Mexrrissey ‎– No Manchester

Hear No Manchester https://soundcloud.com/mexrrissey/sets/no-manchester-1, a playlist on #SoundCloud.

It seems like I discovered this on Music Banter but the search engine didn’t hit. Very sincere and touching Morrissey/Smiths covers. The melodies really shine. There’s an upbeat and endearing sound here that reminds me of the unabashed joy found in the smiling world of J-Pop. One member, Sergio Mendoza, is also in Calexico (I thought Calexico won the Mercury Prize but wiki isn’t backing me up. Anyone know what’s up with that?)

*The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get ::: Good song

This album makes me feel like I’m watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which is awesome because that’s a great movie.

A Moon Shaped Pool
Studio album by Radiohead

Only the most curmudgeonly music fan could dislike Radiohead. They’re one of the most consistently high quality bands of all time. Pool is their third best offering: behind only Kid A and The King of Limbs. Reminds me of Beck’s Sea Change obscured. Delightfully blurred in a way that Radiohead has cornered. If you think you don’t like this open your heart and try again. It’s beautiful.

They're dull. Bach already made beautiful music, everyone else trying for beauty should focus on something different.

I believe you find them dull and that’s the most damning criticism there is. I think they wield the mystic like a hammer the way Zep and Floyd did.

While I think you’re being facetious about Bach I respect where that’s coming from. He was prolific to the edge of greed leaving nary a beautiful note combination. But I thought announcing who shut the door on a chapter was my bag.

Is mediocrity a damning criticism? Any mysticism that I'd ascribe to the group would be connected to their acclaim.

Rain Temple
Album by 2814

Excellent vaporwave. Cool beats. Enchanting vocals. Hypnotic ambient textures.

Sleeper
Album by Daniel Menche

https://danielmenche.bandcamp.com/album/sleeper

As far as I can tell I have a full monopoly on whatever has been said on here about Daniel Menche. Know this: If you don’t know his music you have a blind spot in your expiremental music knowledge. He’s a ripping force. This album he mellows but if by Sleeper he was thinking of a Richter or Eno type of thing it’s a mid day power nap at 3 hours and you better be boozed and pilled and you’re still going to have night terrors. Really it’s not super creepy but it’s creepy enough. Thanksgiving always was more horrific than Halloween, anyway.

Arbina
Album by Noura Mint Seymali

https://noura-mint-seymali.bandcamp.com/album/arbina

Fun and exciting Mauritanian pop music. It’s not like I have a lot of Mauritanian music to compare it to but it feels more upbeat than releases I’ve heard from neighboring counties, Mali and Senegal. Parts of it are kind of Bollywoodish. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s huge there. Actually, where Mauritania sits geographically fits well with this sound. Somewhere between Mali and Morocco.

Reflections Under the Sky
Album by SiJ and Textere Oris

Dark ambient with various trimming lots of cool sounds birds, water, vocals, non- intrusive tribal drumming. From Ukraine and Russia. Music that hopes for peace but prays for war.

Turns
Album by Silke Eberhardt and Uwe Oberg

This is a third stream contemporary classical avant garde jazz hybrid released on the legendary Leo Records. Half the tracks are original and the others are at least fairly obscure standards. It’s an excellent record but if I have any complaint it’s that the way they tend to introduce the central themes is a bit too direct. The contrast against the solos sounds a little silly. On the other hand, that’s just me. I could also see it as a positive. Like that putting the themes on display is probably, for many, a refreshing reprieve from the typical avant garde obfuscation. Or is obscurantism a fairer word? Recommended despite my doltish review.
