A log of what I'm playing in the record shop I help run. I'm pretty much always spinning a record. Our building is a old train station made of stone so the radio signal sucks and our CDs are terrible. The bluetooth sucks too so we stay old fashioned and spin records.

From now on, this is where I'll be posting shop records. It'll be a nice window in what I do for a living or at least what I'm listening to on a daily basis.

Piglet
Lavaland

A few months ago I had the opportunity to buy two records from a rare limited record seller. The second record will be covered in my next post. The first is Lavaland by Piglet.

I was able to get a good deal on both records if I purchased them together but this still cost me $70. Why did I spend that kind of money on a record that only has five songs? Well, good question. This is the only real "release" that Piglet ever had. They had a CD of other songs a few years back but the EP they released in 2005 is the only real official label release. This coupled with the fact that they aren't on Spotify means that this record is kind of one of the few ways to hear this album without downloading it or streaming on YT. I like that exclusivity. The EP also kicks major f*cking ass.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OllEOofj4O8

Some might say they have that generic Mathrock sound but I've listened to a lot of Mathrock in my day and their sound is kind of unique. I'm not even a big fan of Mathrock. I listen to a lot because I'm trying to find another band that sounds like Piglet. The breakdown that starts at around 2:30 in the video above is one of my favorite segments in any song. It reminds me of driving around in high school when I was discovering a very large amount of new music. I'd burn a CD of something that interested me and then drive around for hours listening to music, usually smoking weed as I was doing so, with my friends. We played this CD a lot.

The band members couldn't have been much older than me at the time they made this in 2004-05. That connection was also a big reason I fell in love with the album. The music spoke to me and was written by like minded same aged kids that looked a lot like my friends and I. I hear it now and get very nostalgic.

Lots of reasons to spend $70 on a record. It's limited too so as a collector I get that "ONLY 899 OF THESE EXIST BESIDES MINE HAHA I'M SPECIAL" feeling.

Check out the EP if you like. The full album is below.

Kayo Dot
Hubardo

So this is the second rare record that I got along with the Piglet record. Limited to only 200 copies, this blue variant is one of my most prized records. I'm a huge Kayo Dot fan. I see them every chance I get, have had conversations with them about album concepts, and have had many a drunken and high experiences with their albums. Toby Driver is a genius in my eyes and his work with Maudlin of the Well isn't to be forgotten either. He's been doing this a long time.

Their sound has changed a bit on their last two records to a more gothy post punk with synth overtones and ghostly vocals. This album however is a total tour de force of epic proportions. Starts out with grizzled vocals by former Maudlin pal Jason Byron and then just swirls into this cacophony whirlwind of blast beats and dissonant guitar licks. Very dark and very atmospheric. Brutal way to start an album. Then the horns hit.

The album is split up between three LP's. It's a long album. Lots of movements. Lots of different sounds melting together. The pressing is very good. Great sound quality from the wax. Album comes with a nice lyric sheet.

The majority of the middle of the album is this frantic avant garde jazz chaos with Toby Driver wretching out vocals over horns and blasty off time drums from Keith Abrams. Sets a very sinister mood for the second half of the album to follow.

^One of my favorite songs of all time. Nothing injects energy into me like that song. Pure adrenaline.

After Zlida the album kind of dives underwater for a bit with these dream like melodies. Mia Matsumiya makes an appearance on violin. Toby ups the vocal range a bit. It comes to a close with this...

God damn thing is a masterpiece and I was happy to spend every dollar I did to get it in my possession. I'm still waiting for the re-issue of Choirs of the Eye to get here. When it does, the double feature of playing both epics back to back is something I'll be looking forward to.

In case anybody is interested in seeing what the shop I work at looks like.

Exo 07-09-2018 07:28 PM

I've been too busy to f*cking mod this place correctly lately let alone write a journal entry. I do have enough time though to share a few big purchases I've made recently. The collections I buy are turning into records I actually want. Good thing I have a good job because if my income relied on the money I make from selling records from collections I buy I'd be broke. They're back to supporting my hobby. Anyway, I visited my favorite record store a few times in the last few weeks. Here's the new additions from that store plus stuff I've brought home from the record shop I help run. The guy has prices that are...well...just WAY too good to pass up. Couldn't help myself...

So instead of creating a new journal, I'm just going to change the title of this one and expand from here. Reason I haven't been writing in this ever, besides the fact that I have a problem sticking to anything, is that I've been working at the record shop six days a week plus my own online business.

I had an idea today to post albums I'm playing in the shop. I'm pretty much always spinning a record. Our building is a old train station made of stone so the radio signal sucks and our CDs are terrible. The bluetooth sucks too so we stay old fashioned and spin records.

Parliament
Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome

Got some Parliament records in recently. We've been on a streak where every funk album that comes in has been trashed so this record being in good condition is a nice touch. Playing it LOUD.

Bootsy's Rubber Band
Stretchin' Out in Bootsy's Rubber Band

Might as well continue this funk fest.

MicShazam 09-07-2018 12:25 PM

I often think I would probably love funk, but I forget to actually go and check any out. Gonna listen to these two for sure. The cover artwork alone sells them easily

Sonic Youth
Sister

Switching things up. We generally play a lot of 80's/90's indie rock/alt rock in the store. This is a censored re-issue we have that came out a few months after the release. Not my favorite Sonic Youth record but still nice to play on a gray day.

Listen to everything by Parliament and Funkadelic and go from there.

TBH I think he'd hate the alternate prog of Funkadelic.

Prog is dead inside. Funk is full of life. I think I'll get something out of it - maybe even a lot. I'll find out later this evening. Right now I wanna finish the album that's spinning on my stereo.

The Batlord 09-07-2018 01:25 PM

Some funk isn't black prog but some is. Funkadelic can most definitely be black prog.

MicShazam 09-07-2018 01:48 PM

Listening to this Funkadelic album right now and I'm totally on board with this.

Maybe white people should just hand prog over to black people and let them do it right, then.

Frownland 09-07-2018 02:00 PM

That applies to most genres tbh.

A more rocking and upbeat Tim Buckley. I prefer his more avant garde stuff but this is still a kicker of an album. It's always nice to have some Buckley in the shop.
