Yeah so as you guys all know I'm a pussy who loves him some emo. I've seen Brand New live and a few local Indie groups so obviously I'm the prime source for this ****. Since I don't want to be as restrictive as my post-hardcore journal, I'll review anything related to Emo or even like Pop Punk or something or other. Rec me ****, I'll listen to it.

https://pp.vk.me/c628631/v628631308/...YcxhvG440U.jpg The Newfound Interest in Connecticut - Tell Me About the Long Dark Path Home (2005) Niche: Midwest Emo/Post-Rock/Math Rock Location: Toronto, Ontario Canada I first listened to this around two weeks ago when I was at one of my most emotional states in a while. After months of dating who I thought was the perfect girl for me, meticulously working on myself and trying my damndest to be the best I possibly could for her, she says we need to take a break. This came at probably the worst time, seeing as I had planned to love her like I used to during the break. We finally had a chance to make it like this summer again, hanging out constantly and enjoying each other's company, as opposed to seeing her for a few hours every other weekend she came home from college. These dreams died and I was given pretty much the silent treatment bar a few odd texts during the day. I was crushed. I felt I was doing something wrong by wanting to spend time with her. I realize now that I knew it was coming anyways, and there are things I know that go into it that were just set off by me stressing her out more by making her find time for me amidst her busy schedule. I think we'll get back together at some point but honestly I'm just so confused about my future with her right now. Hm? Oh **** the review. Right sorry about that. So there I was, crushed and alone. She's my only real friend in this world and I'd do anything for her, but at this moment and time she wouldn't talk to me. I needed something to listen to, to take up these feelings and express them in some other way or whatever. I found this cover looking through RYM, and I stared at it for a good few minutes. It's just... haunting. ****ing look at it, my god. I think that might be one of my favorite covers ever. The music's not lacking either. I went into it with fingers crossed, hoping it'd have the desolate cold feel the cover did. And it certainly delivered. This album is crushing emotionally, it's life affirming. It's emo as ****. Listen to it. It's what I needed at that point and maybe it will be for you. 9/10 Spoiler for Choice Track:

Revisiting something I felt I looked over previously. A lot of my fellow beardpunks adore this record, so I feel like I've missed something here.
http://s.mxmcdn.net/images-storage/a...02_500_500.jpg Direct Hit! - Brainless God (2013) Niche: Pop Punk, Punk Rock, Melodic Hardcore Location: Madison, Wisconsin, United States Fun. What can be said about fun and the having of it? Can fun be described? Can fun be shown or displayed by art? Maybe so, but certainly it can be relayed sonically. From the start to the very end, this record is just a blast. I recall memories of being in sweaty crowds watching small bands with the members spread out among the audience moshing along with us, underage drinking in people's houses, running down the streets of downtown acting like a retard. The sort of self and society deprecating, yet life-affirming lyrics and sound of pop punk are what draws me so much to the genre. It's painfully direct when it needs to be about subjects, yet reeks of immaturity and endless party. More than anything, this record just begs me to get up and do something. It urges me to get the **** out of my dingy bedroom and out doing things. It wants to be a leading hand out to life, it wants me to enjoy every moment I'm given and love life. But there's a certain appeal and aesthetic to doing nothing too I spose. Wish my best friend actually wanted to hang out with me. 7/10 Spoiler for Choice Track:

Bad Astronaut - Houston, We Have a Drinking Problem (2002) Niche: Pop Punk, Emo-Pop, Indie Rock Location: Santa Barbara, California, United States Oh man, this **** brings me back. Being 10 years old in the suburbs, riding around on bikes and being ignorant about everything. Just pure nostalgia to the world around me I knew it as then. Back then, just everything was interesting. Small details in architecture and scenery still trigger off memories of my childhood. It's amazing how differently we see the world as kids, I wish I could live in that era forever, just laying in the grass and staring up at the clouds, not caring about anyone or anything around me. Sonically, this is straight early 2000's suburban American Emo-Pop, with more leanings on indie rock and power pop. Most songs feature piano, and the vocals are laid down by Joey Cape from Lagwagon. It's a pretty decent record, and if you wanna feel nostalgia for days watching Pixar movies in your underwear and playing basketball in your driveway, I think it's safe to say look no further than this album. I know plenty others do the job, and better (*cough* Your Favorite Weapon *cough*), but hey, any ounce of your younger years brought back should be relished. 7/10 Spoiler for Choice Track:

Saves the Day - Through Being Cool Niche: Emo-Pop, Pop Punk, Power Pop Location: Princeton, New Jersey, United States Standard Emo-Pop fare. It's like a less focused Promise Ring, though it shines at moments. Just gimme my Allisters and my Jimmy Eat Worlds. This is kinda weak. 7/10 Spoiler for Choice Track:

Cool. Check out Every Song by The Hated, it's early emo with some obvious jangle pop/college rock influences.
I'll be following this for recs. |
Gotcha Briks.
http://www.qpratools.com/gallery/000...ails-front.jpg Jimmy Eat World - Static Prevails (1996) Niche: Emo, Pop Punk, Alternative Rock, Post-Hardcore Location: Mesa, Arizona, United States I've had high expectations for this album over the years, from the awesome cover and promise of a more crunchier, post-hardcore focused Jimmy Eat World. All elements I enjoy of their sound on later songs like Crush, Bleed American, and Futures. What I got delivered somewhat, but was far from the Jimmy Eat World I knew. Adkins voice is deeper, the guitars and instrumentals don't carry the typical JEW sound, and it all goes into the band coming off less focused than I've ever heard them. However, the strength of some of the songs certainly makes up for it. The twinkly yet hard when it needs to be sound of the band is traded off for more standard Get Up Kids-esque material that's certainly becoming of the times it was released in. It's definitely a good release aside from what I was expecting. 8/10 Spoiler for Choice Track:

I've been wondering, what's the album cover supposed to depict? ^

http://cdn.albumoftheyear.org/album/...am-is-over.jpg Pup - The Dream is Over (2016) Niche: Pop Punk, Post-Hardcore, Indie Rock, Punk Rock Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jeff Rosenstock meets Dillinger Four meets Wavves meets FIDLAR. (it's rad) It bites when it needs to and provides the feels as well. Music for hanging out and underage drinking (and smoking) with fellow beardpunks. 9/10 |

Pinegrove - Elsewhere (2017) Niche: Midwest Emo, Indie Folk, Alt-Country Location: Montclair, New Jersey **** you qwertyy I'm doing this. So Pinegrove are pretty much the best group ever. I discovered them early 2016 when they played two tracks from Cardinal pretty often, Aphasia and Cadmium, though every time they played the tracks I would forget to look it up, and it went quite a while until I heard them from the time I was in high school gaining my first bouts of freedom, starting college through the dual enrollment thing. The tracks resonated with me like few songs have. I fell in love with the group, but with no timestamps to go on I was left in the dust. To me they bring back feelings of that transitional coming of age period that I'm still currently going through, symbolizing my hope for the future and my euphoria for the past. Eventually, I did find the group's name, though I don't really recall how, a few months back and fell in love all over again. The melancholic, dirty southern countryside sound of alt-country (one of my new loves) paired with twinkly introspective midwest emo? Count me the **** in. This release furthers that sound as a live album, sounding even closer to that vivid picture of Americana; eating briskets in Austin watching the band play at dusk with strings of lanterns overhead in an outdoor diner. **** I love the south at it's best. The beauty here is unbeatable. 9/10 |
im gonna listen to it but im gonna hate it

Cloud Nothings - Life Without Sound (2017) Niche: Pop Punk, Emo, Indie Rock, Post-Hardcore Location: Cleveland, Ohio, United States One of my favorite groups back for their 5th proper effort after a decent EP split with Wavves in 2015. It's been a long time coming, but I've felt like the final track on Here and Nowhere else would be a great send off and I would've been fine had they kept their discography as is. This album seems unnecessary for their continuum, and doesn't really bring any new ideas to the table. What it does show though, is some prime ****ing Clarity-era Jimmy Eat World worship, that plays off exactly how you'd expect Cloud Nothings to. The tracks are jangly and full of life, and it could be played as some background lifestyle music. Luckily, that's kinda just my cup of tea. 8/10 |
hell yeah brother. seems as if we're the only two who like it but **** everyone else.
