes.

That's all I really have to say about the album so check it out for yourself if you haven't already. Link below!

Day 11 10/22/14

Tyler, The Creator: BASTARD

Alright I'm posting this fairly late so it might not get up until after 12 which sucks, but I've been busy with homework, still am actually, whatever.

So Tyler, The Creator is head of the California based rap collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All or OFWGKTA for short. BASTARD was the first "official" so to speak mix tape and its wonderful. Starting with the creepy, depressing, suicidal 6-minute epic Bastard with its simple piano hook and synth lead will make you sad believe me. This is followed by the near nonsence that is Seven which is backed by a jazzy electric keyboard followed by an 8-bit synth lead something you'll find on quite a few Tyler songs. Other highlights on the album include the dark story on the jazzy and psychedelic Blow, the hilarious and somewhat disturbing imagery on French!, the extremely dark and twisted Sarah, the oddly psychedelic Pigs Fly, and Parade, and the laugh out loud track with Jasper and Taco. The production on the album itself is very amateurish yet solid all the way through yes maybe one to many tracks use the same synth to create atmosphere and yes occasionally you will see flaws, but it is meant to sound that way it's to sound flawed because that is what Tyler portrays and what he actually is. He's not hiding behind anything he's equally confrontational and introspective as he is silly and offensive. Its an album that isn't afraid to hide from anything because he never expected anyone to hear it.

Day 12 10/23/14

Andrew Jackson Jihad: Knife Man

Knife Man is the type of album that doesn't squarely fit into any one genre, its the type of album that is constantly trying new things with the one thread going throughout the album is singer and guitar player Sean Bonnete's lyrics about death, rasicm, poverty, love, hate, or anything else bad and almost make fun of it to a certain degree describing these horrible situations and describing them in hilarious detail. All the songs on the album are fantastic from the 20 second intro to the epic finale. Songs like Gift Of The Magi 2: Return Of The Magi, Distance, Hate Rain On Me, Sorry Bro, and Skate Park show the full out punk rock that was coming to fruition on Can't Maintain tracks like Heartilation and We Didn't Come Here To Rock. While other tracks like American Tune, Fucc The Devil, Zombie By The Cranberries By Andrew Jackson Jihad, and People II 2: Still Peoplin' (a song worth hearing just by the name itself) retain much of the folk-punk and acoustic balladry we saw on some of their earliest releases. What we hadn't seen up to this point were tracks like Backpack, No One, Sad Songs, and Free Bird showing a strong influence in traditional and Country music. And last, but certainly not least is the closer Big Bird a track not dissimilar to White Face, Black Eyes on Can't Maintain closes off the album in a total grand finale. Now I'm going to stop talking and let you listen for yourself.

Day 13 10/24/14

Tool: Ænama

Today's album comes from famed math rock/post - metal band Tool. Starting off in 1990, Tool's first official release was the Opiate EP in 1992, it's sound was based around hard hitting instruments with a hard rock styling. This was followed up by the god, but not quite great album Undertow which contained there hit Sober, the album marked a change in direction leaving the hard rock styling behind for a slower sludgy approach creating long drones while keeping the intensity of Opiate. After Undertow Tool went on a long tour not returning with new material until the release of 1996's Ænema which farther brought out the sludgy and long winded tracks from Undertow. In fact the album as a whole is much more formed and complex than anything on Undertow. In addition to this the longer tracks no longer feel starched out with each song deserving of its length never too long or short (Pu****, Eulogy, Third Eye, and H being the longer ones, and Stinkfist, 46 and 2, and Hooker With A Penis being the shorter). Another surprise on the album are the inclusion of filler tracks, but not the bad kind, the type instead that makes what could be an album that feels way to long digestible and gives you moments of peace to really enjoy the longer ttacks. They are not only a moment of rest, but some provoke thought and are quite interesting Message To Harry Manback, Die Ear Von Satan (which is hilarious) do that for me. To this day it's still one my favorite metal releases of all time check it out when you have the chance.

Day 14 10/26/14

Sorry for skipping a day for all who are paying attention to this journal I've been extremely busy lately I haven't been able to get on this site as much as I would like. But with that this is the end of album week and moving onto best first songs on albums week.

Radiohead: Kid A

So how do follow up your biggest critical and commercial success yet proving everyone wrong about your one - hit - wonder status; by creating something completely different powering most of the people who liked your previous album not going on a major tour to promote it, release no singles for the album, and go on a 3 year hiatus after the release of OK Computer; seems obvious, right? No it doesn't and that is what makes it such a great album it's stand on being unexpected something completely different. If they would have made OK Computer part 2 it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting as the bleak cold apocalyptic setting that Kid A puts us in. But in another way it is OK Computer's sequel taking a world on the brink of chaos and insanity over the edge. Songs like Kid A, Idiotesque, Everything In It's Right Place, and Morning Bell really exemplify this. This concept of this world gone insane all the way through the album is shown at its brightest in sound. It's cold harsh electronics, minimalistic instrumentation, and dark melodies paint the picture beautifully as it could be in its horrible atmosphere. Everything feels uncomfortable and it should upon first listen it should take time to get used to that's the point. Kid A is Radiohead's true masterpiece trumping OK Computer in sound and ambition despite its shorter running time.

Day 15 10/27/14

So this week is called Best Opening Songs or first tracks, so without further ado.

Can: Paperhouse

Paperhouse is the perfect way to open Tag Mago, seriously I couldn't think of a better way for that album to kick off. Starting with explosion of delay and feedback before moving in the "song" of the song. This section features a beautiful guitar lead and a fairly laid back drum beat and bassline. Overtime this moves into the jam that goes on for a few minutes with a lot of rushed drumming frantic guitar solos and the such. After settling back down we move back into the original section but much jazzed this time, with a very laid back swing groove from the drums a cool bassline and the addition of a swing rhythm to the guitar line. A perfect way to introduce many of the themes musically on the near 80 minute journey that is Tag Mago.

Day 17

White Suns - Priest In The Laboratory

Do not go in to this unprepared, bring your brass knuckles, and your fighintin' face ready because you are going to be kicked the living **** out of, believe me. I went unprepared and I'm not exaggerating when I say that I cried not out of the beuty, or just "getting to me" I was crying because I was actually in pain. It triggered something inside of me that got all my emotions going at once, or at least all the negative ones, not to mention it was at night. It's nightmare fuel, it's painful, it's ugly, and you know what it's truly ****ING awesome. This is some of the most insane **** I've heard in my life, and I have Frownland to thank for that, truly an experience and one worth having most definitely.

Day 18

The Flaming Lips - Be My Head

Be My Head comes from the 1993 classic alt. rock album Transmissions From The Satellite Heart by none other than one of my favorite bands of all time The Flaming Lips. Be My Head makes me angry at times because to me it's a better song than She Don't Use Jelly, yet it's seems to have been a largely forgotten gem in the early Lips catalogue. Kicking off with the awesome G note bend that leads us into the main melody of the song it's nearly impossible not to start humming along. Wayne comes in singing in his oh so horrible yet wonderful way, acting as guide of sorts through the noisy psychedelic mess that is the verse melody. But once we get to the chorus everything changes, going from hard rocker to a beautiful distorted anthem I can imagine it now "Be myyy heaaddd, and I'lllll be yourssss" it's the kind of chorus that will get you up and dancing. The song consists of a very simple pop structure leading us to a glorious outro of the chorus sang about three times. Definitely a song if you are looking to get I a really good mood.

Oriphiel 12-03-2014 06:01 PM

Hey! I listened to the Flaming Lips song you put up. Not bad! Kind of Garage Rock-y, which is always great in my book. Anyway, good luck with everything, and remember that a lot of people (myself included) love reading your journals!

Machine 12-04-2014 06:18 PM

Day 19

Run The Jewels - Jeopardy

This is the opening track off of RTJ2 on of my favorite albums of the year for sure, to open things up we get Killer Mike's awesome yell of "I'm finna bang this bitch the **** out" perfect way to start an album. Not only that, but the line pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album as well, especially this one Jeopardy. Jeopardy is the kind of track that makes you want to move or at least break something when you listen to it. Lyrically it's violent, messy, and completely bragidocious, but not in a dumb version like you might hear on the radio, we're talking about very clever rhymes, lots of I'll iteration, and fairly complex metaphors you really have to dig to get. I almost wish it was a but longer, seeing as its only three minutes or so, again like the rest of the album. Now on the production we see El-p using one of his best beats on the album, we've got it all deep bass squishy synths, guitar stutters, saxophone, and a muted trumpet. Plus in Killer Mike's verse a tremoloed synth keeps coming in and at the end of each crescendo it falls out and a new part of the beat comes in ending with such a massive drum sound that you can't help, but start to bang your head to the slow thundering beat. Check this song out if your in the mood for some absolutely banging awesome hardcore rap.

Day 20

PINK GUY - Anal Beads

So this song I can't really explain all that well besides that it's a very pretty song played on a ukulele with a bunch a beautiful vocal harmonies. It's about getting anal beads getting shoved up your ass too hard and thus start bleeding intensely. Anyone who knows who PINK GUY is should know TVFilthyFrank and his brand of comedy. If you don't I suggest watching a few of his videos to see if his brand of ultra low budget crude offensive humor is your style.

Stereolab - Ping Pong

I'm not doing a description for this one I just wrote my weekly review I'm just about worn out. Anyways this is an awesome song so listen to it!

Machine 12-07-2014 04:53 PM

Day 22

Shellac - House Of Garbage

Shellac is one of famed producer Steve Albini's many side projects. Shellac is known for its minimalistic sound and repetitive nature some even calling them anti-music. House Of Garbage comes from their second album Terraform, and comes near the end of the album. It's sludgy, dirty, grimy bassline creates an atmosphere dark and disturbing that fits the odd narrative near perfectly. The only real change in the song are the numerous guitar bursts and the punkish chourus. A really oddball track and one totally deserving the 8 minute run time.

Machine 12-08-2014 06:06 PM

Day 23

Elliott Smith - Either/Or

So I was going to choose a song from this today to share with everyone, but listening to it multiple times made me realize, there is not a bad song on this album. No really at first glance there are clear highlights, but digging down a little deeper revealed that every song has a certain magic to it that Elliott brings into nearly all of his songs on every album, this is just my personal favorite. Songs like The Ballad Of Big Nothing with that very uplifting chorus of "You can do what you want to, whenever you want to" always get me singing and the album is filled with these very uplifting moments, even when the song itself might be depressing or sad, which happens often on this album. Either/Or do sent really have the lush orchestrations of his later albums like Figure 8, but it encapsulated him Mr. Smith in all of his beautiful fractured songwriting that didn't need the strings and extra instrumentation to get across what it needed.

Day 24

Opeth - Heritage

Ah Opeth one of my first bands in a foray into more extreme metal and along the way got sidetracked and my favorite album by them ended up being Heritage. Today I'm not talking about the full album, but rather the short piano intro that starts off the album. It's a beautifully played piece that mixes classical, gothic, and jazz into one. The main melody is something I could listen to a million times over, and the slight improvisation of the melody is something that really drew me in. He even throws in some slight changes to the melody to give it more of a jazzy flair to it. Anyways its one of the first songs that I learned on piano trying to learn jazz on it (I've now added a few Tyler beats that are surprisingly easy to improv over, and Christmas Time Is Here to that repitóire). The song just means a lot to me and I don't know why I haven't shared it earlier.

Pet_Sounds 12-09-2014 09:18 PM

That intro is pretty cool. Glad you've started this again! :thumb:

Day 25

Death Grips - Inanimate Sensation

So for all who haven't heard yet Death Grips released a new single. Yeah so we're finally getting Jenny Death he second part of The Powers That B with this year's Niggas On The Moon being the first part. So stylistically this release feels like a mixture of everything that they have released in the past mixing sounds nearing the intensity of Exmilitary yet the glitch factor of Govt Plates and NOTM. Lyrically it works like the fractured spastic lyricism from The Money Store and No Love Deep Web. And by God it makes one hell of a track. I'm mean it's noisy chaotic, we have MC Ride screaming again, getting live drums from Zach Hill and ooo it makes me shiver. It's honestly the most immediate I have ever gotten this into something from Death Grips, and while maybe not for everyone, it's definitely worth a listen.

Frownland 12-10-2014 08:19 PM

It'd be a great track, if not for that ****ing vocal reprise. It sounds like what someone would make if they were trying to make fun of Death Grips.

Day 26

System Of A Down - Mind

So yes they are included in the nü-metal scene, and yes they play into some of those clichés. Do I care? Nope... SOAD is the very popular 90's and early 00 's alt. metal, expiremental rock, outfit featuring Serj Tankian (vocals), Daron Malikian ( guitar, whiny vocals), Shavo (bass) , and John Doloman (drums). Now my favorite of theirs is the s/t debut which captures them at their most raw and most creative, and a song like Mind perfectly captures this. Starting with the very creepy/unsettling bassline before guitars and drums pop in with a near Latin jazz style to them which is awesome. And whispered vocals really bring out this unsettling tone. After it all fades away and you think the song is over everything moves into overdrive. Serj is screaming "GO AWAY!!!" over a speedy riff, this moves into the sludge paced riff that moves into the verse. After a few more twists and turns the next part worth mentioning is the very end or what I like to call Act III of the song. It all ends with another slow moving bassline with Serj whispering "look at eachother..." so I'm not sure what the song was supposed to convey, but it initially comes of as a song about rape, and while I think it's partially true it's about rape of the senses from the media. It's a perfectly unsettling song, and amazingly well put together. So if you're in the mood for politically charged, aggressive, near-jazzy rock music check this out.
