I felt it was average, like Good News for people Who Love Bad News before it this albums shows Modest Mouse "grown up" but unlike bands who grow up and start experimenting they just got old and started playing laid back radio "indie" rock. Dashboad is a great pop song don't get me wrong, the album isn't that bad. It's just disappointing, I wished they'd utilized Marr much more too. Like I said, it's not bad but compared fiery Pixies and Built to Spill inspired indie-rock they were putting out before this album is just dull and I'd much rather listen to The Lonesome Crowded West or the Moon & Antarctica. I miss the days when Isaac Brock screamed about trailer parks, teen angst and religion.

dashboard is the most amazing song in this album. i love it so much. but i didnt find this album as excellent as there others.

Lizzie 01-18-2008 10:18 PM

it was pretty dull, typical indie rock i guess, i expected a lot better, now i dont really like the band as much

under 01-18-2008 11:32 PM

hopefully if they let out another album Brock will let out a little more and be more loose in his music. He was a bit of a disappointment in this album.

Piss Me Off 01-27-2008 02:38 AM

I have a lot of love for this album, how the hell Florida wasn't released as a single and stayed at number 1 for 10 weeks i will never know! Its an album crammed full of pop songs and while it isn't The Moon and Antartica its one of my faves of 2007.

pheurton 01-27-2008 04:39 AM

I didn't deserve all of the hostilities it was sullied with.
Old MM fans get too pissy, and it shows how ***gish they are (I'm looking at you rar)

jackhammer 02-09-2008 12:47 PM

I have'nt heard any other MM albums, so I cannot compare it. However it is a good solid album of indie rock with some good guitar work. It has'nt set my world on fire, but it is extremely listenable and works well at the juice bar except for Parting Of The Sensory-too explicit!

swim 02-21-2008 05:30 PM

Listen to This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About!

Skid Mark 02-21-2008 05:33 PM

Oh phew, this was the first album I got of theirs and it really got me wondering why you guys like them so much

sleepy jack 02-21-2008 05:48 PM

Yeah it's really hard to be a fan of Modest Mouse's older stuff and not so much their newer stuff especially when you tell someone about them being one of your favorite bands. They're like "Oh the Dashboard band?" and its like argh "No fuck you the Float On band." Not that Good News is any better.

Rainard Jalen 02-21-2008 11:24 PM

The only MM album I've ever had is this one, actually, so maybe somebody can help me out here: are the vocals that crazy on the older albums too?

enemyat_thesix 03-25-2008 06:56 PM

best song is "invisible", one of modest mouse's best ever

mamanuthead 05-22-2008 02:56 PM

I have not heard any of their other albums so I have nothing to compare it to. I checked this one out from the library because my friend is a big fan and is trying to get me into them. I think it's ok but not great. Apparantly I picked the wrong album to start listening to MM.

Rainard Jalen 05-22-2008 04:27 PM

yeah, it sure is very "ok". if anybody claims this was a fantastic album, they ought to go to a music psychologist.

sleepy jack 05-22-2008 04:42 PM

I'm actually shocked by the amount of people who think this is such a great album. It's a subpar album by a great band and that's why I don't like it.

Its probably my fave MM albums out of the few i've heard :D

TheBig3 05-23-2008 03:38 PM

I love it because cunt-faced MM fans loathe it.

I saw them a number of years back play with the Flamming Lips and Cake and I had never heard them. When I asked someone who came for MM what they sounded like, the reply was "there the reason I live and breathe"

I hope she and her miserable ilk tied the belt around their neck when this came out.

You like an album just because people don't like it? How very soulful of you.

Well thats an atrocious call back.

What it really comes down to is that there are expectations based upon factors that in no way dictate or serve as a precursor to those expectations. Theres no Modest Mouse formula per say. Simply because we put some people in a room whose sum equates to Modest Mouse does not mean the same math will yield The Moon and Antarctica.

But people still believe it should. And they believe failure to do so is simply incorrect.

And so to rebel against those who stand on the mountaintop and profess an illogicality and then to take it even further and condemn others for not blindly following their faulty logic, well it just borders on the zealousness of religion.

In short, if you didn't like this album you oppose same sex marriage and abortion rights and you should stop eating meat on fridays and onyl have sex when you're married.

Its all laid out right there.

hahahah and if you were serious: HAHAHAHHAHAHA

Piss Me Off 05-29-2008 02:34 PM

Well that was a horrible argument, but We Were Dead is still better.

adidasss 06-02-2008 06:44 AM

I like Dashboard, Missed the boat (with the dude from The Shins!) and We've got everything. Which is kinda expected since I'm a shallow pop-whore. So yeah, I'm not a big fan of this band and I think it's time I deleted almost 500 megs of their discography I have clogging up my hard drive...:|

Amazing.. I know a lot of people who did not think it was that great but that is because they are stuck in their old sound. Modest Mouse's style has changed a bit from early albums but I welcome the change.

Check_The_OR 07-14-2008 12:23 AM

I think we were dead is a great album, spitting venom is one of my favourite songs by any artist right now, and marched into the sea, dashboard and people as places as people are also very good songs

jimmd23 07-15-2008 08:36 AM

I def liked this album alot, but still compared to their earlier albums like This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About, The Lonesome, Crowded West, and the Moon and Antartica it wasn't quite in the ball park.

burninup4jb 07-15-2008 08:09 PM

good news for people who love bad news i think was a much better album but we were dead before the ship even sank is decent.

sweetleaf 09-16-2008 06:48 AM

I have to admit I act like a snobby rotten disgusting indie Queen by not wanting to listen to this because I was "so" into Modest Mouse 8 years ago... I understand how annoying that is because I've been to the shows and had someone yelling in my ear all night for them to play "Trailer Trash"... My husband never liked them but he likes this and I put up a big fight not to ever listen to it. Every time I hear it I do realize they have evolved into something still very good it might be more polished but, it's damn good too. There I admit it. (only to the forum though)

Tyler Durden 11-10-2008 02:23 PM

I'm not a big fan of this album but I enjoy Little Motel alot!

JockinJelupa91 11-11-2008 08:01 PM

Everyone who ever said this album was bad please listen to "Spitting Venom" one of the best songs of the album. Please listen then comment

lvsimo77 11-12-2008 09:04 PM

I don't think the album is bad at all. I just don't LOVE it. But there are plenty of good songs and I still play it once in a while.

Everybody talks about how amazing The Moon & Antarctica is and I keep saying to myself I really need to listen to it...hopefully I'll get around to it some day.

FaSho 11-18-2008 04:36 PM

Poor.
It was a huge step back form their previous work. They used to have meaning, now most of the songs are just garbage.

CalRog 11-21-2008 05:30 PM

i vote fire it up as the best track on the album.... missed the boat close second.

Agreed. Definitely a step back from their earlier stuff..

FaSho 11-25-2008 06:52 AM

My favorite album by them is the one almost no one's heard of:

DearJenny 11-25-2008 09:29 AM

I liked it more then their earlier stuff but less than Good News For People Who Love Bad News.

What's so appealing about Sad Sappy Sucker? Unusual lyrics beyond the point of comprehension at times, horrible sound, and not really any meaning to their songs which completely changed from then to now. Don't get me wrong, I love SSS but to say it's better than Lonesome Crowded West is just silly to me.

Were Were Dead... was one of those albums I woke up right when Best Buy opened for and excitedly raced inside to grab a deluxe version. I hurried back to my car and blasted it. March Into The Sea is still my favorite album, it sets a MM-ey tone of lonliness and anger. And the album for the most part continues with that there along with water. This seemed like much for of a Modest Mouse-like theme than Good News to me. And I enjoyed it as a follow-up from The Moon and Antartica more so than Good News. Going straight through the album, every song has something to offer I think and I have gone through an obsession with each, most recently "Little Motel" and originally "Steam Engenius"

This album is excellent and was a personal classic to me since it was released.

ViolentNoiseParade 11-25-2008 01:42 PM

First off - Lonesome Crowded West I would argue is the best Modest Mouse album, that whole album is an excellent listen all the way through.

Second of all, this album is definitely not the best Modest Mouse album but not the worst, I would have to say the best song on the album however is Parting of the Sensory which leads me to wonder if the person a couple posts back actually listened to the album when they said that Modest Mouse's newer lyrics have no meaning... Meanings are pretty easy to pick out in most of the songs on this album.

It's definitely a cleaner sound than the earlier Modest Mouse albums but I would also argue not quite as clean as Good News which I would say is a good thing, it seems more characteristic of the band.

All in all - Good album.
