The Anniversary - Designing a Nervous Breakdown
Niche: Alternative Rock, Midwest Emo, Indietronica
Location: Lawrence, Kansas, USA

Been a hot minute since I've updated this, or been active on this site for that matter, and being in an emo-lateral band (excuse me, we're goth) in a scene full of other emo acts really pushed me to the limit with the genre and I now listen to more krautrock, electronic, goth, industrial etc. than emo but still find the genre to be somewhat of a home.

This album being the first midwest album I've heard in a while submerges me right back into that mindset. The college synths on this record just an extra embellishment; reminding me of similar arrangements on Get Up Kids and Reggie and the Full Effect records. It's a pretty good record as well, if not groundbreaking at all it's the same midwest emo I left behind that 3rd semester of college.

what goth music have you ever talked about liking

Emo might also feature sad white people, but musically way way different from Goth

Our bassist is really influenced by bauhaus and I spend my days listening to darkwave and neofolk so I’d say we have a fair influence despite still being an emo band.

but your bassist likes David J

We have songs that sound like New Order and Joy Division but I'm saying Goth is a heavy influence of ours also.

It's pretty good harDCore. The tracks don't pop to life as well as they do on Can I Say but they accomplish what they set out to, which is rad metallic hooks and rif***e over pop punk songs. The acoustic song is kind of a trip up but overall it's pretty decent punk to blast out on it's own, 'tis rockin.

Surprised to find there are some emo-tinged tracks here, which makes sense as Jimmy Eat World was one of their biggest influences at the time. Other than that, DeLonge's vocals are at their graitiest here as he hadn't had the time to refine them, but that's okay because the songwriting is decent, reminds me most of their Take Off Your Pants era. Other parts remind me of the no-name pop punk bands that came around Kaboom Art Gallery. Overall pretty good stuff, but nothing close to Neighborhoods or the self-titled.
