Let Me Judge Your Music

Ornette Coleman - Blues Connotation

Okay of to quick start on this one. Very cool theme from the sax and trumpet, and as quickly as it starts the sax gets a solo. Obviously a lot of technical ability here, the drummer is a damn clock, and the bassist is doing some very note-worthy runs up and down the neck. The sax just keeps going alternating between more slow melodic sections and extremely quick rhythmic excursions. Oh **** the trumpet is up, very speedy and quite melodic. Drums are giving a nice little little solo although i don't think he's hitting the hi-hat which bothers me for some reason. Back to the little theme, and it ends. To be honest I really enjoyed that a lot, the playing was great, the theme was kind of light-hearted and fun, the rhythm section was tight, and altogether just a really cool jazz chart, so I'll definitely have to listen to more from Mr. Coleman because between this and the other minuscule amount of work I've heard from the guy it's right up my alley in jazz.
Thanks for the pick Frown!

Morning Birds

Morning birds
Tell me more
Sing my head to rest

Morning birds
Sing me songs
To calm me

Morning birds
Take me far
Throw me farther across the land

Morning birds
Take your worms
Fly away without a trace

Morning birds
Bite my tounge
Let my feeling melt away

Morning birds
Leave me be
Take me to this grave

Morning birds
Please come back
No offence was meant to take

Morning birds
Steer my smile
In a direction opposite of smile

Morning birds
Kill me now
Before the day is done

Morning birds
Peck my innards
Leave me disembodied

Morning birds
Let me warn them
Before they take into your disguise

Morning birds
Tell me more
Sing my head to rest

Morning birds
Take my love
And send it back

Morning birds
Take my love
And send it to me

Morning birds
Let me love
Let me love once again

Morning birds
Let me love
Let me mourn over you

Morning birds
Good night to you
You have torn my heart in two

Morning birds
Nighttime for you
Now that I've taken a shotgun to my feelings

Music I've Been Listening To

Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly had me completely stunned the moment I started listening from the space funk grooves of the FlyLo produced opener Wesley's theory to the James Brown funkiness of King Kunta and "i", to even the beatnik poet free jazz thing going on in For Free. Kendrick's lyrics also bring out a certain anger and beauty in that anger following a narrative that is both rooted in himself, and at the same time distancing himself from his current position in society, more or less telling the viewpoint of a younger Kendrick angry at everything around him, but with the mind to say something important like the Kendrick we know. All in all, To Pimp Your Butterfly I'm my opinion comes as the finest crafted hip-hop album of this year and possibly of any album I've heard from this year narrowly beating out I, Love You Honeybear by Father John Misty for my AOTY as of this far in the year.

Just saw this and I'd like to point out that I'm a dumbass for trying to recommend you an album called Blues Connotation when it's actually called This Is Our Music. Now you know where to hear more in that style, I suppose.

change of seasons

All is something a bit more
You are to me, flowing through my heart
The smell of seasons changing is closer
Silence once again becomes valuable

Yearning for something so worthless
This change of season again changes me
Feeling a bit more distant with myself
Not caring

Caring for nothing more than I should
Caring for me less than I care to admit
This is over before I get to make my mark
Change of seasons once again makes me love

My Final Verdict Of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly

Wesley's Theory 5* From the "Every Nigga Is A Star" to the production and lyrics this track is the perfect opener. I wasn't huge in the wonky FlyLo produc to on the first time I heard it, but it's really grown on me and the George Clinton feature is used great, not to mention Kendrick has some great verses.

For Free? 5* I remember hearing this for the first time and instantly knowing I was going to be in for a treat. The production is straight up jazz basically no hip-hop influence whatsoever, and his beatnik flow is absolutely crazy especially near the end. "This dick ain't freeeeeee"

King Kunta 5* Another perfect track and the perfect end of what I call the trifecta of "pimped rap star" songs that is Wesley's Theory, For Free?, and King Kunta. The James Brown funk and the melodic and sparse flow Kendrick puts on is absolutely awesome.

Institutionalized 4.5* I don't know why but something about the forst few seconds of the track turn me off a little bit, but I love the rest of it. Snoop's "hook" is great and the freakish flow Kendrick has on some of this fit the story really well. Love the beat changeups as well.

These Walls 5* This was the first track where I really noticed how the poem fit into each song that was coming up. When the "if these walls could talk" section moves into the rest of the beat it flows so fluidly, it's one of my favorite moments on the record.

u 4.5* This is probably one if the most oddball tracks on the album and the second half is one of my favorite spots on the album. The beat must change 3 or 4 times and really jeeps the track moving and feeling fresh, extremely expiremental production wise calling from free jazz and left-field soul and r&b. His flow is also extremely off-kilter as well from the frantic high and low singing of the "loving you is complicated" line to the drunken Kendrick we see later on in the track.

Alright 4* Really catchy poppy track which is nice after the emotional outbursts of the last three tracks just something you can really groove to. He goes absolutely insane in some sections flow wise with his speed and delivery, all around just a good pop song and certainly adds a little bit if light to the album.

For Sale? 4.5* Let me be honest this was one of my least favorite tracks on first listen. I didn't like the flow and the breathing at the beggining but it certainly grew on me the production is some of the best in the album the dreamy creamy jazz chords that just swirl endlessly I really feel like I'm in a blissed out state while listening to this track, plus it really compliments the the dark lyrics.

Momma 3* Still probably my least favorite track on the album, I don't think it's all that bad just not really doing all that much for me. I dint have much to say about track besides that the production is stellar as usual.

Hood Politics 3.5 * I hate that Momma and Hood Politics are together because they're my least favorites on the album the whole "boo boo" chorus anoys me a little, but overall he has some great verses that save it from being a failure.

How Much A Dollar Cost? 5* Oh boy I love this track, the beat sounds like a mix between Pyramid Song by Radiohead and something out of a James Bond movie and it's awesome. Kendrick has some great verses as per usual on this track and coming after my least two favorite tracks on the album this really picks up the momentum again.

Complexion (A Zulu Love) 5* Perfect track start to finish beautiful production, great hook, and Kendrick goes in and that's really all I can ask for. Also the feature on this track near the end really finishes up the track well and it's nice to hear someone reather than Kendrick for a moment good change of pace.

Blacker The Berry 5* This was the first track I heard from the album that really made me truly excited to hear what the rest of the album would be like. The anger on this track is palpable, and lyrically it's Kendrick's most dense and crazed on the album he sounds legitimately mad like he's losing breath trying to say all that he is just absolutely ranting getting it all out there. It comes with my favorite little lyric refrain on the album too "I'm the biggest hypocrite of 2015" not to mention the jazz outro that sounds like something out of the Earl rulebook just less lo-fi.

You Ain't Gotta Lie (Momma Said) 4* It's weird hearing this track right after The Blacker The Berry because it's so much calmer than the anger that was that track. I love the little hook it's really catchy, but I dint think this song sticks out as the most memorable on the album it dosent stop it from being really enjoyable though.

i 5* First off I'm so glad this new rawer live version of i rather than the polished studio version it just feels more energetic and gets the message across better imo. In fact I don't like the studio version at all its too sterile. The little rant he goes off on at the end really pulls it together for me making it the perfect penultimate track because the story is finally all coming together in a thematic close.

Mortal Man 5* Well the song is just a great closer and I don't really think I need to go into great detail. The part that is really important and moving to me is the Tupac interview. Yes the seven or eight minute interview that everyone on here seems to shrug off as filler, I think it is the most nessesary element of this record, firmly tying together everything and explaining in full the message of the album title itself. It's a perfect closer to a near perfect record.

Overall 4.8*/5*

Albums I've Really Been Digging As Of Late And Short Porrly Written Summeries On My Feelings On Said Album Yes This Is A Segment And This Is The Full Name

The Powers That B by Death Grips

Weird, dense, and sprawling are a few words that can describe this album and it does nothing but impress in its pure range and scope.

Scar Sighted by Leviathan

Brutal and epic Scar Sighted is a great mix of black metal and death metal with epic song structures through the filter of the a deatg metal lens. Great album if your in the mood for some kickass metal with a lot more to it than you might think.

We Cool? by Jeff Rosenstock

A great Weezer-esque power pop album, very personal and sad on the inside decorated with smiles and good times on the outside. Highly recommend.

And now for a song...

My Soul Is The Water

Bubbling
To the top, it's not alright, I've lost my breath
For a moment, sharp recoil, I'll sink down
Listen to voices, call my name, from the top
So sad, trapped under ice, don't have a will...

(Nice try)

Drowning
Bottom of a sea, fish loom down
Going through the head, wandering, lose breath
And my final moments, memories, to rest
My arrangements have been made by me and Death...

You're bringing me down
Suffocate me
Bringing me down
Breath is wasted
Crying alone
Sea washes me away...

Sand
Where I lay, months later, decaying, what a mess
Truly sorry for the cleanup and distress
Bury me at sea, water takes my light
Family crying, wonder, what happened last
Was it poison, or was it concious thought
Peering at the waves, seafoam, my name calls out
A large gathering, ready to join their son
Become a graveyard, your water has turned sour

Distortion is my autotune I just hide behind it.

Hey Look A Picture

I occasionally take pictures and then proceed to use effects until it looks passable because I'm a crap photographer. This is one of those pictures...

TYLER, THE CREATOR - CHERRY BOMB

Well first off I haven't done nearly enough reviews on here yet so I'm sorry about that I'll try and update this journal a bit more often anyways onto the review.

So if you have known me on here at all you should know by now I'm a fairly big Tyler fan, and I've liked most of his work besides a good chunk of Goblin and the OF projects. My favorite project by him coming in 2013 with WOLF it's blending of jazzy/neo-soulish instrumentals with a suprisingly conceptual story made it an album that I have revisited many a time. Although it did have its pitfalls (i.e a little monotonous) it was overall an outstanding album that I think showed people that Tyler had actual potential to be taken seriously as a musician and as a producer not just an edgy rapper. Suffice to say I was extremely excited to see where he would move with his next album.
Moving ahead about two years here we are arriving with Tyler's new album entitled Cherry Bomb. For the most part it's a large departure from his previous work for the most part, and instead of making WOLF part 2 like most people expected (including me) we got something almost entirely different. First off the whole storyline between Tyler, Sam, Wolf, TC etc. is completely abandoned instead being about "finding your wings" a theme shown on nearly every track on the album (also to note this album makes the last three almost meta as the story on this one is Tyler and a girl going to the movie theater to watch a triple feature which are his last three albums). The sometimes awkward sometimes homicidal teenager we knew and for most people probably hated is gone. No more edgy 666 kill them all ignorant stuff that's out, and while Tyler can't can't be seen as really "mature" yet he does show growth.
This album switches between two VERY different styles almost seamlessly fusing very soulful tracks with suprisingly expiremental tracks giving it more diversity that WOLF was desperately in need of by the 45 minute mark. The contrast is throughout this album almost moving from track to track, you have a track like The Brownstains Of Darkeese Latifah Parts 6-12 (remix) a track that uses a barrage of synths and percussion that feels like something is breaking, next to ****ing Young/Perfect which might be the most beautiful sounding track Tyler has ever made. And this keepkeeps happening throughout the album a hard hitting noisy expiremental track something completely new for Tyler that we haven't heard before woth these extremely jazzy soulful tracks some of which being Tyler's best songs.
Alas for the things right with this album it does have its shortcomings. First off Tyler's lyrics have never been the greatest rapper and he's noted this and this dosent nessesarilly change for the better on this album, while I do think he stepped his game up on lyrics there still nothing amazing and he does have cringe moments (Blow You Load). Secondly while i do appriciate the contrast on the album there are two moments on the album where it just does not work well those being Run and Keep Da O's, and while the former is at least short enough to get out of the way before it over stays its welcome, the latter is way to long for its own good. It has grown on me a little, but I still see the track as completely unsessesary besides he wanted Pharrell to rap on a track it just feels lazy until the last minute or so which is absolutely beautiful.
Well despite a few pitfalls overall where I am right now this album is either just as good or maybe a little better than WOLF. Here we see a more confident comfortable Tyler not afraid of showing his influences (N.E.R.D, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, Death Grips) and making them undeniably his own thing. It's far above anything before WOLF and those who only liked Yonkers I would like to suggest this as it proves once and for all that Tyler is worthy of being taken seriously, and while I don't think this is the best he can be yet he is certainly on his way to his classic album.

Favorite tracks: DEATHCAMP, PILOT, OKAGA CA/YELLOW, FIND YOUR WINGS, SMUCKERS, 2SEATER

Least favorite tracks: RUN, KEEP DA O'S

Overall: 8.5/10
