Late 80’s vibe. Think Sonic Youth’s debut remixed for On-U Sound and/or World Domination Enterprises. This sound was great then and it’s great now. Hits the ****ing spot.

You batting triple zeros with the ladies moving quick though because the triple sixes be up on ya. No luck with the f uck until the Ultraman lunchbox became oh yeah that was me no it wasn’t you goddamn phony. Or was it? God it felt good, short lived though it was. Grades never suffered. Hair down so long past your ass puffy with pride until she became a rape victim cliche and shaved for battle. Love. All. The. Time. What do you call a naked black man at a funeral? His name, motherf ucker. Be sure to tell her Satan.

NUMBER TEN

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...thing_Hurt.jpg

And Nothing Hurt is the eighth studio album by Spiritualized.

Sometimes a comeback album is like I think even the critics want the nostalgia to ring true so bad there’s a loud echo of love there but there’s something missing like Jarboe. I’ve loved Spiritualized since Spaceman3. Jason Pierce’s voice is still tender and fragile now with just a touch of rasp. One time and it’s hard to swallow this but over three decades ago I was out west sitting in a river with a waterproof Walkman listening to this song

and my boyfriend came up to me and he was so tall and strong and we made out while the water rushed to cover us and that song played and Jason Pierce that’s what he means to me. Those moments, usually drug induced, when it doesn’t matter anymore that it’s not ok. You’re just twirling around completely absorbed by the now.

Number Nine

Iridescence
Studio album by Brockhampton

There is indeed a chain from Wu Tang to Odd Future to Brockhampton. It’s the disintegration of barriers. Surprise attacks. Love. Fierce even violent and even hateful love. This is music that gives me hope. We’re queer. We’re different. We’re the same. Stupid and smart. Brilliant like Licensed to Ill. Ready to party. It’s ****ing life bitches. Genital warts and all. I love this because what this album says to me is that the wildness and righteousness of youth will not be defeated. Hope springs eternal.

Too bad you couldn't have competed against all the good journals back when this section was actually active but nice job anyway.

Number Eight

Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides
Studio album by Sophie

At first I told Ant that this wouldn’t make my top ten but would make my top twenty-five if I were making one. Now I wonder if this shouldn’t be number one. A brilliant pop record is probably the most elusive pot of gold at the end of the longest rainbow over the roughest seas. Simultaneously avant garde dance floor popping booze selling and mdma infused. It’s got to be the future as it should be and really will be and is now as we soldier on unaware of Derrida‘s metaphysics of presence. And yes that’s really what’s on the table here.

Stadium
Album by Eli Keszler

https://shelterpress.bandcamp.com/album/stadium

Keszler isn’t just a virtuoso regarding the way he maneuvers the mechanics of his instruments but a virtuoso at handling the physics of sound. Revolutionary of the 21st Century he’s left the 4 minute / 3 minute miles behind and left us googling wtf was a mile. There aren’t many who can escape Schoenberg’s finality of tonality limitations dead end but there’s a Lazarus of Bethany (Bathory?) Award for some. Perhaps time will tell us.

God's Body

There’s this thing some of you might know about with Sketches of Spain where the trumpet is used as a transcendental spiritual device. This goes further with the transmigration. One note can change, maybe even destroy, your life (or lives).

Personally, I feel a big Ganelin influence kind of mating with a creepier fusion era Miles.

5/5 serious contender for top ten AOTY

highest recommendations

Released yesterday. I am so excited about this! Number 1 AOTY contender 5/5 unassailable all that.

I’ve had the good fortune of seeing YoshimiO twice. Once in Tokyo with OOIOO and once in Florida with only about 15 people in attendance playing an improv with Kawabata Makoto. Both experiences were amazing but the latter is one of the most precious memories of my life.

Susie Ibarra, a huge fan of Sun Ra, has an astonishing resume and is one of the greatest percussionists of all time.

Don't @ me if you disagree. Oh, and if an artist released more than one thing that I consider to be a part of a series (see: Thou, Iglooghost) I just stuck them together.

These are all good, if not great albums, though for different reasons. If the genres they're tagged as pique your interest, even if they're not in my top 20, you should still listen.

Those who take interest in how the musicians of Evan Parker: September Winds dealt with the challenges and unique opportunities of recording in an empty water reservoir will likely find themselves intrigued with the challenging acoustics of Lisbon’s Church of Santa Engrácia where this brilliant and beautiful work was recorded. Also like September Winds, All the Rivers is contemporary classical third stream free jazz. Dig on it when you get the chance.

I just ****ing love this more and more with every listen.
