His stuff with Kath Bloom is pretty nice too, but it's very far removed from the rest of his discography.

Haino is one of those artists that I really haven't heard much from so I'll be checking this out.

Those Shocking Shaking Days

Indonesian psych rock/funk comp that is well curated and flows well. There's so many comps like this out there which is a wonderful problem to have but some kind of get boring. Not this one. Great stuff on this.

Gil Evans
The Individualism of Gil Evans

Lots of great players on this album that has mood. It's like a long drag from a cigarette in a dark bar this one. Paul Chambers, Richard Davis, Dolphy, Steve Lacy, Ron Carter, Elvin Jones, Wayne Shorter, and with Miles Davis writing sh*t. Record is fantastic.

That’s an absolutely stunning ensemble of talent!

Ry Cooder & Vishwa Mohan Bhatt
A Meeting by the River

We just got in a bunchof high quality audiophile albums and this was mixed in with the bunch. Holy sh*t. I haven't been this floored by an album in a while. This thing knocked me on my f*cking ass. We also just got in a pair of very very nice speakers so the combo just killed it for me. This is a masterpiece.

Plankton 09-18-2019 11:40 AM

Ry is one fantastic musician. Gonna have to give that one a spin.

Bruce Palmer
The Cycle is Complete

Bassist of Buffalo Springfield made one album and it's a drug filled jam fest that actually doesn't feel contrived and derivative. Its actually one hell of a record. Who knew?

Neil Young
Tonight's the Night

The older I get, the more I get guys like Neil Young, Ry Cooder, and Van Morrison. Stop me if I get to Warren Zevon and Graham Parker please. Bummer of a record and it's f*cking rad for it.

That depends. If you take a strict definition of riot grrrl records, I think it would be:
5. Sleater-Kinney - eponymous
4. Bratmobile - pottymouth
3.Bikini Kill - cd version of the first two records
2. Frumpies - frumpie one piece
1. Sleater-Kinney - call the doctor
Honourable mention: excuse 17's such friend are dangerous, which is not very good but still kicks ass
But if you include any record from riot grrrl affiliated bands the whole top 5 would be Sleater-Kinney, :
1.the woods
2.dig me out
3. The hot rock
4.call the doctor
5. One beat
Or maybe the frumpies would come in at 5. I'm not sure

Labyriths

Might be the best psychedelic banjo record your ass has ever heard. This hits your right in the nutsack. It's incredible.

Nope. Completely forgot. I'll try to listen to it today or tomorrow. I have a house call an hour away tomorrow to look at a jazz collection so I'll want to be in the mood.

Cal Tjader's Latin Concert

Super freakin mellow and vibey record with a sweet ass supporting cast in Guaraldi, Bobo, Santamaria, and McKibbon.

Pharoah Sanders
Black Unity

This just came into the shop and it made me change my avatar which is not an easy thing to get me to do. It's divine.

OccultHawk 12-11-2019 07:54 PM

The percussion is positively thrilling. And even though it’s completely Coltranian I think you can hear slight echoes of Bitches Brew’s thematic cohesion.

F*ck yeah dude. Welcome back by the way. I waited to do more Albini stuff until you returned because you got so mad at me last time.

OccultHawk 12-12-2019 11:52 AM

Who starts a blog on Steve Albini by dissing Big Black?

Only goddamn small ding dong fool that’s who

This is a nice companion record to Black Unity

http://cps-static.rovicorp.com/3/JPG...er=allrovi.com

Black Beings by Frank Lowe

https://franklowe.bandcamp.com/album/black-beings

Also very Coltranian but a bit more violent and aggressive. It’s also, as the bandcamp page points out, the recording debut of William Parker.

I just said it wasn't for me. I hate drum machines and don't listen to industrial like ever.

Both wrong opinions.

It’s supposed to sound soulless

I know what the f*ck it's supposed to sound like. I just don't like it. F*ck.

Edit: To be fair, it's not like I don't like those albums. I just don't hold them in high a regard as the rest of his work. I have them both rated 3.5 on RYM.

Max Roach and His Chorus and Orchestra
It's Time

Another absolute masterpiece I have discovered for myself far too late in my life. Absolute wonder of a recording and something I might find entering the upper echelon of records in my life with repeated listens.

Church.

You know, Matana Roberts is carrying that same tradition at absolutely unassailable heights.

Great record on India Navigation that just rolled through the shop. It becomes harder and harder not to keep everything that comes in.
