Glenn Kotche: Drumkit Quartets by So Percussion

Glenn Kotche = Wilco’s drummer
So Percussion = a popular, perhaps trendy, percussion quartet

Album Review:

It’s good. The compositions are clever and interesting and surprise the listener with interesting techniques. Kotche is a surprisingly good composer. It’s hard to pull off fun in the contemporary classical world but at times his effects are cool - fun to listen to. This is worth a listen.

Channel the Spirits
Album by The Comet Is Coming

This album tries to be the new Lifeforms by The Future Sound of London and there’s three tracks that reach for that kind of glory. Unfortunately there’s nine songs that are just corny.

That’s cool. Are you gonna try another?

I've heard some of them already, but yeah, in between the projects, I'll take the plunge :)

Album by Wacław Zimpel

The high points on this album are quite high. Not as top tier as Glass, Reich, or Stetson but good music in that direction. The low points, unfortunately, make the composer seem amateurish. I still recommend checking it out if you’re interested in the post-modern or minimalist scene.

Blonde
Studio album by Frank Ocean

XOXOX

This album is one of the reasons I’ve chosen to spend an entire year reflecting on a year that almost just happened. So much is going on so fast that it’s tempting to fly by the roses in your pretend White Ferrari at 100 mph because well **** the AC works and it’s fun and comfortable but we gotta hit the rest stop... smell the ****ers. This album was a huge commercial and critical success and it ****ing deserves all it got. It also inspired Tyler to make Flower Boy. And this is still better.

This guy is testament to the power of Spotify’s curated playlists. Nearly 800,000 followers and tracks with millions of listens. That’s all with almost no presence at all outside of Spotify. I wonder if he even plays live.

This music is meticulously non-offensive. I have to say, I do admire how well he pulls it off. 13 minutes of well-crafted instrumental tracks. Just a c unt hair better your typical respectable attempt. I wonder how much he’s been paid. On some playlists, like sleep deeply types, the artists will only have the one or two tracks on the playlist available. I suppose Spotify commissions those artists for the single tracks and arranges a one time payout. Not sure though.

4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole

This top seller was nominated for some famous awards but received luke warm reviews. Eyez is a critically under appreciation hip hop record. By being understated, soulful, and thoughtful Cole created an excellent genre stretching listen that bleeds classic era soul. This works very well as a companion piece to The Miseducation of Lauren Hill.

The Colour in Anything by James Blake

Pop music has soared. The layers of texture and the ironing out of the avant garde make this record a pop masterpiece. The Colour in Anything reshapes the surreal and inaccessible into something architecturally sound and spacious. Like Rama-sized spaciousness. Dreamy and rainy and rainy and rainy still. What were we dreaming about? One of the best pop records of 2016. Beautiful beautiful British soul.
