Take Suicide. Plenty of electronic artists have become far more sophisticated, but Suicide burned their bridges and went to square one, even if square one could never have reached the subtle heights of their descendants. But they arrived at a far more visceral and excited sound than so many of their followers simply because they didn't know what to do and that was amazing.
Wow. Just when you think nobody is reading. That’s a perfect example of exactly what I’m talking about. Have you heard the live recording where they’re booed off the stage during Frankie Teardrop? Suicide isn’t just a perfect example; it’s the BEST example. ****ing solid gold post.

I'll be honest I'm no longer high enough to hang with this conversation but it made total sense at the time.

It’s ok. I knew you’d go back into the closet.

But I was looking for that video of Frankie Teardrop and couldn't find it so I just settled for another live video. Is that literally the most confrontational song by a "pop music" band to that date? And probably for a few years at least.

It still ranks number one in misanthropic despair.

Honestly I listen to this and think that harsh noise never beat this for sheer disorientation. Even as a complete pleb, after five seconds of Merzbow I know that this is other ****, and after ten seconds I know this is a bunch of noise, even if I don't really appreciate the concept.

But I'm still not entirely sure how I should listen to "Frankie Teardrop". It's so quiet like it's inviting you to read too much into what Suicide are doing. But all Suicide want to do is stop you from thinking you're at a concert. You're just watching insanity. That's escapism. Madness. Anything else is just a bandaid.

Yeah. Suicide is multilayered and can pull the listener in several emotional directions at once. I’m glad you brought it up. This journal was starving for something to talk about.

Re: Merzbow or any other in that wall of noise game...

https://www.musicbanter.com/members-...cking-out.html

You can hear different approaches to noise by checking out a few of the artists there. Some are expressing cathartic release, others are expressions of nihilism, and some are explicitly political. Often their packaging tells me they don’t actually know. Musicians are like that all the time. It’s weird.

If it annoys you turn it louder. If you’re bored read a book.

This is one of my Merzbow favorites

I think you would like it.

When I was younger I used to fast. Usually from food and water for 48 hours.

I got interested in it after reading this book:

Buddha from Korea: The Zen Teachings of T'aego

Taego Bou examines the question of whether dogs can have Buddha nature and concludes the answer is no but instead of explaining why not he assumes his reader (or disciple) isn’t ready for the word “no”. Instead of thinking about dogs he says we need to focus on the word no. He said focus on the word no like with the same intensity as a starving man focuses on food.

einstürzende neubauten negativ nein

One of my favorite songs ever.

I don’t just say yeah I’m too busy saying no.

-Beastie Boys rewrite-

The point of fasting, in this particular discipline, wasn’t to learn how condition yourself to deprivation but instead to train your mind to concentrate obsessively.

After about 40 hours I would be so ****ing thirsty. I would get a big bottle of Gatorade and stare at it for the entire final 8 hours. It’s a meditation cheat. You can try to focus on your breathing all you want. That **** is almost impossible. But get thirsty as **** and you can focus on water mother****er.

It’s a similar practice actually... it’s sort of a combination of pretending you are the sound vibrations and that the sound is all that exists. Monomaniacal focus on it except it’s not like Ahab and the whale. It’s relaxed.

Good choice. His work with Balazs Pandi, especially An Untroublesome Defencelessness, is my favourite vein of his work.
