Default Anyone know the song/artist?

Heard a song in my car last week that really grabbed me, but I missed hearing the song title and artist. Sung by a woman with a great voice, somewhat edgy sound style, the tune ends with what sounds like a fuzzed electric slide guitar solo which was spectacular. The one lyric I remember went something like "and he smiled when he counts the dead" or it could have been "daddy smiled when he counts the dead." I know that's a bit alarming. I guess that's why I remembered it. I'm hoping I misunderstood completely that lyric, but in any event, I'd love to know what song that was and the artisit if anyone has a clue.

It was like Sarah McLachlan singing a blues song, except it wasn't blues, rather, more of a folk-rock type sound. The slide guitar solo lended towards blues though.
