Typical pop-indie album. I didn't enjoy this as much at all, and it was a huge let-down.
Starting out with something as wild and inventive as Sad Sappy Sucker, then making indie as famous as it is now with Good News For People Who Love Bad News, and this ruined it all for me.

We Were Dead Before the blah blah blah was a decent album for me. I expected more. But got less.

are you serious?

i hate this album. i have every other album they've made, and i've seen them 5 times now. i'm a huge fan. but this album isn't even music. it has no substance. they have so much better material. try Interstate 8 or Fruit That Ate Itself. anything but Sad Sappy Sucker!

anyway back on topic, i'm very surprised to hear so many people whining about We Were Dead. i think it's fantastic. sure it's different than their early stuff, but it's still just as good. it's poppier, more cheerful, and easier on the ears, but that does not reduce its quality.

i think too many people are just intolerant when it comes to artists changing their sound. they call them sell-outs for making different music today than they did a decade ago. well no, Moon and Antarctica is about a decade old now, and i usually see that as a turning point for them into more palatable music. but really, you can't expect a group that's been playing for 13 years to keep producing the same album over and over. what fun is that?

i think Good News is even more mainstream. i felt with We Were Dead, they brought back some of their old sound again. it was a relief to hear after Float On got soooo much airplay when it came out. blech! good enough track, but why pick a single that seduces the wrong crowd? i heard so many people who went out and bought the album because they heard Float On but then hated the music since that track stands alone. hmm...

I think the album is pretty solid actually. It's no Lonesome Crowded West or Moon and Antarctica, but it's pretty well done with quite a few memorable tracks.

It all depends on whether you've heard modest mouse before, or if this album was the 1st time you listened to them, if you've heard them before and like it, it may be harder to get used to this new sound of theirs, if this is the 1st time like it was for me, you'll probably really like it, and you may find it hard to get used to the older stuff, me, I have no problems with either sound, they're both very good, and Modest Mouse is, was, and will be, a great band.

I personally quite enjoyed it, although it does lose it's way a bit towards the end.

Interesting

So far only heard Dashboard which is a good song, but quite different from the Modest Mouse I grew up listening to on Skate Videos. Also wonder if it was their idea to have horns like baroque pop or if that was a producer thing.

Overall the production and composition were great, though I could see how this could be off putting for a big Modest Mouse fan. Though you can't blame an artist for wanting to branch out, otherwise you end up releasing the same album for twenty years. At that point you would be making art to make money rather than making art to just make ART!

Also I write and sing indie music for anyone who likes alternative music.
