A Long Look at 2008

because why the **** not

we went into depth on the tremendous year 1927 but what about 2008?

The Congo was still going ape****. You couldn't swing a dead child without hitting a freshly raped corpse.

The good times never stop.

First album up:

The Magnetic Fields - Distortion

Great album. It's supposed to be The Magnetic Fields' Psychocandy. Ain't nothin Psychocandy but Psychocandy.

OK Let's say you're going to die. And there's lots of music out there. This one's a winner. Don't fight it. But then again let's say you figure you only got time for one Magnetic Fields record. This ain't it. The one you absolutely can't live without is 69 Love Songs. Real talk.

Don't worry! The year has just begun. And we know how it turns out. Spoiler Alert: We Survive!!!

I'm not even in the mood to be ghoulish. Was 2008 a slow news year? There was this one thing in Austria. A crime was uncovered. Some depraved **** kept his daughter chained up for regular rapings for decades. She gave birth seven times under those conditions. One story said she became lovers with her bodyguard after her liberation. That last part reminds me of the creepy music at the end of a horror movie. A reminder that time does not heal.

In 2008 there was a school shooting where a hetero boy killed a gay (maybe trans) kid who was aggressively flamboyant about his sexuality. The gay kid constantly harassed a Nazi skinhead type. That is until the Nazi shot the gay kid dead. The teachers wanted to shut the whole situation down but they couldn't put the breaks on the situation without coming across as unsympathetic to the gay kid. Maybe the Nazi kid deserved the teasing. One thing's for sure: a corpse in your classroom is a sure sign of poor classroom management. HBO made a documentary about it.

Alpha Wave Movement's Gregory T. Kyryluk.

Alpha Wave Movement is a new age/ambient music project from Miami.

Spoiler for Picture of Miami:

Quote:

“We are facing an existential threat here,” admits Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, Miami Beach’s city commissioner. Pancake flat and built on porous ground that is slowly sinking back to the seabed, Miami Beach is surrounded by seas rising three times the pace of the global average.

The entire southern section of Florida is at risk from climate change but Miami Beach is eyed with particular concern by other cities. After all, if this wealthy area can’t engineer its way out of trouble, where can?

Miami Beach has spent around $200m raising the height of streets in vulnerable areas and has a network of pumps to force water back off the streets after ‘sunny day’ flooding. Even more radical fixes will be required – if sea level rise isn’t quickly tamed then this vacation hotspot will be virtually swallowed up by the end of this century.
- The Guardian

If you can't stop it. And you can't. Do yourself a a favor and put this 2008 gem on.

Terra by Alpha Wave Movement

Safe on our terra or on our way to Proxima B

Quote:

Impossible journey?

And, lets be clear, the long journey time even to our nearest exoplanet neighbour, Proxima b, means that it is definitely a one-way ticket. Indeed, with current technology, this journey would take tens of thousands of years.

The alternatives that would allow us to travel within a single human lifetime involve mastering near light-speed technology. There are some ambitous plans in progress on this. Another approach would be to develop reliable long-term human hibernation techniques.

During their voyage, the astronauts also have to shield themselves from potentially fatal doses of cosmic rays. They must also avoid muscular and skeletal wasting, and cope with the psychological demands of being locked up for years in a large tin can. At their destination, they will also have to adjust to life as an alien without the advantages of evolutionary adaption that we enjoy on Earth. This is probably the greatest challenge of all.

I think it's the last solid album that Opeth released. I especially like The Lotus Eater.
