Reluctant Adventures In Music I Don't Like...
Decided to make a new journal. Feeling inspired and rest assured, there will be regular posts in both of my journals from here on out...
Forum member Exo_ has inspired me, after more or less putting me in a timeout corner, to venture out, to seek out music I know I have never been fond of as a way to possibly open my heart up to it. Ever since I took notice to music, I have had a specific taste in what music I like/lover, whatever way you could spin it. There have been very few pop artists, country artists, rap artists, so on and so forth, that I have found anything I could connect with musically, to any of those genres I mentioned. Michael Jackson is an exception, the guy made great music. This thread will serve its purpose in documenting my adventures. I will post up little comments on artists I have checked out, outside of the genres I listen to every day. I hope that this will make me less bitter toward a lot of the artists I despise now, such as Taylor Swift or Niki Minaj...however her name is spelled. I think that my music knowledge could very well be a bit stunted with how closed minded I am to other genres of music I have openly expressed are garbage these days. I want to change my opinion on those genres. I'll be checking out: Pop Country Rap R&B (don't actually hate it, just find myself bored of it...) Emo Punk (so, this genre in no way sucks, I just never found myself connecting with it...) Folk EDM World Music And some others. I will take suggestions happily. I am eager to start this adventure! Here we go! |
Dibs on folk recs!
What are you looking for in that field? |

How do you want this to work then? We suggest you stuff in here or via PM? I'd suggest some albums for whichever genre you want.
|
Loreena McKennitt's The Visit
Simon and Garfunkel's Bookends Bob Dylan's Freewheelin' Bob Dylan Maybe some Dan Fogelberg as well. Those are all pretty good starters. |

And, Goofle I can't suggest albums from really any of those genres. I could only give the names of the artists or bands I'd like to really take a good listen to. Truthfully though, I'd rather people just post suggestions, rather than me ask for specific artists or bands I want to check out. Think that'd work alright? |

I don't think Goof was asking you for albums, I think he was offering to suggest some.
How about Progressive Rock? You into that at all? Classical? AOR? Ambient? |

Yes, I actually do like Progressive Rock, I listen to a few bands in the genre but would love to be exposed to more bands, not so much the popular ones, but also the more obscure bands in the genre. I haven't dabbled much in the Classical genre, actually I'm not too familiar with it outside of what I've heard family listen to when I was little. AOR I know a little of, but still not too familiar with it but would like to dabble it that as well. Ambient? Yeah, I think I have listened to some bands that fall under that, just not too familiar with a lot of it though so feel free to suggest something from each genre you mentioned. |
Here are some good classical recommendations:
http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG...er=allrovi.com Arnold Schoenberg - Orchestral Pieces http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG...er=allrovi.com Gyorgy Ligeti - Chamber Music |
With your taste for nu metal I figure I'll suggest some trashy rap for idiots like you and me.
Twiztid - Mostasteless Insane Clown Posse - The Great Malenko Rehab - Graffiti the World (If you're redneck white trash then this is the crappy rap for you.) Tech N9ne - Absolute Power (He may be a better rapper than ICP or Twiztid, but he appeals to the same people.) Actual Good Rap for Angry White Boys... Necro - The Pre-Fix for Death Ill Bill - The Hour of Reprisal RA tha Rugged Man - Die, Rugged Man, Die Jedi Mind Tricks - Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell |

I'll check your recommendations out after work, haha I still need to check out the ones you PM'ed me too. |
Don't worry folks! Listening to these suggestions, just taking it all in and gather my thoughts. I should have something up for review soon.

I've got some Country recs for ya.
Dwight Yoakam - This Time Br5-49 I'm not even a fan of country, but these caught my attention. |
As for prog rock, assuming you haven't already heard these:

I thought I was in the Awful Album Artwork Gallery thread for a moment then.
And i'm slightly bored of posting the same Hip Hop (ish) recs to everyone so I'll hit you with a few I don't see around much. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...1_%26_Over.jpg Tha Alkaholiks - 21 & Over http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41SWKK96B5L.jpg Das EFX - Dead Serious https://www.anticon.com/sites/defaul...bum_72_600.jpg 13 & God - 13 & God http://assets.boomkat.com/images/126538/333.jpg Infinite Livez vs. Stade - Morgan Freeman's Psychedelic Semen http://rymimg.com/lk/f/l/60bc2770a23...0a/3711953.jpg B L A C K I E - True Spirit and Not Giving a Fuck |
Twelfth Night is great. I second TH's recommendation.

So!
Here is a summary of what I thought about what has been recommended to me thus far... Overall, I liked everything that was recommended. The rap was a little hard for me to get a taste for, but I started having fun with it so that gave me a way to connect with it. The classical I thought was awesome! Relaxing and perfect for when I am reading, I certainly want more recommendations for that. Bob Dylan was awesome, love how he writes his music. The progressive stuff you recommended Trollheart, I liked it all, but I have always liked prog, I just need to explore more of it outside of what I know. So, good job everyone. Mostly all of this stuff were hits for me. So please recommended more! |
Here are some more hip hop recs.
Billy Woods - History Will Absolve Me Madvillain - Madvillainy El-P - Cancer 4 Cure Aesop Rock - Float JJ DOOM - Keys to the Kuffs Themselves - The Free Houdini |
Any particular hip hop that appealed to you?
