If you never heard the late 80’s king of post-punk - Sonic Youth Butthole Surfers Big Black -but just read about them with your 30 years later brain this might be what you’d imagine. Retro-neo-riding-out-a-bad-trip-psychedelia because minutes move too slowly but decades too quickly.

Recommended for fans of DJ Spooky, Burial, The Caretaker, any kind of Hauntology, and for anyone who has ever held a candle and said acid is groovy.

Beat heavy ambient chill

I like this but predictably at least to myself I’m going to complain about the beat. No beat is needed because the beat is already known. On the other hand, he does a good of blending it in but still it’s distracting. Maybe that’s why I don’t put frames around paintings or photographs. If there’s a beat I want it to be as essential as a log is to a fire.

Disco Punk Opera as sung by a former pop star with actual Opera training who ditched East Berlin to hang out in '77 London, and met Jesus on an acid trip (and, more importantly, The Sex Pistols).

Weird. Catchy. Fun. Hagen goes hard with the vocals, and isn't afraid to scream or straight up belt full force. Her band sound sort of proggy here and dancey there, switching to a heavy and doomy feeling for Naturtrane, and thrashy Punk riffing for Pank (which just means Punk in German, so yeah).

And there's also a short a cappella showtune thing that somehow fits.

It's a great album. If you ever cross paths with it on a dark and rainy night, be sure to immediately stuff it into your pants.
