I like it. It reminds me a bit of the Talking Heads 77, a group of college kids get hip to a calypso beat, maybe even early Police. I'm not a pop aficionado, but when I play a pop record I'm looking for something light, bouncy and effervescent and immediately catchy. Very good.

interesting comparison with 77. i think the real difference is that 77 showed a band that would go on to make a lot of really brilliant music and Vampire Weekend's S/T really only showed a band that wasted all of its good ideas on the debut album.

I wouldn't say they wasted all their good ideas. for example Cousins is a good song. It just doesn't sound like any of the other songs on Contra. I think they bit off more than they could chew with the new one, should have stuck to the s/t's formula

Can't listen to Vampire Weekend too much without starting to cringe.

I prefer their old one to their new one, but I am still a fan generally. As most people, I can only listen to their songs every so often (save for A Punk just because its so summer fun)
